ready player one

seems obvious in retrospect, even i've seen the trailer for it around

popular book turned into a movie

if there is a downside i guess it's target audience could be a bit too specific

Spielberg sci fi, cant really go wrong but yea it may be too niche to cap

Remember that teams don’t get twice as long to pick; this is early round so of course need to consult but it shouldn’t be an ongoing pattern during the draft

We always are optimistic about how many movies will cap

5 capped in 2017
11 were 200+
28 were 100+

Picking two “easy 200-250M” movies at picks 11/12 or 10/13 isn’t as easy as d1 makes it sound

Those numbers include It capping and Get Out with 175M, hardly easy choices, as well

Whatever

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ok, started actually looking at 2018 movies and, wow, this year is packed with potential

I’m even looking forward to my round 4 pick, there is so much depth

I'd definitely take the under on Stuck's predictions for both Fantastic Beasts and Ready Player One.

agreed. I dont care who was added to the cast, Fantastic Beasts was an incredibly disappointing movie. I expect the sequel to underperform

We announced our pick within 2.5 hours of Stuck's selection. Less than half of our allotted time, so you can't be talking about us. (6:30 am - 9 am my time)

Yea, the most excruciating thing about these drafts is evaluating in hindsight what you missed out on/shouldn't have selected etc. But I guess that's the whole point of the competition. There are always sleepers and flops.

This happened last year with It and TDT. I struggled with the idea of actually taking IT in round 3, and once I had taken TDT, I didn't want to take another SK movie. In hindsight, this was foolish.

im expert at finding flops... valerian and city of a thousand planets, great wall of china

I think we’ve all found our share of flops

I took Jupiter Ascending and Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter and Cowboys and Aliens

i drafted jupiter ascending before you did! iirc i took it like second round or something, but it was delayed til next year, so i had to repick. then you picked it the following year

It's a shame that filmmakers cannot seem to translate classic (sometimes pulp, admittedly) science fiction and fantasy. Sometimes it is hard to do, sometimes they don't take it seriously, and sometimes they take it too seriously. I would do some nasty things to see a proper presentation of The Foundation Trilogy, any Stainless Steel Rat, Ill Met in Lankhmar, or Tower of the Elephant for example.

I never said it's always easy (should be pretty doable this year though, imo). But it doesn't really matter anyway, as you don't win this draft in 2 rounds.

The real fun starts in r3+, because until then everyone is pretty much just going through the motions. Although, there are always a couple of whoppers thrown up early to keep things interesting!

Pan in r2 a couple of years back was my big disaster pick.

Yeah Mary Poppins 2 was my other thought. Higher ceiling, but also lower floor. Which probably makes it better here but we will see.
