Spade #3 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Welcome everyone to the game thread for the third game of the Game of Mafia Champions series.

You have all been invited to this game for one reason and one reason only: You are champions, you are experts and you are gifted. I did my research and scoured through all the corners of the internet in order to locate the very best mafia players out there. Simply put, you are at the top of the heap.

You all originate from vastly different backgrounds and as a result you have a different set of strategies, standards and rules for how the game is played. You even represent a bunch of different nationalities and demographics. I already predict that these countless differences will lead to frustration. However, my hope is that you will ultimately embrace these differences because one thing is for certain: You are all here because you have proven capable of successfully commanding respect and adapting to the games in your respective mafia communities. Therefore you have earned the honor of representing these communities in this unique cross-forum mafia game. But with this privilege also comes responsibility: It is up to you to prove that your site should be taken seriously!

It is now time to see if you can adapt to an environment purely consisting of the best of the best. Maybe this will be a learning and/or humbling experience for many of you.

IT IS NIGHT. DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD (YET)

Re: #3 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Rules for the Champions Game
  • Only post / talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players. Don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums. Except for the evil team (or any masonries that might exist). They can chat privately at any time.
  • Don't edit your posts. The idea is everybody gets to see the same information in the thread. You are allowed to link to images, videos, etc., but don't change them. Again, everybody gets the same information in the thread.
  • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating. As would discussing the time stamp of your PM
  • When the thread is open and the moderator has announced DAY you can post in it. But only as long as you are a live player. No dead posts, please.
  • Vote by bolding a name. To change votes just bold a different name, or unvote. Vote counts will show how much time remains in the day. Votes in the final minute (:00) of day will count. :01 votes won't be counted.
  • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win. (We usually prohibit offering wagers in our own games, necessary since so many players here are poker players.)
  • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to this account. We'd be happy to help. You should not be asking the mod questions in the thread

SPECTATORS

Spectator chat on Skype

If you're reading along with this game and you're thinking "Man, I wish I could talk to some like minded Mafia fanatics about these people", then you're in luck! There is a group chat on Skype that will be spectating and talking about the game. Dead players are added as well.

If you wish to be added, send a message on Skype to zayana74 or iversonian

Re: #3 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

Setup

There are 24 players in the game.

Potential power roles in the game (roles not listed here are NOT in the game!)
  • Affiliation seer/cop (is only informed if peeked person is good/evil)
  • Angel/doctor (may self protect - may not protect the same person twice in a row)
  • Bodyguard (may choose to act as a bodyguard for a person, if that person dies at night, they die instead - may not target the same person twice in a row)
  • Bulletproof (cannot die at night)
  • Full seer/cop (peeks true role, both affiliation and powers are revealed)
  • Jack of all Trades (has an assortment of 4 powers and uses one per night: Peek, Vigilante kill, Role block and Angel/doctor save)
  • Lovers (24 hour chat, know who each other are, both die when one is killed)
  • Martyr (can kill someone after they've died)
  • Masons (24 hour chat, know who each other are)
  • Oracle (can consult the dead - sends one message to a dead villager per night)
  • Poisoner (can target someone for death, person dies the next night)
  • Prostitute (can both angel+role block someone - may not use this power on the same person twice in a row)
  • Randomizer (can target someone to have their night action randomized - may not use this power on the same person twice in a row)
  • Redirector (can target someone and choose who their potential night action should be redirected to - may not use this power on the same person twice in a row)
  • Role blocker (can target someone who will get their night action blocked - may not use this power on the same person twice in a row)
  • Role thief (this person starts the game with the option to steal someone's powers before role PM's were sent out to other players)
  • Survivor (wins if he survives the game and village wins)
  • Tracker (sees who player X visited, i.e. who player X used their potential night action on)
  • Vigilante (can target someone for death at night)
  • Watcher (sees who visited player X, i.e. who - if any - used their night action(s) on him/her)

There may be further limitations on these roles, such as only being able to use them on odd or even nights, or only until a certain number of players remain, or limited number of uses.

If you can think of a restriction, odds are, it's been done.

Order of night actions
Role blocker/Prostitute
Redirector
Randomizer
Oracle
Angel/Doctor/Bodyguard
Seer/Tracker/Watcher
Kills

Clarification on potential role blocker/prostitution issues:
Role blocker/Prostitute A -> Role blocker/Prostitute B -> Player C

With the above example role block A goes through and role block B doesn't (so C gets his action).

General notes on the setup and its implications
  • There are no roles which affect the validity of peeks.
  • There are no neutral roles or factions.
  • There are no roles which affect the lynch or the death reveals.
  • There are no lost mafia, meaning mafia members who aren't already a part of the main mafia team.
  • There are no revival mechanics.
Role reveal

Upon death a person's full role will always be revealed. Night kills will not have attribution. All the players who died during the night will be listed in alphabetical order with no flavor indicating how they died.

