Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Was just looking through the city draft for my San Diego write-up...I totally forgot what a cluster that whole beginning bit was with all the silly drama.

Anyway, this was my San Diego WRITEUP.

Confirmed travel impossible with 2 small kids. 2 small kids also the reason that all of my travel options come with relaxing beaches because omg relaxing sounds amazing.

i have lots of feels about this post (not in a terrible way!) and i have nothing but for you, so please take it as playfully-if-fatalistically as i intend it when i say:

yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to be 27 with a loving wife and kid(s) and a wealth of world travel experience when i could be fourteen years older and far less well-travelled with no prospect of ever having kids or getting married

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

You can take your small kids to San Diego, though, even if not on real vacations. Here is my oldest enjoying himself there a few months ago...

<3 gad

you are one of my favorite people of the forum without a doubt

idk what to say on this tbh

I'm seeing my next 10 or so years as somewhat limited compared to what I'd like, yours should be relatively free given you don't have to consider how to accommodate children on every trip?

but idk what barriers other people face tbh so maybe they aren't so free

all the <3s whatever

I'm there for literally 32 hours, so probably not. . But I'd love to go to Vermont at some point.

And thanks, Bloo.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Ok, so Beijing.

A lot of you hate this pick, but I can't ignore the amazing history and culture in the capital of the most populous country in the world.

The Forbidden City:

The Great Wall:

Those two sights alone are worth a stop here.

I also have Tiananmen Square:

The Temple of Heaven:

Summer Palace:

I can eat Peking Duck:

And watch an acrobat show or two:

Hate it all you want, but I'll be enjoying myself.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

Agra/Delhi

The biggest reason I'm here will surprise nobody:

People come from all over the world to see the Taj Mahal.

But, that's not all I'll be doing. There's also the Agra Fort:

And another fort in Delhi (Mughal Red Fort):

And the most impressive Jama Masjid mosque:

After touring all of those giant buildings, I'll be headed to Keoladeo Ghana National Park to look at some birds:

And I'll be eating all the butter chicken that I can handle:

I'll let you know next time for sure. Montreal is cool; lots of great bars and restaurants.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread

I accidentally read something about people thinking the Red Fort was cooler than the Taj Mahal today.

Had never even heard of this thing. I would literally never go to India irl, but I think it's cool y'all are going.

from anywhere other than the East Coast, Europe is even further and the stuff to the south of us is generally the same

from the West Coast of the U.S., Tokyo is 11+ hours direct (!), let alone any other part of Asia

we do have Canada. from DC, Montreal is 1.5 hours direct and almost always really expensive (i'm going this weekend because i need to get out of DC, but there are virtually no easy weekend trips out of the country from here), ditto Toronto but slightly cheaper, there are no direct flights from DC to Vancouver and the trip takes almost 8 hours at the low end, ditto Banff and 7+ hours, etc. etc.

the US is big with lots to see (albeit lots of which is also a pain to fly to and not cheap neither), but when it comes to easily visiting other countries, there aren't a ton of options...even before factoring in a culture that views travel abroad as something you should generally only do for business or when you're retired

in any case, both Americans and Australians should be griping at the Brits and Germans and Danes and what-have-you on this board, that's what should really be going on
Thanks for the info, I have only been to Toronto/Niagara/Quebec in the Americas so my knowledge on that part of the world is obv limited!

There is definitely a culture of travelling among certain demographics in Europe/Australia and we are better for it. The more people travel, the more understanding of other cultures there is which makes for a better world in every way. "Patriotism" seems to be very overboard in the USA, and I think this is one of the reasons there isn't more of a travel culture.

As an Irishman, I have the luxury of being welcomed in any country in the world with no prejudice, as we haven't officially declared war on anyone ever

And yes, I am very lucky to be able to fly to any number of vastly different, fascinating cultures for a price not much more than filling up my car with petrol!

Me too and agree on Dubrovnik but Cape Town is easily worth a week. Went through there on honeymoon and could have easily done more than the week we stayed. Can include wine country, garden route, plenty of day trips etc. Prob my second favourite city after Melbourne
