Understand. But that's common enough that i would assume it with anyone I sat down across from. I do think the downside to assuming this is relatively limited if we're not on the same page.

This is largely regional. In USA obv I’d assume Walsh, in France that would be a totally lol assumption, etc.

So did a 2 day pairs event at the regional this weekend where you have to qualify for day 2.

49.34%
51.55%

enough to qualify for day 2

47.34%
48.08%

Total masterpoints awarded:0

On one hand I really don't care about masterpoints. On the other hand it does seem lame to qualify for a second day and not get anything. I mean is 1 gold point to much to ask for qualifying day 2?

Am I crazy?

Wait until you do that in a 3-day national pairs... haha

Like you said though man it's not about the points. You are just trying to play good bridge and hit the overalls. Congrats on making d2 -- you should feel good about that at least. You had 3/4 sessions under 50. Next time make that 1 or 2 of 4, and feel good that you improved even if you dont get any points. I mean you would clearly feel worse if you played in a 0-500 game and crushed it right? Let good bridge be its own reward. Find a double squeeze, even if the opps' cards don't cooperate. Count down every hand and know that you didn't phone it in, even once.

I will say, though, that it is slightly incongruent with Swiss teams, which gives match awards. But I don't know how to fix this or if it matters. But like if Chuck is at all bent out of shape about it, imagine most of the people who ARE there for the points...

I had it in the back of my mind that anyone that made day 2 of a national pairs event auto got some points. But yes looking at the latest Silidor pairs finals, there were a few holes where people didn't get any points, which does make me feel better for some stupid reason.

My two biggest things at the moment for trying to improve is not phoning it in ever, which is hard, and learning the right times for aggression. I've toned down my aggression through the years, but starting to learn places where I need to pick it back up. Especially in this sort of game.

Partner didn't have his best game either, but is getting significantly better. I don't think our hotel being right next to a night club helped.

My partner was at the last 2 Ill regionals, you might know him Wetz

Call wrong card. Make 10 tricks instead of 12. Lose match by 1 IMP

Are there any resources you guys could recommend to start playing? I grew up around the game, my mother and my sister play. My sister was an international player but has since passed away so I no longer have the opportunity to learn from her. I've been trying to get my mother out of the house more since so I've been thinking of putting real time into bridge. Unfortunately my mother doesn't want to play online and for the next little while going to the local club isn't ideal for both of us, so I'm kind of going at it alone.

If you had to start from scratch (relatively speaking, I have played poorly a few times at rookie games or to fill in while caddying at tournaments), where would you start? Books? Videos? Making strangers suffer as my partner on BBO? I would appreciate any direction!

Well made it to the round of 64 in Spingold. You better believe I am picking my team to win it all in the fantasy Spingold bracket...

You know it's a bad half when you lose IMPs on 5Dx=

Disclaimer: I do not know very much about bridge. However, I do think there is value to be had from playing against the BBO robots--specifically in practicing declarer play. You can play as many hands as you like, and you can take as long as you'd like to plan out a line of play.

Agree - it is good for thinking about layouts, and really any amt of volume is good for you.

Not good for partnership defense (at least, the hand won't match what you think it should a lot of the time - admittedly, gib being a liar doesn't change the fact that there may be interesting problems), plus gib has a lot of bidding quirks. And you are rewarded for doing funny things in the bidding to lead gib astray.

But it's probably the best tool out there for the $. I play a decent amt with Jack, also, although he is fairly opinionated.

Choc and I pretty much always have an ongoing bbo challenge. Definitely while not getting live reps it has helped me stay fresh and practice declarer play. As stated obv the bots bidding is lol and defense is pretty bad too.

Anybody who wants to challenge me, fire away @ gnsbbo.