Win conditions

Win condition is for the village/town to eliminate the wolves/mafia and the wolves to achieve parity with the village. Parity for the purpose of this game will be when the number of wolves equals the number of villagers and there is no way for the village to win the game.

Re: #3 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

A few additional notes:
  • There is no majority-lynch in this game. That is, each day always ends at the scheduled time.
  • The condition of must-lynch (wolves/mafia team being one lynch away from victory) will not be announced, as in the previous games.
  • No-lynch is not a valid vote until d3 and will be ignored.

Re: #3 Game of Mafia Champions (WW Invitational) - Game Thread

#1 Player: Ace

Username for this game: Ace_TL

Representing: Team Liquid.

Started playing in: 2006.

Qualifications:
After lots of practice and experience, Ace has managed to become widely known on Team Liquid for being a scum killing townie and a town ruining scum. He's written a bunch on various mafia topics, and he is perhaps most famous for his incomplete Mafia Manifesto (a general guideline to winning as scum). His skills as scum also very convincingly got him the win for Best Mafia Player Overall in 2011 as well as the win for Best Individual Mafia Performance that same year.

He earned his way into this game by way of recommendation from the previous representatives. He and Palmar have been called the maybe strongest pair of players yet to be sent from Team Liquid.

Bio:
"I'm an analytic type of player that requires logic to get my point across. I tend to look at the game as one big story, and see players as characters and discussion as events. When the story gets out of whack I think Mafia/bad players are involved, and then it's just an exercise in picking out who is what. I also tend to post lots of gifs, sarcasm, *yawns*, ego boosting rhetoric and will play for myself if I get bored."

#2 Player: aedan777

Username for this game: Aedan777

Representing: Paradox Interactive.

Started playing in: 2013.

Qualifications:
aedan777 is representing the new school of mafia players on Paradox Interactive.

When THE_SPLIT unfortunately had to drop from the game, quickly-formed consensus led to aedan777 earning the privilege to replace him. One of his recent games where he won as the final mafia in a 30-person game was singled out as just one example of aedan being a rising star.

He is described as a ruthless, observant and mildly sadistic player by his peers.

Bio:
"Generally fairly quiet, but can be very active when I need to be. Always observant with a sharp eye for suspicious activity."

#3 Player: Alan Tansley

Username for this game: Analstanley

Representing: Grand Prix Racing Online.

Started playing in: 2011.

Qualifications:
Alan Tansley was chosen to represent Grand Prix Racing Online through a public vote. He and two others were unanimously agreed upon as the clear champions of the site, and the winner was ultimately Alan who's taking the week off work especially for this game. That's dedication.

One of his special skills that he's grown quite a reputation for is being able to come up with sophisticated fake claims.

Bio:
"I like to throw my vote around and get people talking. First and foremost, the game should be fun, and after that you just have to follow your instincts."

#4 Player: Arcbell

Username for this game: Arcbell

Representing: EpicMafia.

Started playing in: 2013.

Qualifications:
Arcbell was consistently named as one of the top current (non-cheating) mafia players by EpicMafia's most highly decorated players.

He only joined EpicMafia in June 2013, but since then he's already become a well-respected moderator, has earned a bronze trophy and founded a "mafia clan" with a dozen members that currently has a combined total of 7 trophies to its credit.

Bio:
"I'm not an aggressive player. I will win by creative application of logic and reads. Or maybe I won't. I'll consider any strategy that will win this game... You'll probably find yourself going along with it too!"

#5 Player: BlackWerewolfGenie

Username for this game: BlackWerewolfGenie

Representing: PokkeriProd.

Started playing in: 2013.

Qualifications:
BlackWerewolfGenie earned the right to represent PokkeriProd as their champion through a public vote.

Being a young gun his Estonian home site wasnt enough to satiate his hunger though and so hes also been playing regularly in Puzzles and Other Games.

Bio:
"I find myself as the Sherlock Holmes of Werewolf. I tend to dig in deep and notice things or so called slips which other players usually miss. Whether I'm always on the right path or not is a topic for another discussion. In the backwoods of Old Banaania we have diagnosed this as BWG-syndrome."

Qualifications:
Capt. Kiwi was chosen as one of two representatives for Paradox Interactive through a public vote.

When he first started out he earned the title of superstar rookie and now hes just a superstar.

Bio:
"I'm a methodical player who looks to create key moments where players must make meaningful decisions. I'm strongest in smaller games or known setups."

#7 Player: Crunkus

Username for this game: Crunkus

Representing: Play Diplomacy.

Started playing in: 2009.

Qualifications:
Crunkus was decided to be Play Diplomacy's champion through a public vote.

At the very first mafia awards show ever hosted on Play Diplomacy, Crunkus ran away with the two big ones: The 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the award for Best Overall Player.

