Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Sorry I haven't done any writeups in a while. All my 2+2 time has been dedicated to the Mystery Peehs scoring.
Here's a Vegas sunset from today, though...

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Catching up!
Shiraz is Iran's cultural capital. It is apparently teeming with vibrance and history and is beautiful to boot.
Call me unamerican if you will (I'm not), but there's something about Muslim architecture and design that really hits my sweet spot. It's just so mathematically gorgeous:
They did invent algebra.
The mosque in the following pictures literally becomes a kaieidoscope every morning when the sun rises. Tell me this is not one of the most beautiful things you've ever seen:
The architecture alone is worth the trip (again, in a hypothetical world where it wouldn't bork my future chance at a security clearance and ensure secondary screening from now until 2216).
Also there's street art. I love me some street art:
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, from everything I've heard, the Iranian people are in general, like, ridiculously friendly and hospitable -- which I can believe, because when I was in Eastern Turkey, people were ridiculously friendly and hospitable, and this is right next door with similar cultural importance placed on hospitality.
Plus, if it's anything like Eastern Turkey, you'll be treated like a rock star just by being a tourist. People will come up to you and ask you to pose for a picture with them...on your camera. It's a pretty awesome experience.
And daytrips? We got daytrips!
Pasargad, former Persian capital from 600 BC:
Persepolis, which became the capital after that:
Yazd:
The Varzaneh desert city (with giant pencils for some reason):
Varzaneh salt lake:
And maybe a daytrip to this bazaar where the roof is made of parasols?
Okay, no, that's halfway across the country, but the picture was too cool not to share.
And finally, sunset!
Would be quite an adventure.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
I might not bring much else to this thread, but at least I've popularized the sunset.

Thanks. Sometimes I take for granted how pretty it is out here with the mountains & clouds & occasional sunsets.
It's so different from growing up in [undrafted large New England city].

I think that Shiraz is my new favourite place (or at the very least the best pick that I'd never heard of before this draft)

thanks
whenever i sit down to put together a writeup, i always spend waaaaay too much time on it, which is partly why i'm so far behind (that and the lack of imgur at work now; i swear, i would be fully caught up if i could do that at my desk)
both of your guys' writeups have been elite AND timely, so you've got that leg up on me

I'm putting in filthy level work while all of you are expanding my horizons. Of course I'm still never going to these places, but thank you all anyway.

Went there this summer and was really underwhelmed. I'm sure it's great if you're really into jazz or really into mardi gras and getting totally hammered, but perhaps I'm too old.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Starting Point: LAS VEGAS 115.1398° W
Pick 1: ALASKA 149.4937° W
Pick 2: TUVALU 177.6493° E
Pick 3: VLADIVOSTOK 132.0065° E
Pick 4: FUKUOKA 130.4017° E
Pick 5: CASEY STATION 110.3128° E
Pick 6: ULAANBAATAR 106.9057° E
Pick 7: COLOMBO 79.8612° E
Pick 8: UDHAGAMANDALAM 76.6932° E
Pick 9: ANTANANARIVO 47.5079° E
Pick 10: PETRA 35.4444° E
Pick 11: JERUSALEM 35.2137° E
Pick 12: SAVONLINNA 28.8864° E
Pick 13: OKAVANGO DELTA 22.9059° E
Pick 14: PALERMO 13.3613° E
Pick 15: JOTUNHEIMEN NASJONALPARK 8.4842° E
Pick 16: SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE 6.6131° E
Pick 17: CASABLANCA 7.5898° W
Casablanca, a place so good that they made a movie about it. Bet you can't come up with another place where that's true!! (Well there was a TV show called Colombo, but I digress).
The main man made 'sight' there is the Hassan II Mosque, and what a sight:
There is also the world famous Cinema Rialto to see a movie at. I wonder what will be showing when I visit (I hope it's Jaws).
There is the old town and markets to visit
Some great local food to try:
I'll definitely find time to go on a camel trek across the Sahara
And I'll make sure to find a nice sunset to take a picture of for JM3
Ladies and gentlemen I give you Casablanca...

Pick 18: SISIMIUT 53.6734° W
There seems to be a few recurring themes in my picks:
-Excellent natural sights
-Remote locations
-Not many tourists to be found
This pick is no different. Greenland is a remote location and Sisimiut is the capital and largest city of the Qeqqata municipality, and the second-largest city in Greenland. 5,572 people live there.
Here it is:
Here it is at night:
Here is the museum they have:
It'll be nice to slow the pace of life down for a couple of days and live like the locals but then I'll want to see what else Greenland has to offer. It's a pretty common thing to go flightseeing in Greenland and I'll take advantage of this to see the local National Park.
Greenland has the largest National Park in the world at 375,000 square miles. I probably won't have time to see it all but I'll do my best:
I might even snap a couple of sunset pictures for a certain someone who has a keen interest in them:
