random question, eyebooger: can the region -> part of a region thing go the other direction?

as in, let's say someone drafts a city. can i then take the region around the city to the extent that it's an independently viable tourist destination, with the understanding that i couldn't visit the city itself?

I would say yes, but you would have to less than half of the interesting stuff in the region. I can't really think of a good example.

Follow-up question, then: how far out from an already-drafted smaller destination does this rule apply to an independently viable larger destination?

To use the specific example I'm thinking of (you, Bloo, and xander are far enough east to potentially exploit this, which is fine):

Crete has been drafted. Santorini has been drafted. There are thousands of Greek Islands out there. If I wanted to draft the Greek Islands generally and island-hop for a week, staying out of Crete and Santorini, I'm guessing I couldn't do that. But I could draft one or more specific and discrete and geographically contiguous groups of islands to island-hop around in, as long as those groups did not contain Crete or Santorini?

I see no problem with that.

It's basically the same thing as me drafting Tahiti and then JM3 drafting Bora Bora. The only difference is the distance between the islands.

yeah, sorry, just trying to see if i can plan ahead a little

there are so many damn places i want to go

10-17-2016 , 05:08 PM
Starting Point: LAS VEGAS 115.1398° W
1st Stop: CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST 122.0308° W
2nd Stop: SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND 169.8926° E
3rd Stop: KYOTO, JAPAN 135.7680° E
4th Stop: HANOI, VIETNAM 105.8342° E
5th Stop: LUANG PRABANG, LAOS 102.1347° E
6th Stop: CHIANG MAI, THAILAND 98.9817° E
7th Stop: MANDALAY PROVINCE, MYANMAR 96.0891° E
8th Stop: KERALA, INDIA 76.2711° E
9th Stop: KASHMIR REGION, INDIA/PAKISTAN 74.7973° E
10th Stop: SHIRAZ, IRAN 52.5837° E
11th Stop: TBILISI AND KAKHETI REGION, GEORGIA, 44.8271° E

Okay, I will regretfully bypass a number of really cool places and do some island-hopping along the Turkish coast:

12th Stop: DODECANESE AND NORTH AEGEAN ISLANDS, GREECE, 28.2176° E

This is basically a contiguous north-south strip spanning from Rhodes and Karpathos up through Ikaria and Samos to Chios and however far north I can make it in a week's time.

I think if I ever actually travel to any of these places or plan a vacation in any of these parts of the world, I'm going to be predisposed to hitting the places I drafted rather than the places other people drafted, which is probably dumb but that's the way the human mind works. Like, I'll be, "yes, let's definitely plan a trip to the Greek Islands! No need to go to Crete or Santorini, though; let's stick to this contiguous north-south strip!"

There's something appropriate about the 12th pick being the Dodecanese islands.

I'm not quit done with African wildlife yet.

Pick #12: Gabon (9.4122)

I'll be hitting Pongara National Park to see the giant turtles:
Spoiler:

But mostly I'll be at Loango National Park. It is called "Africa's Eden". With this incredibly diverse habitat, it's easy to see why:

Spoiler:
Gorillas:

Elephants:

Buffaloes:

Hippos:

Whales:

After three amazing weeks in the African wilderness, I think I'll be ready for some city action soon.
