Spade #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Welcome everyone to the game thread for the fourth game of the Game of Mafia Champions series.

You have all been invited to this game for one reason and one reason only: You are champions, you are experts and you are gifted. I did my research and scoured through all the corners of the internet in order to locate the very best mafia players out there. Simply put, you are at the top of the heap.

You all originate from vastly different backgrounds and as a result you have a different set of strategies, standards and rules for how the game is played. You even represent a bunch of different nationalities and demographics. I already predict that these countless differences will lead to frustration. In fact, I promise that it will. However, my hope is that you will ultimately embrace these differences because one thing is for certain: You are all here because you have proven capable of successfully commanding respect and adapting to the games in your respective mafia communities. Therefore you have earned the honor of representing these communities in this unique cross-forum mafia game. But with this privilege also comes responsibility: It is up to you to prove that your site should be taken seriously!

It is now time to see if you can adapt to an environment purely consisting of the best of the best. Maybe this will be a learning and/or humbling experience for many of you.

IT IS NIGHT. DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD.

There is a group chat on Skype that will be spectating and talking about the game. It was a success for the past three games and even caused further cross-over games, so we hope that you'd be interested in joining the fun.

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Rules for the Champions Game
  • Only post / talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players. Don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums. Except for the evil team (or any masonries that might exist). They can chat privately at any time.
  • Don't edit your posts. The idea is everybody gets to see the same information in the thread. You are allowed to link to images, videos, etc., but don't change them. Again, everybody gets the same information in the thread.
  • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating. As would discussing the time stamp of your PM.
  • When the thread is open and the moderator has announced DAY you can post in it. But only as long as you are a live player. No dead posts, please.
  • Vote by bolding a name. To change votes just bold a different name, or unvote. Vote counts will show how much time remains in the day. Votes in the final minute (:00) of day will count. :01 votes won't be counted.
  • Breadcrumbing is allowed. Unbreakable codes or code links + private keys or any stuff resembling that is NOT allowed. So as an example, this is disallowed.
  • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
  • If we believe you to be intentionally angleshooting (bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rule and the game), then that would also be grounds for modkill. Do not try to get fancy or angly with the rules, please.
  • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to this account. We'd be happy to help. You should not be asking the mod questions in the thread.

And for completeness' sake, here is once again a link to the standard game rules for this forum.

IT IS STILL NIGHT! PLEASE DO NOT POST.

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

List of roles which could be in the game:

Every player will have one of the following roles. Most players will be vanilla. Many of the other roles can target one player at night to perform an action. If a role is stackable, it means that a player can have that power in addition to another role. There is no limit to how many of the stackable roles one player may have.

