I think I'd double with the 0=5=6=2, because though we've shown an offensive 5=6, we could bid that way without the aces.

I doubled. Partner had 4-2-2-5 with the Queen of Spades, Ace of Clubs and a couple spots. Red suits split so 4 went -2 for 300 but we can make 5 of either red suit.

That's on partner. Given his shape and the rest of the auction, your spade void is pretty clear, and his lack of spade strength suggests that opps are bidding primarily on spades. He knows you combine for at least eight diamonds, and the club ace will usually often losers in that suit to zero (when there are pitches available) and always to one, so imo at this vulnerability he should pull to 5D.

I think you can double here. It doesn't have to work.

welp, stuff happens

really, I don't think it's terrible to take this kind of result -- the red suits really don't have to split like that and then you're trading a plus for a minus.

Worth remembering, always. You are trying to maximize the expected value of your score (approximately), not to find guaranteed results. At matchpoints, you double if on the information you have, this will be better than the alternatives 51% of the time. At IMPs, it's a slightly different calculation but the same general idea.

Every bridge player needs to get used to absorbing wrong results, because they happen.

Btw, at IMPs I probably pass. What partner should do when it rolls to him, I don't know. Bid, probably, in this case to avoid the risk of a double game swing.

BTW, I'd have given serious consideration to bidding 4H instead of 3H, because that's how I roll. That, too, does not have to work -- but when I then double 4S, things will be that much clearer.

At IMPS, red, I think 4H would have been correct. At matchpoints I don't think it is, but you do have a point that it's worth thinking about.

Well, I mean, the thing is, we're approximately never passing 3S if that comes back to us, and we're really going to have a nagging feeling we're missing 4H if partner passes our double (which is the only sensible call at that point).

I'd love to get a game going tonight.

Sure. But 3S may not come back. Partner is allowed to have QT8xx xx x Q8xxx, which I haven't worked out but I think means 3H is about right.

Further, he's allowed to have KJ9xx T9 J9 KT8xx, where 3NT is the right contract. In fact, leaving 3NT open is probably the best reason to keep things low(ish), at any form of scoring.

I may play — depends on when 'pup calls to be picked up from his friend's. (I am soooo tempted to let him drive on his own, even though he's not sixteen yet.)

Everyone should fill out a fantasy Spingold bracket on bridgewinners. It's free and you get $500 and a challenge match versus a BW team where POG could strut its stuff.

Plus it doesn't look as if fmk is playing so we're not at a disadvantage by being obliged to pick him to do well anymore.

We should also probably diversify to maximize changes of POG vs good people happening.

Seems fairly standard to defend 4S doubled here.

Assuming my life doesn't blow up, I'll likely drop in on BBO tonight, if anyone's around.

I try to be around Monday nights if I can be, knowing there is likely to be a POG game.

I also have a regular date with a good non-POG partner Wednesdays at 8 mountain / 10 eastern and we are often hunting for solid (or at least not insane) opps.
