an actual song! and I even kinda liked it!

bwslim69 with Might by Modest Mouse

it's modest mouse! It sounds like a modest mouse song! I like it as much as I like most other modest mouse songs which is enough to enjoy it but never quite enough to be a proper modest mouse fan. Trended down badly over time, category is pretty stacked and a modest mouse song that is pretty ok didn't end up doing enough for me. modest mouse.

the song I most feel I might decide I underrated if you gave me another year to deliberate

Girlfriendarene with I'm In Love With A Girl by Big Star

So this is a complete song! And really should be in my wheelhouse, but I'm just not loving it, I like the 'I didn't know' line and delivery, but the rest of it is…fine? Gelled with it a bit more over time, it's a nice vibe but still doesn't do enough to be more than a nice little distraction. Feels like a nice album space-filler but nothing you'd really seek out to play.

got this highly based entirely on five seconds of the song that make me go 'oh hell yes' every time

Eric with Stay by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs

ok so obviously this is a classic, and I kinda feel like I'm robbing some of the songs below it that are more complex, or subtle, or arch or refined, but **** it when he jumps up the octave I remember exactly why I rated this one so highly. also, it's genuinely a proper song with a proper song's structure, all in under 100 seconds, solid work

on the other hand, this song has the worst five seconds of any other song on this list and nearly nodiumed thanks to it

Spoiler:
DonkDonkDonkDonk with Izzat Love? by Todd Rundgren

so smooth, goddamn, this is really quite nice but kinda loses its way in the last 30 seconds or so, up until then I was really jiving with it, it's got that proper 70's easy listening vibe but in a really nice way, but it just kinda peters out into a bit of repetition at the end with a random chord change thrown in. also **** the ending **** it gets my ears every ****ing time, this was nodium to start with just because of how much ear pain it caused me

#1 on first listen, but trended down over time, still pretty nice

JMurder3 with Crawled Out Of The Sea by Laura Marling

yeah I still really like this, but it just really hit as soon as I listened to it then didn't get much better with future listens whereas other songs revealed more as things went on. Lovely build though. Adore the trumpet at the end. Nice submission.

did the reverse of #5 and trended significantly up over time

Gadarene with Sequel by St Vincent

this was bottom half for quite a while, kinda left me a little cold - it felt very constructed and inorganic with all the lush orchestration. But then over time I really started to love the languid vocal delivery and sleepy vibe the whole thing has, even if I still kinda think I'd have liked it more as a dirty mess. Doesn't sound like a short song at all, partly because it just...kinda peters out at the end? Where is my climax?

I knew this song already, but had not properly appreciated it before

xander biscuits with The Letter by The Box Tops

oh hey obv again this is a classic but this version of it ****ing slaps, some real gravel in his voice, the horns that I don't remember noticing before, and also HOW IN GOD'S NAME IS THIS UNDER TWO MINUTES LONG srsly it goes chorus/bridge/chorus/bridge/chorus and still has 30 seconds to spare for an outro what the hell is this wizardry, came out of this with way more respect for this song than I expected to, this is insanely tight songwriting and a great delivery

straight-up banger

Gad Beta with She Does by Locksley

ok yeah nice this slaps it's a full proper rock song that comes in, hits every possible beat, gets it done, then ****s off, feel like this would have been an indie disco classic back in the day, hard to say too much about it because it's just a solid rock track, no complications, just makes me want to dance

mexineil with Gareth Brown Says by mclusky

ok this has the greatest opening line of any song ever, and that 'YOU GOT A PROPHET'S NAAAAAAAAAAME' chorus, and just all over this is doing everything the Pixies ever did but even better, so ****ing harsh and threatening but still packed with ludicrously funny lyrics. again, a ludicrous amount packed into this song, two verses, two choruses and an outro, great work. 'ALL OF YOUR TALES ARE LIES, YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO ALTON TOWERS' also up there for great song lyrics
