In 9th place, scoring 4 points

solid category fit

maybe too solid
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
DonkDonkDonkDonk, with Too Long by Daft Punk

man, I love Discovery, but this song is, as the title says, just too long, and just not intrinsically interesting enough to carry it off

Around The World or Robot Rock would have been better category fits and have the decency to not last ten minutes

first minute of this I enjoyed, but I found myself hitting skip way before the half way point almost every time I tried ot listen

In 8th place, scoring 5 points

perfectly serviceable, but did nothing for me
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Girlfriendarene, with Repitition by Purity Ring

yeah, one of those that I don't have a tonne interesting to say about, it wasn't bad in any way, but it just didn't click with me and I had no real interest in hearing it again, even after a few listens

In 7th place, scoring 6 points

the third song I'd heard before

it was better than I remembered
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
bwslim69, with Battle of Who Could Care Less by Ben Folds Five

Ben Folds is someone I kinda like but don't love, and I've got the album this is on but it's never really jumped out as me as a particularly good song

listening to it in isolation, it's above average, definitely more than just an album track, which I'd dismissed it as before

but it's falling down for me in the way that a lot of Ben Folds songs do, just feels a bit too clinical and detached, not enough feeling in it for me

In 6th place, scoring 7 points

we're now onto 'this is interesting, I see what it's doing, it's good but not entirely for me'
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
mexineil, with Over the Moon by Colours

yeah this kept my attention enough, interesting track with some really good bits

but had the usual issue with me and math-rock stuff, I struggle to find it much more than 'interesting', I can't imagine ever really loving this

In 5th place, scoring 8 points

category fit perfect

definitely too perfect
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Gad Prime, with 10:15 Saturday Night by The Cure

but in all srsness, yeah, great category fit but a similar problem to the last two

I really can't imagine in what scenario I would ever go 'oh yeah, this is really what I want to listen to right now'

great tension throughout though

the last song I already knew

did you submit something I might know? be scared
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
xander biscuits, with Over and Over by Hot Chip

another classic from my student days!

this is good song

not as good as Boy From School, but that doesn't fit the category anywhere near as well

but a solid repetitive indie dance anthem

Is this the category you thought you submitted the artists best song? My first instinct was another artist that I think would have done better. And it is the best song by this particular artist

not quite; this is the category that i thought i had the absolute best category fit with 10:15 Saturday Night

and knowing your love of The Cure, I thought there was a nonzero chance that you'd submitted the same one

what was your first instinct?

In 3rd place, scoring 10 points

this was not what I expected and mostly good
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Dizzyqtp, with Boredom by Tyler, the Creator

yeah so I'm vaguely aware of Tyler without ever having really listened to his stuff, but this wasn't what I was expecting him to sound like

anyway, I liked it, but I feel it did get stuck in an odd middle ground between 'chill' and 'interesting' which stopped me fully loving it, I think fully embracing the chilled-outness would have given a better vibe throughout and made it trancier, or letting it go properly offbeat and odd would have allowed it to be way more interesting, but it ended up somewhere in the middle and wasn't trancey enough to fully chill to but also not consistently interesting enough to really listen to actively

idk if that makes sense but hey, I liked it overall

In 2nd place, scoring 11 points

yeah, this category was a little weak ultimately, this is a good track but slightly surprised it ended up on the podium

maybe it's a hangover from how ****ing awesome the podium in the last category was
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
JMurder3, with Furniture by Amy Studt

this is pretty good though

nice mix of vocals that lend a suitably creepy vibe to the whole thing, like the building production to the chorus, maybe found the metaphor a bit overextended but, eh, I'll allow it

maybe could have developed a bit more as well, the vibe is great but it really doesn't change much, was hoping it'd kick up a gear in the last third but it never really did

In 1st place, scoring 12 points

and then the winner got there just by being really ****ing fun
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Gad Beta, with No Lover by Jetty Bones

this is a good bouncy pop-rock song up until the second verse, which just kicks the energy up another notch and basically sealed the win, it's just a proper 'oh damn' moment which a lot of the other songs were missing

anyway, maybe a little lightweight but can't hate it for that, this is channelling Perfect Day for me but a bit older and spikier and after having its heart broken a few times

good song

and yay, glad you liked that, Bloo: it's the kind of song that gets in my head and stays there, and I love the copious internal rhymes and repetitions