Affiliation Cop (Ivan Danko, Red Heat) - Learns the affiliation of the target, but not role.
Bodyguard (The Terminator, T2 Judgment Day)- If his target is targeted for death, and the kill is not blocked by some other mechanic, the Bodyguard will die in place of his target. If his target is targeted by multiple kills, then both he and the target will die. Has no effect against poison.
Bulletproof (Rocky Balboa, Rocky) - Cannot die at night. If poisoned, he will automatically heal himself. This role can be stacked with another role.
Bus Driver (Ben Richards, Running Man) - Swaps two players at night, such that all actions targeted to each player will go to the other player. (Like a Redirector, but with the power working in both directions.)
Doctor (John Kruger, Eraser) - Target is protected from death at night, even if targeted by multiple kills.
Full Cop (Raymond Tango, Tango and Cash) - Learns role and affiliation of target.
Hypnotist (Jericho Cane, End of Days) - The targeted player's first post on the subsequent day must announce his role in red text. (Does NOT reveal alignment.) It is legal to make such a post without having been hypnotized. If the hypnotized player fails to post with at least one hour remaining in the day, or does not make the proper post, he may be modkilled. The format is simply "I am a/an [role name]." The post may contain other content, as long as the role announcement is the first line and in red. No tricks (such as using small text) can be used to obscure the announcement. The hypnotized player does not have to list modifiers of their role (ie number of uses, nights of usage, etc). If the hypnotized player has multiple roles, then all must be listed. When hypnotized player announces role, mods will not be nazis on formatting, but it must clearly give the information.
Innocent Child (Snaps Provolone, Oscar) - Town only. The mod will confirm this player's alignment in the thread once there are fewer than ten players alive. This role can be stacked with another role.
Healer (Dr. Alex Hasse, Junior) - Targeted player will be healed of poison. Is not effective if the target is poisoned and healed on the same night. This role will only be present if there is at least one Poisoner in the game.
Jack of all Trades (Dutch Schaefer, Predator) - has at least three of the following powers, each of which may be used only once: Full Cop or Affiliation Cop but not both, Role Cop, Doctor, Healer, Jailkeeper, Redirector, Role Blocker, Tracker, Vigilante, Voyeur, Watcher.
Jailkeeper (John Spartan, Demolition Man) - Target is both roleblocked and protected from kills, even if targeted by multiple kills.
Lovers (Harry Tasker, True Lies and Joe Bomowski, Stop or My Mom will Shoot) - Two players of the same affiliation who know each others identities and can chat together 24/7, and who both die when one dies. This role can be stacked with another role.
Neighbors (Kit Latura, Daylight and Howard Langston, Jingle all the Way) - Two players who can chat together 24/7, but with no guarantee of being of the same alignment. This role can be stacked with another role.
Martyr (John Rambo, Rambo) - Has a completely unblockable kill after death. If lynched, the kill must be used during the next Night phase. If nightkilled, the kill must be used during the next Day phase and will be processed immediately after the lynch. This role can be stacked with another role.
Masons (Julius Benedict, Twins, and Freddy Heflin, Cop Land) - Two players of the same alignment who can chat together 24/7. This role can be stacked with another role.
Mechanics Oracle (Douglas Quaid, Total Recall) - Each night, receives a copy of a role PM of one non-vanilla role existing in the game. The role will be selected randomly amongst all roles which have not been previously revealed to him, or revealed during the game in write-ups. Does not learn the identity of the player with the role. If there are no remaining unrevealed non-vanilla roles, he will receive a PM which says so.
Poisoner (Conan, Conan the Barbarian) - Poisons one player per night, which is announced in the next writeup, and that player dies the next night unless targeted by the Healer. If a Poisoner is in the game, there will be at least one Healer.
Redirector (Cobra Cobretti, Cobra) - The player submits two names, and redirects Player X's action to Player Y.
Role Blocker (Jack Slater, Last Action Hero) - Target is prevented from using his powers that night. If the target has modifiers (such as limited number of uses, or cannot target the same player on consecutive nights) on his role, the blocked action will still count toward them.
Role Cop (John Kimble, Kindergarten Cop) - Learns the role of the target, but not affiliation.
Role Thief (Mark Kaminsky, Raw Deal) - The target will be roleblocked, and the thief will gain that power for 1x use in the future. Alternatively, the player may choose to use a previously stolen power. Only one action may be done per night.
Tracker (Gabe Walker, Cliffhanger) - Learns who the target targeted, but not the action.
Traitor (Nathan R. Jessup, A Few Good Men) - Wins if the mafia wins, but is otherwise town in all regards. The mafia are unaware of him, he is unaware of the mafia's identities, he counts as town for the purpose of determining parity (win conditions), and is revealed as town when targeted by an affiliation cop check.
Vanilla (Adam Gibson, The 6th Day) - No powers.
Vigilante (John Matrix, Commando) - Kills the target.
Voyeur (Deke DaSilva, Nighthawks) - Learns what action was done to the target, but not by whom.
Watcher (Gordy Brewer, Collateral Damage) - Learns who targeted the target, but not the action.

Notes about role flavor:
  • Every vanilla villager will be named Adam Gibson (cloned) - example role PM will be posted later.
  • Every role name could have multiples in the game. For example, it would be possible to have two Jack Slaters in the game.
  • If a player has two roles (from stackable roles) the role with the earliest letter in the alphabet will determine role name. For example a Bulletproof Tracker would be Rocky Balboa and a Mason Healer would be Dr. Alex Hasse.
  • All mafia roles will be Jack Nicholson or Dennis Hopper movie role names, regardless if they get an above power.
Modifiers:

All roles may have one or more of the following special rules.
  • Even Nights Only
  • Odd Nights Only
  • Specific Night(s) Only
  • Cannot target the same player on consecutive nights
  • Cannot self-target
  • Limited number of uses
  • Mandatory usage (target will be selected randomly if not submitted)
  • Can be used Night 0 (By default, roles do not act on Night 0.)
Order of night actions:

Role Blocker / Jailkeeper / Role Thief
Redirector / Bus Driver
Bodyguard / Doctor
Cop roles / Mechanics Oracle / Tracker / Watcher / Voyeur / Hypnotist
Poisoner / Healer
Kills

Exception to the above procedure: Martyr kill is unblockable and thus processed before blocking powers, but processed after protecting powers.

