Before Re2, definitely didn't put my knight intentionally in this position. After Re2, only alternative I saw was putting my knight back to c3 which would either lead to Rc2 again or a better move.
Keeping the extra pawn seems realistic also with .. Rd8 2. Rd6+, as there is time for letting my king breath.
