Birdman's Random Deep Cuts Music Reveal Birdman's Random Deep Cuts Music Reveal

02-24-2021 , 12:55 PM
I am going to use this thread to reveal what, to me, are random songs that I playfully call "deep cuts" which is an expression that just means they may not be that well known. Sometimes this will mean they are actually not well known at all, sometimes it might be a less well known song from a popular artist, and sometimes it might just mean its a song/genre/artist I would never normally listen to so it is just a deep cut for Birdman specifically. The songs may be super well known to other people but to me I thought they were random enough to me, personally, that I felt like including them. Also sometimes they are just good and I want to share them with people. The goal here is just to share some good music with the community--hopefully at least one person hears a song they haven't before and ends up really liking it

There is no particular order to any of these reveals. I will try to reveal ~1 a day until I run out and include a little write-up of where I first heard it and/or what I like about it. Please feel free to discuss or to completely ignore me and let me shout into the void.

I will kick things off with...

Spoiler:

Helplessly Hoping by Crosby, Stills, and Nash

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyquqw6GeXk

I actually first heard this song used in the 2018 movie "Annihilation" with Natalie Portman. It is honestly used very well in the movie. I think Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and Young) have always had great vocals. But in this song they are almost mesmerizing. It really features the vocals in a great way with a subtle guitar riff in the background.

It is short and sweet, but manages to really evoke the emotion described by the title, in my opinion. What do you think?

Heard this song on Sunday, when driving in my car. Hadn't heard it in a long time but it is one of my favorite CSN songs.

yeah for some reason i don't listen to CSN that much but whenever I do I like their songs. Feels like maybe I need to make them a more regular part of the rotation.

A classic. Not a deep cut for me, but that's probably because I'm old and a CSN fan.

haha yeah I imagine for lots of people this isn't a deep cut. It is mainly a "Birdman" deep cut.

As I was saying before, the more I listen to CSN the more I like them. They are actually my mother's favorite band. I separately also like Neil Young so in theory CSNY should be right up my alley.

I definitely ended up liking a lot of the music my mom would play on car rides as a kid. Not sure I felt the same way at the time.

Here is the next song...

Spoiler:

Love and Mathematics - Broken Social Scene

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2fsKgxr-Zo

Broken Social Scene is a fantastic band from Canada. They have put out quite a few albums, but "Feel Good Lost", which "Love and Mathematics" is from, is my favorite. The entire album is amazing but since this is a song reveal I had to pick one song. Really hard to describe what about this song is so good--frankly it is just super chill. I first heard this song when I was in college. My friend was trying to test out the some program on the PS2 that was like a sound visualizer. You played music and it would do weird designs and stuff on the TV. He put on "Feel Good Lost" and turned off the lights and we listened to the entire album straight through. It was totally mesmerizing. Definitely an awakening into a new genre of music for me.

You may find after a few other reveals that I like this kind of music. If you enjoy it I would highly suggest listening to all of "Feel Good Lost" from beginning to end, which you can do here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNf_LIapy6Q

I'm a fan of Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People, but never listened to any other album. Will check out that one.

For today's song we go to Italy...

Spoiler:

Il Mondo - Jimmy Fontana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFyCfFJC0no

I first heard this song in the movie "About Time" and thought it was amazing. I have read the translation so I am vaguely aware of what Jimmy is saying, but even without that the song is great. Just really good vocals and very emotional even if you cannot understand the words. The song was so good that Fontana translated the song into a Spanish version and managed to take it to the top of the charts in Spain, too.

I actually liked the song so much that my brother in law sang it at my wedding ceremony.

For the next song we take a great song from a well known band that is not one of their most famous:

Spoiler:

Doom and Gloom - The Rolling Stones

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPFGWVKXxm0

Probably not the "deepest" cut. And for anyone who is a Stones fan, or just a classic rock fan in general, you've probably heard this song. For me, I grew up loving the Stones but mainly for some of their better known hits like Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Beast of Burden, Paint it Black, Satisfaction, Angie, etc. I actually did not hear this song until I was in my late 20s. I felt it should make this list for being a great song by a great artist that is not one of their better known hits. And frankly, it slaps. What do you think??

2. beast of burden
3. doom and gloom
4. paint it black
5. sympathy for the devil

Gimme Shelter is such a good song

The story of the female vocalist Merry Clayton is pretty ridiculous, too (imo she makes the song). Apparently including a female vocalist was a last minute decision and amounted to Clayton being woken up in the middle of the night, pregnant, and coming in and nailing it on the first take.

Reminds me a bit of the title track to Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story (the female vocalist part, not the pregnant/one take bit). It's the best song on Rod's best album, but about halfway through the song, Maggie Bell comes in on harmony vocals (credited as "vocal abrasions"), and from there on, it's no longer Rod's song -- it's hers.

Visiting a new genre for the next song...

Spoiler:

Ride The Fence - The Coup

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz3DjOed39I

I've shared this song once or twice on POG before so you may already know about it from that. Or perhaps you have heard it somewhere else. Anyways it is a great song by a great band. Some of you may have heard of Boots Riley (maker of the movie "Sorry to Bother You)--he is the front man of the group. In any case this song is catchy and has a great music video, but of course I mainly like it for the revolutionary lyrics.