Clarification on potential role blocker/jailkeeping/role thieving issues:
Role Blocker/Jailkeeper/Role Thief A -> Role Blocker/Jailkeeper/Role Thief B -> Player C

With the above example role block A goes through and role block B doesn't (so C gets his action).

More on lynch rules:
  • There is no majority lynch in this game. That is, each day always ends at the scheduled time.
  • The condition of must lynch (mafia team being one lynch away from victory) will not be announced.
  • No lynch is not a valid vote until d3 and will be ignored.
Tie votes:

In the event of a tie vote, there will be a sort of "coin flip" to determine the outcome. Specifically, post ID will be the determining factor. Click here for an in depth explanation.

IT IS STILL NIGHT! PLEASE DO NOT POST.

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Some tips to make the forum easier to use:

Sometimes you want to read a single player. Here are 2 ways to do it.

From the forum page, click the number next to the thread title (488 here). This brings up a window called "Who Posted". From there click the number next to a poster to see their posts in the search page.

OR From within the thread, click search this thread at the top, then advanced search.

This brings up a window where you can enter a poster name and / or keywords.

Here is a sample search result. Click the title within a post to go to that post.

Use my twoplustwo / Edit Options to change the look & feel of the forum.

There you may want to make yourself invisible. This means your name doesn't appear at the bottom of the forum page while you are reading. Almost all the regular players here use invisible.

Change your posts/page from the default 15 to a number that suits you.

Tell the forum your timezone.

Maybe try different colors.

Don't forget to click Save Changes.

---

There is a twoplustwo app for phones that is like tapatalk.

---

Also note that each vote count has more info than just votes:
  • The number in (99) is how many times that player has posted.
  • You can click the names to go to the post with the vote.
  • It shows you how much time remains in the day.

---

Finally, for spectators from other forums... Register an account so you can set posts per page, colors / timezone, and use the phone app. It makes for much easier reading.

STILL NIGHT, YO.

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Additional Notes:
  • All roles can be either good or evil, unless stated otherwise. When designing the game, no preconceptions were used about which roles are traditionally good or evil. The only objective was to ensure a setup that gives each side a fair chance of winning. The only guarantee about the setup is that the town will have some investigative power.
  • There are no powers which affect the voting or the lynch. The player with the most votes will always die.
  • All players win with either the town or the mafia. There are no independent/neutral roles.
  • All players have full information about their role and alignment at the start of the game, and it will never change.
  • All information from the mod is 100% reliable. All death reveals and cop checks are accurate. There are no Godfather or Miller roles, etc. All investigative roles will be made aware if their action was redirected to a different target. Affiliation checks on the Traitor are a unique case, due to the ambiguity of the role itself.
  • Some roles do not receive any feedback from the mod when performing an action. These roles will not learn if their action has been manipulated. For investigative roles, which do receive feedback, they will receive some feedback if their action has been manipulated. They will know who their action targeted, in case it is different than what they submitted. And they will learn if their action has failed. They will not learn the exact mechanics which caused the redirection or the failure.
  • There are no Day actions, except when the Martyr is killed at night.
  • Once a player is dead and has fulfilled his roles, there are no mechanics which might enable him to participate again in the game.
  • The mafia team kill is a collective action and cannot be roleblocked, tracked to an individual, etc, even if only one mafia is alive. It can still fail as a result of Doctor and Bodyguard mechanics. If the Watcher observes the mafia team kill, it will be revealed to him as "the mafia team", or something to that effect.
  • The game begins at Night 0. Some roles may have actions. No kills occur on Night 0.
  • No role may use more than one power or target more than one person per night, aside from roles which specifically require two targets to be submitted.
  • Deaths will be posted in random order. It is not possible to know who was responsible for each death. The Poisoner is somewhat different, since the mod will announce who has been poisoned. But even here, it will not be possible to know if the poison killed him, or if he ended up dying for different reasons.

STILL NIGHT. RECOGNIZE!

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

#1 Player: CalledDownLight

Username for this game: CalledDownLight

Representing: Sporting Events

Started playing in: 2009

Qualifications:
CalledDownLight is entering this game as Sporting Events' probably most well respected mafia player. At least, he was the highest drafted SE'er in the 2+2 mafia draft of 2012 where he was picked at the 8th spot. A whole two rounds ahead of the second highest drafted SE'er.

Additionally, he's by far the most experienced SE'er with a total of 116 games played. Though a larger sample size is obviously needed to be able to say anything definitively, it's still worth mentioning that CalledDownLight is the player with the second highest win percentage out of the 30+ players with 100+ games on 2+2 and fourth highest out of the 100+ players with 50+ games.