He's also active on the modding side of things, being a moderator of the mafia subforum and having won the award for Best Mafia GM two years in a row.

Bio:
"Expect me to ask plenty of questions, and to try to understand the process behind what you do and say. Expect me to be transparent about my own process so that you have the opportunity to do the same. I'm here to enjoy myself just like everyone else, but expect me to play mafia."

#8 Player: Despothera

Username for this game: Despothera

Representing: Dragonmount.

Started playing in: 2011.

Qualifications:
Despothera was chosen to represent Dragonmount on account of being recommended by the site's previous representatives as well as other prominent players from the community.

Despothera actually started playing mafia back in high school when he was on the Academic Decathlon team. Now he's a champion of the forum version of the game with an excellent win/loss-record which earned him the top spot in the latest mafia scoreboard/standings. Many of these victories he surprisingly pulled out either by letting the scum team think they were leading him along or by getting himself lynched as scum just to watch town cannibalize itself while buried in his wifom.

In addition to this, he was one of the recent finalists for "Best Mafia Player" on Dragonmount.

Bio:
"One of my big strengths as a mafia player is keeping my town and scum meta extremely similar - players who often play with me still struggle to meta read me because of this. I also love walking the thin line by acting scummy enough to avoid being night killed, but not scummy enough to get lynched. I play in a way that produces reactions in the most efficient manner, and although my schedule won't allow me to be as active during the day (I work third shift) I often compensate for that by doing continuous rereads and putting hours into wall of text's, and lengthy cases against someone I strongly believe to be scum."

#9 Player: Dr. Gonzo

Username for this game: DrGonzo25

Representing: Draft Countdown.

Started playing in: 2012.

Qualifications:
Dr. Gonzo received the most support in a public vote on Draft Countdown.

Dr. Gonzo first discovered mafia after serving almost two years in prison. He learned of mafia attending court mandated anger management classes. It had helped a friend of his channel all the negativity in his life. So Dr. Gonzo gave it a shot and he's now found a new addiction in life.

Bio:
"I am a relentless *******. Analytical, calculating, and ultra competitive I am of the opinion that winning is the only option. I plan on crushing all of you."

#10 Player: Glotnot

Username for this game: Glotnot

Representing: Neoseeker.

Started playing in: 2008.

Qualifications:
Glotnot is a veteran player on Neoseeker with many awards to his name:

2008 - Best Mafia, Best Mason, Most Prolific Player, Best Moderator, one of two Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductees
2009 - Best Town, Best Mafia, Most Prolific Player, Most Enjoyable Game
2010 - Best Individual Performance, Best Write-up
2011-2012 - Hiatus
2012/2013 Combined Awards - Funniest Player, tied for Favorite Player, Best Write-up, Best Original Role, Best Moderator, Most Enjoyable Game.

To provide an example of what type of player Glotnot is, he once convinced his scum team that they were in fact a pro-town group (when in reality they were a secondary scum group with no night kill), and that it only seemed like they were scum because that's how the theme was. That way he ensured that his team mates played it straight and didn't unintentionally give anything away. Also because they were convinced, they were able to convince the town about themselves when it came up. They won that game.

As for experience with other sites, Glotnot has also played about 25 games on the Grey Dog Software forums.

Bio:
"A strength, eh? Well cowboy, this ol' girl's seen some tricks in her day, and our tricks usually involve the Joker and an untargetable PGO investigator protector vigilante (damn skippy, sailor); if you think your little "cop" frivolities are gonna have much of an impact, you got another thing comin', buster brown. My approach is just as simple: anybody can win, but I'd rather fall - with STYLE, and when you play chicken with the ground, the ground ain't nothin' but a chump in sheep's clothing, hound dog.
- Arthur Dent"

#11 Player: HerbieGRD

Username for this game: HerbieGRD

Representing: Puzzles and Other Games.

Started playing in: 2006.

Qualifications:
HerbieGRD is an old school player who's been playing in Puzzles and Other Games since its very start in 2006. Since then, he's racked up an impressive 113 games as well as 63 games on BoardGameGeek.

This experience has paid off and he is widely regarded as one of the absolute best two-way players. There have been 3 drafts of the all-time best players in Puzzles and Other Games, and in all 3 of those he was drafted in the first round (out of a pool consisting of 1700+ players). In the most recent one that literally just finished a week ago, he was drafted 3rd overall, despite only playing a couple of games in 2013.

Bio:
"My style is to combine tone reads early with a more analytical evidence based style late. I try to be an extremely obvious villager regardless of my role, and to be awesome enough that the wolves would rather kill me than the seer/cop."

Username for this game: The John McClane

Representing: JetNation.

Started playing in: 2010.

Qualifications:
Integrity28 was recommended as the clear champion for JetNation by the previous representatives and other top players from Dragonmount, a site that shares much of its player base with JetNation.

