Work busier than expected. Am taking Bora Bora in French Polynesia...write-up in a bit. Don't feel like getting sniped, or even risking having it happen, while I do it, though.

Never been to Lake Tahoe so please fill me in, but I will use that pick for outdoor activities - waterskiing, jetskis, hiking, ziplining, reenacting the Godfather, etc. Skiing during winter (time period TBD)

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

thanks... i think i got it now. so gad picked central california, and i want to take hearst castle. it's smaller than a city, so i guess i'll just take whatever city sized region around hearst castle, but the castle is what i want

san simeon/hearst castle

san simeon is a pretty little town

but i'll be spending almost all my time in a non stop party at hearst castle

famous for it's debauchery, i'll fill the castle up with models and ballerinas(nod to the 60 year old billionaire former owner who paid the ballet company to give him his teenage ballerina wife) and pop stars and actresses and track and field athletes(the hot ones)

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Seeing as how I literally could go to San Francisco pretty much anytime I want & never do, it seems silly to waste a pick on it while the place that me & my wife would have spent our honeymoon if we were baller rich is available.

Bora Bora, the place so nice they named it twice, is known for its picturesque scenery, stilted huts, mountains & aquatic life, including a "lagoonarium". The nightlife in Vaitape is supposed to be decent as well if I feel like dealing with actual people.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Bora Bora extremely solid pick and great writeup

Hearst Castle looks quite pretty, but that's not why I'm in that area, so no skin off my nose

obviously my picks must be elite if people keep shaving parts off of them to take for themselves!

The write-up was pretty half-hearted, but the pictures kind of speak for themselves.

Just noticed I messed up one of the image tags & too late to edit sooo...

Pick #2: Big Island of Hawai'i

So much stuff to do.

How can you go wrong with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park?:

There's manta ray snorkeling:

I'll be getting in some culture at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park:

And some great nature hikes:

On my way out, I'll get some nice relaxing sunshine on Kua Bay:

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Starting Point: LAS VEGAS 115.1398° W

Pick 1: ALASKA 149.4937° W
Pick 2: TUVALU 177.6493° E

Time to head to a tropical paradise in the middle of nowhere.

Here it is:

Can't see it? Let me zoom in:

What? You still can't see it? Let me go really close up:

There we go. Home for a week.

Why would I want to go here specifically?

Who wouldn't want to go to a tiny island nation? Who wouldn't love to wheel out the anecdote of the time when you were in Tuvalu? I know I would.

Who wouldn't want to see this sort of thing too?

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Since North is already west of my next desired location, would I be able to just go since it's impossible for him to snipe me? Or would that just create confusion & mass hysteria?

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

No-brainer from my perspective...

Starting Point: LAS VEGAS 115.1398° W

Leg 1: VANCOUVER/LOWER MAINLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA 123.1207° W

Leg 2: WELLINGTON, NORTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND 174.7762° E

Leg 3: SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA 151.2093° E

I won't be able to do writeups until tomorrow night, but I wanted to keep this moving until then.

I'm in the same boat as you currently. Don't know what people think of that.

It's about goddamn time my pick didn't get sniped. (Well, semi-sniped because I was torn between Sydney and my pick. TN made it easy)

Also JM3 goes from French Polynesia to Hawaii. I wonder where he got that idea?

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

I got it from my list of places I need to go. Did you do that, too? I knew someone picked Big Island (& I knew you picked Tahiti). It's a pretty ingenious path.

I'm so bad at geography that pre research I would have thought Hawaii came before French Polynesia.

I think it should be allowed as long as people are 100% sure they're not actually skipping someone & it's clear where the order actually is. Would make things go faster & not actually prejudice anyone.

I'll confess that I was unsure of which was further west too before this draft.

I PMed my pick to Bloobird and asked him to post it after he makes his pick.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

eyebooger's pick:

After 2 amazing weeks on tropical paradises, it's time for a change of pace. I'm going to one of the biggest cities in the world.

Pick #3: Tokyo (139.7811)

Culture abounds here, and I'll be absorbing a lot of it.

I have the Imperial Palace:

The Meiji Shrine:

The Sensoji Temple:

....just to name a few.

Add in some views of Mount Fuji:

And a sushi breakfast at the Tsukiji Fish Market:

and I'll be a pretty happy tourist.

Most of all though, I'll be looking forward to getting lost in the sea of people a place like no other.

You had to know that when you went to New Zealand that Tokyo would be gone before you got another pick, right?