Bio:
CalledDownLight thought that writing his own bio included writing about his qualifications himself, so the following is a bit more than the usual 2-3 sentences that I ask for:

"As twoplustwo's most talented villager and most feared wolf CDL has rustled the jimmies of fellow players a little too much to be voted into the previous editions of the Game of Champions. His bold and colorful approach to the game is unique among players on 2p2. On the villager side of things, he is known to be aggressive, unrelenting, and loud while always following through on his reads and pushing for the lynch of wolf reads and willing to throw himself in the line of fire to save his villa reads. As a wolf, he is radically anti-bussing, highly organized, and highly available to teammates constantly looking to push any edge no matter how minor. He manages all of this without sacrificing tone as he manages to replicate his villager game, but puts a pro-wolf spin on it. Of players with a large sample size of games, CDL ranks near the top of every statistical category, especially win percentage so look for him to come out on top."

#2 Player: corycurren

Username for this game: corycurren

Representing: WalterFootball

Started playing in: 2009 (IRL mafia), 2013 (forum mafia)

Qualifications:
corycurren joins this game as one of the most talented players from WalterFootball. Despite only having played for little over a year, he was ranked the third best player in the latest mafia rankings on WalterFootball from a couple of months ago (second place was Ragnarok, a previous representative).

Also, corycurren already has experience playing against people from other sites, having participated in cross-over games that occurred as a result of this series. As such he's already tested himself against previous Champions who in turn have vouched for corycurren's skills.

corycurren has never been mislynched.

Bio:
"I am a thought process player and a YOLO patriarch."

#3 Player: DarthPunk

Username for this game: DarthPunk

Representing: Team Liquid

Started playing in: 2012

Qualifications:
Team Liquid has been represented with 2 players in all three past Champion games and when these representatives were approached about providing suggestions for a currently active great player that had so far been left out, DarthPunk's name was mentioned.

DarthPunk was recently nominated for both Best Town Performance as well as Best Third Party Performance in the 2013 awards. Other highlights of his include having the second highest total win percentage on TL, the highest town win percentage and the highest mini game win percentage.

Bio:
"Well, my strengths are: Catching mafia as town and not getting caught as scum.

Being able to lynch people and not get lynched myself.

I dunno. I am pretty good at the game. I have a reputation for being a bit of an arsehole. I completely believe in using every tool at my disposal to win."

#4 Player: djarm67

Username for this game: djarm67

Representing: Atheist Foundation of Australia

Started playing in: 2012

Qualifications:
djarm67 is the administrator of the AFA forums, which he was also determined to be the champion of after consulting with some of the site’s top players. He is also vouched for by a previous representative from MindRomp, a site that shares some of its player base with AFA.

Bio:
"As I am always vanilla town, I do my best to help town win by creating lists which are inevitably wrong. If I say so and so is scum, they are most likely an already outed town special."

#5 Player: DWetzel

Username for this game: DWetzel

Representing: Puzzles and Other Games

Started playing in: 2012

Qualifications:
DWetzel started out playing mafia on hattrick.org and then moved on to greener pastures here on 2+2 where he quickly established himself as a rising star.

He was drafted in the early second round of the most recent 2+2 mafia draft where he had the honor of being (by a significant margin) the highest pick out of anyone with less than 2 years of experience. He is, in other words, the hottest new chick on the block.

Bio:
"I think I'm a pretty analytical player (which often means I suck early on when there's not a lot to go on). I try to be a very villagery wolf and an even more villagery villager, so if you don't think I sound villagery it's more than likely your fault and not mine."

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

#6 Player: Ernie.

Username for this game: Shills

Representing: Something Awful

Started playing in: 2013

Qualifications:
Ernie. earned the second highest amount of votes in the public poll on who should represent Something Awful in the last game, but it was decided that a different pairing was optimal and so he graciously sat out. This time he was insta-shipped off though.

Bio:
"I started playing mafia in 2013 on the SA forums because I was going through a rough bout of loneliness in real life and thought a good scratch to that itch would be playing forum games with people online. Soon enough, I started making friends there, some of which I've met real life, some of which I've sat up all night with exchanging music recommendations with, and some of which I've been the head cheerleader for when they participate in other forum games or go on a first date or complain about school. When I finally got my life on track and started a new relationship, I wanted to tell my mafia friends first, so really, I don't see mafia (or the community I'm part of) as just online shenanigans, but actual friends I hang out with first, and people I design and play games with second.