Also, Integrity28 apparently invented rule #14: GFY.

Bio:
"I suck at this game. I don't take notes, I don't remember anything, I use the thread as a stream of consciousness... Or do I?"

#13 Player: Magicziggy

Username for this game: Magicziggy

Representing: MindRomp.

Started playing in: 2009.

Qualifications:
Trying to get the intelligent community of MindRomp to commit to a representative turned out to be quite ... Interesting and difficult. After a week of skating around the issue though, they finally agreed on offering up Magicziggy as their champion.

Magicziggy's peers refer to his reading abilities as "spooky".

Bio:
"I've played at multiple related fora and have been exposed to a wide spectra of game styles; from the fluffy bunny approach at RatSkep to the I Will Kill You With My Bare Hands And I'm Not Joking style that is Talk Rational. I am currently in my zen phase but that may pass.”

#14 Player: merk

Username for this game: merk_sa

Representing: Something Awful.

Started playing in: 2009.

Qualifications:
merk and Mills, the two representatives from the big mafia community of Something Awful, were both chosen through a public vote in which they received the most support.

merk is one of the more experienced players in the field, having played almost 170 games. Here is a list of his games.

Bio:
"I originally joined Something Awful mafia to improve my persuasive writing and argument-forming skills for law school. As an engineer, I felt like other kids had an advantage over me because I spent my education and then-career solving problems rather than forming arguments and convincing others of the same. Mafia truly improved my academic pursuits and my current professional career.

Regarding interesting strategies of mine: I will always vote for claimed non-Town players unless it is clear that doing so would be win-condition limiting in the very short term. I have many play styles because I like to switch it up as often as possible to evolve my game. In short, I'm constantly trying to find new ways to be persuasive."

#15 Player: Mills

Username for this game: Mills

Representing: Something Awful.

Started playing in: 2007.

Qualifications:
merk and Mills, the two representatives from the big mafia community of Something Awful, were both chosen through a public vote in which they received the most support.

A panel of Something Awful mafia players once collaborated to create a 'guide' to posting styles on their forums. Mills was judged to be the World's Only Heart Mafia Player because no one could definitively describe his content, his emotion, his game.

Bio:
"I'm sure I share the same strengths of many playing this particular game - a wealth of experience with a variety of different personalities. I'm sure most of us will also share the same weakness since few meta-reads will be available. I tend to scum-hunt by parsing posts for awkwardly constructed sentences that don't read as free-flowing; I find this the most enjoyable way to play."

#16 Player: monstrman

Username for this game: monstrman

Representing: Video Game Forums.

Started playing in: 2006.

Qualifications:
After consulting the Video Game Forums community both in private and in public, monstrman was named as one of the top dawgs.

monstrman has played about 50 games, including games on Comic Fury as well as Deus Ex Mafia, the latter of which he is also considered the champion of according to the site's creator.

Bio:
"My general approach to the game is to be as aggressive as possible no matter what. As town, I generally try my best to clear townies to PoE mafiats. I put more stock in reads than I do on night actions. Catching slips is secondary, but I use people's reads of each other to gauge where all the trust lies. As mafia, I try to emulate being town to the best of my ability, obviously. My greatest strength probably lies in more often than not getting people to lynch who I want lynched, though it isn't always a positive flip. I believe the town should lynch 99% of the time, save for mislylo."

#17 Player: Palmar

Username for this game: Palmar

Representing: Team Liquid.

Started playing in: 2011.

Qualifications:
A group of previous representatives and other top players on Team Liquid was first asked to give a list of names that were considered top tier. They were then asked to each rank the list of names collected, the result of which was Palmar as the number one choice.

He and Ace have also been said to be the maybe strongest pairing yet from Team Liquid.

As for awards, Palmar won Best Partnership and Most Impressive Newbie in 2011.

Also, Palmar is our first representative from Iceland.

Bio:
"Traditionally I am a very strong town player and a mediocre scum player. My greatest strengths in mafia is first and foremost a very strong day 1, and the ability to lead and influence towns. My play drops off in later days, and I spend too much time lynching people who were wrong on day 1 or do not agree with me. I tend to lynch everyone who calls me scum.

I am a big sucker for theatrics and drama, and I am often willing to take risks in order to do things I consider cool or fun, including claiming scum (as either alignment), talking to myself, faking a split personality and furiously denying having said what I said, random lynching, preparing epic speeches etc etc.

I also hold very strong values other players sometimes don't get. For one I am very much a believer in policy lynches. I also hold townies extremely responsible for getting lynched and I consider it a great failure on my part if I do end up getting lynched. I never make excuses for my absence, I do not condone lying and roleclaimers on day 1 get the lynch without discussion, no matter the situation.

First and foremost I try my best to be a very entertaining player. Mafia is about having fun."
