Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Hmmm so you plan to draft a major city & an island that is 367.45 miles away with 1 pick?
Might just have to go with my original plan of taking said island with my next pick anyway.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Meh, if it's a big deal, I'd just take Palawan. It's the real reason I'm going there. Balut sounds gross anyway.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Yeah, lol balut. I don't know, theyre your rules, but it seems aggressive to attempt to claim both. You're allowed a central spot, & then day tripping I think, not split your week between two totally different things.
I skipped Boracay figuring I'd just go to Palawan instead. Oops. Oh well, plenty more islands where that came from.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
For reference purposes to your OP example, the Grand Canyon, which you say is a borderline daytrip from Vegas, is 250 miles from Vegas.

Okay, fair enough. It's pretty clear that Palawan is the reason I'm in the area. I'll just take that.

Cool idea. I figured it out at this point:
but that's probably because I was there last year. Fun city, but lots and lots of American chain stores, and I was disappointed in the lack of drinking culture. Also you should figure out what time of the year you'll hit this spot in your trip, because unlike your other tropical paradises it can get quite unpleasant in certain months.

Was trying to decide between Vientiane and Luang Prabang and ended up with the latter because it's supposed to be so pretty and charming and is so highly-ranked in travel lists I saw.
But I do suspect that, depending on what I was in the mood for, I might have at least as good a time in Vientiane, since it's bigger and more bustling and lively.
In any event, I've heard Laos is AMAZING. I'm tentatively planning an extended SE Asia thing next year, and if I do, I'm definitely headed here.

My dad works out there from time to time, but doubt he ever takes in the cool stuff. I figured I should have at least one authentic Asian city experience mixed in with my tropical galavanting.
Looks like I'm supposed to go between late October & January or in April, so thanks for the heads up on that. My timetable is quite flexible so far, but I'll probably want to be there in approximately mid-April to avoid getting cold elsewhere.

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
Philippines is obviously the greatest holiday destination in the world
Palawan is stunning, and Boracay is great for other reasons!

Not close at all imo. I've been to both and Vientiane is largely regarded as a **** hole and Luang Prabang is indeed incredible.

maybe this is an indictment on me, but if you wrote a random city down instead of "Alaska", I literally would have never heard of any of these places

Re: Around the world vacation -- Game thread
I've been to Hawaii, I've been to Fiji, I've been to Hong Kong, I've been to both islands of New Zealand and I've been to Australia
I want to go places that I've never been to before and are not typical vacation spots. A warm beach or a big famous tower doesn't interest me as much as the different cultures and unique natural sights I could encounter

This is a great attitude for enjoying travelling imo
Although sometimes the unique sights/cultural experience involves the beach or tower I would suggest, but I know what you mean.

I get this 100 percent btw
Worried I'm gonna start competing with you for destinations (and getting sniped) once we clear Asia