And that spills over into my play-style. I mostly try to push people and analyze where they would draw a line that they wouldn't cross (considering mafia is a game of people first) when it comes to deception, and hence figure out their motivations for saying things, if I'm town. As scum, I like to push people to trust me by creating many false dichotomies. The great thing about my play-style is that both of these 'metas' overlap well together, and I can generally enjoy myself just by being as noisy and obnoxious as possible and gauging how people read into my play to feed back into my process.

And I have also caught merk as scum once, so that's better than all the other champions from the previous games have done."

#7 Player: Gamer Dude

Username for this game: Gamer Dude

Representing: Neoseeker

Started playing in: 2013

Qualifications:
Despite still being relatively new to the game, Gamer Dude received a lot of support to join this game, including from the previous Neoseeker representative and other veteran players. He'd already shown his dedication to the series by reading the entirety of the game thread for the third Champion game which is no small feat.

His interest in behavioral analysis is what caused him to play the game and it probably played no small part in him dominating to the point that he was crowned Best New Player of 2013.

Bio:
"A man who needs no introduction"

#8 Player: Guild

Username for this game: Guild

Representing: Talking Time

Started playing in: 2004

Qualifications:
Guild was decided as the clear representative within an hour, or at least close to it.

Guild also has the honor of being the person with the longest history of playing mafia in this game, going all the way back to 2004. He's played on MafiaScum, Grey Labyrinth, Pyoko, Brontoforumus, three other forums he can't recall now and various nerdy hipster conventions and friend/acquaintance meetups in person. He's moderated close to 40 games of mafia.

Bio:
"It's been said that Guild's ability to ruin a game of mafia is unrivaled. His nonsense and rhetoric are belied only by his ability to catch the right mafia for the wrong reasons then pretend he did it on purpose. Guild is particularly fond of police state interrogation manuals, NLP and faking emotional outbursts."

#9 Player: J

Username for this game: _J_

Representing: Smashboards

Started playing in: 2010

Qualifications:
J was unanimously agreed upon as the best player with the guts to take on this challenging game.

As for bragging rights, J can boast a 90%+ win rate as town and a lot of MVP nominations.

Bio:
"My personal strengths to approaching the game would be reading emotion and looking at the subtext of what people mean. My approach to the game is unconventional, but provides results. A strength would also be my patience/perseverance in mafia.

I play this game for fun and for the enjoyment of debate. So in the end, let's just have fun together playing this game!"

#10 Player: jcohen

Username for this game: jcohen

Representing: Part Time Poker

Started playing in: 2008

Qualifications:
jcohen was the clear choice from Part Time Poker and is the only person to have been invited for all previous games and to have declined all invitations. Finally, he accepted.

Though Part Time Poker doesn't do awards, jcohen was nearly unanimously listed as number 1 on people's lists when a thread was created asking people to list the top 10 players.

He's also enjoyed immense success on 2+2 where he had the best turbo stats in 2013 out of people with 10+ games played. He followed up on this success by placing both second and fourth in a turbo series that was run back in April (you could re-enter after having played 10 games with a new batch of 10 games).

Bio:
"I care about the game and I want to win. I have strong opinions about how the game should be played which are often fairly contrarian. I believe you can't be confident in your reads until you've reread things. I thrive when the game becomes most strategical, and so I consider my biggest strength to be that I dominate endgames."

#11 Player: Lawrencelot

Username for this game: Lawrencelot

Representing: xkcd

Started playing in: 2006

Qualifications:
Lawrencelot started his mafia career on mafiascum back in 2006, took a break, and then turned to xkcd as his new destination for getting his mafia fix.

He was chosen as the representative through a public poll thread.

Bio:
"I try to observe as much as I can during the first part of the game. Only when I am very sure about something, either through logic or gut, I start making cases and influencing the game. I may be a slow starter, but if you don't kill me soon you might regret it..."

#12 Player: Luckbox Inc

Username for this game: Luckbox Inc

Representing: Puzzles and Other Games

Started playing in: 2007

Qualifications:
Luckbox Inc is one of the most elite veteran players from Puzzles and Other Games with 130+ games to his name.

He's been ranked consistently high since the very beginning of his career, being an early second round pick in the 2009 mafia draft and a first round pick in the 2012 mafia draft.

Bio:
"Tone Toan taon! I'm a super wolfy villager. I refuse to explain my reads because it's almost always tone and you either understand that or you don't and likely never will. If I don't find a wolf on D1 don't expect me to be useful till the endgame, where I POE the crap outta wolves. Also, meta."

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

#13 Player: Mattchew

Username for this game: Mattchew

Representing: DailyMafia

Started playing in: 2011

Qualifications:
Mattchew is widely regarded as one of the absolute top tier players from the DailyMafia community (a community of 200+ people who play live mafia on a daily basis). This status has also ensured him a spot in the Tuesday Mafia All-Stars line-up alongside several previous Champions.

He furthermore has experience playing on Team Liquid as well as EpicMafia.

Bio:
"I am Mattchew, you should have probably heard of me.

I am extremely aggressive with no fear of being wrong. I am willing to take blame for wrong lynches as long as I believe they are correct. I play to win at all costs."

#14 Player: Missing Person

Username for this game: Missing Person

Representing: shoryuken

Started playing in: 2013

Qualifications:
A public vote was held to determine the two representatives from Shoryuken. There were surprisingly many contenders for the top 2 spots, but ultimately Missing Person managed to sneak in.

Missing Person was awarded the SRK Mafia VIII Miles Edgeworth Award for incriminating mafia, being voted into the inaugural SRK Mafia All-Stars game, and is currently the most frequent Night 1 fear kill on SRK.

Bio:
"I post a ****ton, thanking God for a lack of a spam filter on SRK, often getting a little bit of suspicion thrown my way due to my seemingly erratic play. However, I always have to remind everyone in game that there is a rhyme to my reason, and usually, regardless of my alignment, I'm able to prove that what I was doing makes sense."

#15 Player: nickismyname

Username for this game: Nickismyname

Representing: BoardGameGeek

Started playing in: Early 2000's (live), 2013 (forum)

Qualifications:
Four top tier BoardGameGeek entered a public poll thunderdome. Two left, one of those being nickismyname.

His claim to fame on BGG mostly comes from being last year's Rookie of the Year as well as placing second in BGG's yearly Ironman Werewolf Tournament, an elimination tournament style of multiple games of mafia played over several rounds.

Bio:
"My strengths are mostly getting lucky and trying not to get in the way of my teammates. Some say I have a tone that always reads good, and to be fair I'm rarely an early game lynch but often a Midgame one. I have a knack for seeing how games will play out, but I often overthink these things. I'm also good at enjoying myself while playing."

#16 Player: Phelanpt

Username for this game: Phelanpt

Representing: BoardGameGeek

Started playing in: 2008

Qualifications:
Phelanpt received the most votes in the public poll that decided the two BoardGameGeek representatives.

In the recent 2013 awards, Phelanpt was nominated for "Best Performance as a Villager", "Best Performance as a Good Special", and "Player of the Year".

Phelanpt also has experience playing on other sites, including mafiascum and EpicMafia.

Bio:
"I stand by a mix of tone reads and logic. Neither of those by itself gives me good results, so I'm somewhere in between. Also, I never fake emotions."

#17 Player: President Eden

Username for this game: Pres Eden

Representing: webDiplomacy

Started playing in: 2013

Qualifications:
President Eden is a moderator at webDiplomacy where he just launched its mafia community a little over a month ago. It was quickly agreed that Eden was indeed the site's champion.

Eden also has experience from playing on Talking Time.

Bio:
"Mafia is a performance art of the human mind and an excellent test of its players' logical-analytical and intuitive-reading skills. I favor the townside portion of the game because it is fundamentally honest and seeking to discover the truth."

#18 Player: Rokk_Krinn

Username for this game: Rokk_Krinn

Representing: HeroClix Realms

Started playing in: 2007

Qualifications:
Rokk_Krinn was immediately named as the super obvious choice for HeroClix Realms when the community was being asked for a representative.

Bio:
In the words of fellow players:

"If Rokk wants you to believe the sun rises in the west, by day's end you will believe the sun rises in the west."

“Strengths: He is Rokk.”

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

#19 Player: sjg11

Username for this game: sjg11

Representing: PlayDiplomacy

Started playing in: 2011

Qualifications:
sjg11 was chosen as the representative for PlayDiplomacy through public discussion.

He was nominated for Best Townie, Best Scum, Best Overall Player and for Best Individual Performance in the 2013 Playdip Awards. The results were never officially published, but... He may or may not have won at least one of those awards.

Bio:
"My style of play is simple. I'm active, I engage and I try to work out the puzzle of the game. I try to listen to other people and I try to push my own beliefs. I don't have a list of tells which always tell me who the scum are, I view a scumtell as something a scum would be more likely to do than a townie in the context of that particular game at that particular time. For this reason my scumhunting tends to be flexible, I adapt to circumstances."

#20 Player: Synonym

Username for this game: Synonym

Representing: shoryuken

Started playing in: 2013

Qualifications:
There were a lot of contenders for the top 2 spots in the public vote on shoryuken, but as was clear from the beginning Synonym was the clear favorite. Everyone else was fighting for second place.

Despite still being new, Synonym's already been named MVP several times. He's also never been mislynched.

Bio:
"G'day, Synoynm's the name and lynchin' is my game. I like to look for interactions in-thread and base a lot of my reads on behind the scenes techniques. One of the principles I play mafia around is never role claiming unless it's unavoidable. Code speak makes me angrier than a frog in a sock, so you'll be hard pressed to get any out of me.

Away from the keyboard I'm a Doctor working at a busy public hospital, and I enjoy a nice scotch or whiskey while relaxing. I'm an Aussie so my schedule, coupled with work, may have me posting at odd hours of the day and night."

#21 Player: SystemOverload

Username for this game: SystemOverload

Representing: EpicMafia

Started playing in: 2012

Qualifications:
Amazingly, two EpicMafia players have qualified for the Ultimate Game despite being underdogs in a setting that is unusual and non-standard for them. Both these Champions recommended SystemOverload as a serious mafia player (former moderator) with serious skills (2 trophies to his name). He will be trying to ensure EM the hattrick.

He's not completely new to forum mafia though, having played on Giant in the Playground in the past.

Bio:
"Expect textwalls. I'm an overly analytical player that likes to believe that there's a logical explanation to everything. I generally progressively get better as the game plays out."

#22 Player: Tattersail_

Username for this game: Tattersail

Representing: Malazan Empire

Started playing in: 2009

Qualifications:
Malazan Empire is another of those sites with a clear champion: Tattersail. In fact, he received such overwhelming support so quickly that I had to PM people to make sure that he wasn't a troll pick (which he certainly isn't).

He's a very experienced player, having played close to 100 games.

A fellow player's words on Tattersail:

"Tattersail has earned the Mafia card 'Ever-Present of High House Mafia'. This means that when the attendance register is called, his hand always shoots up with a delightfully girlish squeal of, "Yes sir, here sir!". The only games that Tattersail has missed in living or recorded memory are ones modded by himself. This enthusiasm translates into his style of play, which has been politely referred to as "rambunctious" and not-so-politely referred to as "a headless chicken". However, do not let this benign exterior fool you. Beneath sits a mafia warrior unafraid to prod and push absolutely anyone or anything, with a dark streak of cunning cunningly disguised by his innocently exuberant expression, and an absolutely uncanny instinct as town in sniffing out scum. Should Tattersail survive a day 1 lynching (always his most vulnerable time), then the opposing team would be right to fear."

Bio:
"I would say my weakness is figuring out mechanics. Especially in the higher TDMi games. I would say my strength is to usually look scummy enough to keep alive but not scummy enough to be lynched. End game is my main strength, when it comes down to the last few players and we need to find scum."

#23 Player: The Moocher

Username for this game: The Moocher

Representing: Puzzles and Other Games

Started playing in: 2011

Qualifications:
The Moocher joins this game as one of the last few players picked in the first round of the 2014 mafia draft to not already have repped POG.

He is known for not playing a heavy volume of games, but playing at an elite level in the games he does play. In the early 2013 power rankings The Moocher even managed to place as the 8th best villager, 7th best mafia player and 8th best overall player despite having played only 15 games at the time.

Bio:
"You're only as good as your next game."

#24 Player: windshipper

Username for this game: dils

Representing: Something Awful

Started playing in: 2007

Qualifications:
windshipper was decided as the second representative for Something Awful through a public vote.

Here he describes one of his crowning achievements: "I've been banned from MafiaScum (back in 2007 or 2008?). I only played one game there as scum and we won in a landslide. Then they did a mass purging of SomethingAwful members. It was pretty funny and a strangely enjoyable experience for many reasons."

Bio:
"My main strengths are thoughts on motivations (why someone would do something in that position/what I would think to do in that position), analysis of posts and actions. I also tend to be very opaque under pressure and keep my hand close to my chest. In addition, I am usually fairly active both as scum and town unless real life prevents it for one reason or another."

#25 Player: WWWwombat

Username for this game: WWWWombat

Representing: Dragonmount

Started playing in: 2009

Qualifications:
Ever since asking for representatives from Dragonmount for the first game, Wombat's name has been thrown around repeatedly as a "must get" and the stars have finally aligned.

He is vehemently vouched for by all the previous DM representatives. And almost every year he is nominated for Player of the Year.

Bio:
"My approach to the game is that I try not to get locked into any one way of playing the game as town or scum. I use strategies that I think are generally effective, but I care far more about the specifics of the game I am playing than sticking to tried-and-true methods. The only thing I try to avoid completely is ignoring my gut."

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

NIGHT 0

2031

The intelligence was clear. The intelligence was accurate. The battle between the citizen coalitions and the mafia had been going on a long time, even before the Mafia globalization crisis. But this time they had gone too far and were playing with the fate of the world.

Seven years ago Coalition leaders had learned of nibblings the Mafia were having with the banished Dr. Jergerov. They had promised to monitor the situation but given the Mafia's penchant for retaining control, most deemed the threat "low to moderate probability." But some corners of the Coalition were not so sure. Mafia would never open the gate to a power greater than them, a new Mafia that would unseat every one of them, would they. But now this is just what they did.

Dr. Jergerov had been working for years on the Fictional Dimension Project (FDP). It had eventually floundered. His supporters fell away. But he continued to toil alone with this гіперреальність. His advances were small, but steady. He caught the Mafia at a desperate time, just after the Demolition of Elders. The Mafia caught him at an opportune time. They naturally pooled their funds and now here we are.

"The intelligence brief says they have selected Nicholson and Hopper," an attendant said.

Sgt. Poodle nodded.

"Naturally. Who else would they select? Can you think of other minds with less foul creations dancing around?"

A muted garbled chorus of affirmation followed.

Coalition strategists then took their turn, each presenting a fairly traditional solution:

"Shall we organize a task force?"

"Useless," replied Poodle

Another.

"A drone?"

"If you want to lose it."

Again.

"We have our best assassins at the ready"

"Not...best...enough. Look the Mafia have organized a plan against anything traditional. Anything on the ground will get torn apart by the Nicholsons and Hoppers, as well"

The room was silent for a moment. A door creaked open, pausing more. Suddenly, a hearty laugh bellowed out and the door swung open hard against the wall. Bo Wulf, a man who managed to mix portions of old Naval regalia and overalls strode in.

"No, he means to unleash the Champions," he announced.

The crowd was perplexed.

Wulf looked at Poodle, displeasingly. Undeterred, Poodle then defended himself:

"You think we would not prepare for every scenario? Their champions required champions of our own. If they want to extrapolate the fictional subconscious into reality, then we will as well, regardless of the future implications."

Wulf replied, "If that's what it takes. If you can deal with the consequences"

Poodle motioned. The floor shifted and corridors appeared below. A gentle humming began.

"Ready the Arnolds and Stallones"

IT IS DAY! YOU MAY POST.

Where do you FTR that you'd be going to bed right now?

I still have about 2-3 hours until I head that way myself.

Re: #4 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Morning all. I hope we can get organised and get going quickly here.

First things' first, can we please all agree not to vig kill during the early game? It really doesn't help the town, it doesn't provide as much information as a lynch would and will likely just result in one dead townie without any voting data behind their death. Keep the gun holstered for now. This situation can be reviewed in the late game where a vig kill might be a good idea in certain situations.

Secondly, it's going to take a while to get used to how the game is played on our different sites. Personally I'll never lynch based off of a tone based case, tone can be useful for pointing to a player who needs a deeper look but I'll never lynch based off of tone alone. There has to be more to an argument than that.

Thirdly, most of us are working on a the same team here. This means we need to be organised and disciplined. If we aren't we'll likely lose. This links back to my point about vigs should keep their guns holstered, doing so is simply solid team play.

As a player I will be active and work hard for the town. I don't care if I'm killed at night if my team wins. If everyone works hard for the group and provides as much data as possible then our chances of winning greatly increase.

This links into my final point. I have no sympathy for lurkers or people who don't explain votes, with the possible exception of early game random voting. Lurking or not explaining things simply harms the team, if we explain our opinions to each other and develop reads as a group our chances of winning increase. The same applies to lurkers, by contributing ideas and providing data you reduce your chances of distracting the town and help other players develop their reads.

Oh, and finally, any Spurs fans here?

Lurking or not explaining things simply harms the team, if we explain our opinions to each other and develop reads as a group our chances of winning increase. The same applies to lurkers, by contributing ideas and providing data you reduce your chances of distracting the town and help other players develop their reads.

Oh, and finally, any Spurs fans here?
About vig's, if the Vig can vigilante every night do you still think they shouldnt? I think its reasonable given the random chance of hitting an evil. If they have limited uses Im inclined to agree with you though.

How do you plan on lynching D1 if it wont be off tone?
