SPECTATOR CHAT

Hello dear spectators!

If you would like to spectate this game please add me on Skype and I will invite you to the spectator chat: thingyman

For season 1 we had more than 100 people from all the different communities spectating these games. It was a ton of fun and it even led to a bunch of crossover games between communities, so even if you're not that interested in actually discussing the games, it may be a great chance to do some networking. This whole thing is really mostly about building a cross-community bond, so please pop in and say hi.

Note that the spectator chat will NOT be spoiled.

Re: The 2015 Mafia Championship: Game 1

RULES
  • Only post / talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players. Don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums. Except for the mafia team. The mafia team can communicate with each other privately during the night phase and only the night phase.
  • Don't edit your posts. The idea is everybody gets to see the same information in the thread. You are allowed to link to images, videos, etc., but don't change them. Again, everybody gets the same information in the thread.
  • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating. As would discussing the time stamp of your PM.
  • When the thread is open and the moderator has announced DAY you can post in it. But only as long as you are a live player. No dead posts, please.
  • Vote by bolding a name. I repeat: You vote by simply bolding a player's name - no need for "Vote: X" or anything like that. To change votes just bold a different name, or unvote. Vote counts will show how much time remains in the day. Votes in the final minute (:00) of day will count. :01 votes won't be counted.
  • Breadcrumbing is allowed. Unbreakable codes or code links + private keys or any stuff resembling that is NOT allowed. So as an example, this is disallowed.
  • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
  • If we believe you to be intentionally angleshooting (bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rule and the game), then that would also be grounds for modkill. Do not try to get fancy or angly with the rules, please.
  • Changing your avatar or your location AFTER having received your role PM is NOT allowed.
  • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to this account. I'd be happy to help. You should not be asking the mod questions in the thread and neither should you ever refer to private communications with the mod.
  • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
And for completeness' sake, here is once again a link to the standard game rules for this forum.

Lynch rules
  • There is no majority lynch in this game except for at lylo (called must lynch on this site) for the sake of being able to keep the same schedule throughout the game. Whoever has the most votes at deadline will be lynched. Tie votes are explained below.
  • At lylo these rules will be in effect: Votes will be LOCKED IN. There will be no unvoting or vote changing, so make sure to vote wisely! At lylo day ends immediately once majority is reached - do not post once this happens even if the mod isn't around to call it.
  • No lynch is allowed.
Tie votes

In the event of a tie vote, there will be a sort of "coin flip" to determine the outcome. Specifically, post ID will be the determining factor (which guarantees a fair "flip"). Click here for an in depth explanation.

Re: The 2015 Mafia Championship: Game 1

TIPS TO MAKE THE FORUM EASIER TO USE

Sometimes you want to read a single player. Here are 2 ways to do it.

From the forum page, click the number next to the thread title (488 here). This brings up a window called "Who Posted". From there click the number next to a poster to see their posts in the search page.

OR From within the thread, click search this thread at the top, then advanced search.

This brings up a window where you can enter a poster name and / or keywords.

Here is a sample search result. Click the title within a post to go to that post.

Use my twoplustwo / Edit Options to change the look & feel of the forum.

There you may want to make yourself invisible. This means your name doesn't appear at the bottom of the forum page while you are reading. Almost all the regular players here use invisible.

Change your posts/page from the default 15 to a number that suits you.

Tell the forum your timezone.

Maybe try different colors.

Don't forget to click Save Changes.

---

You can use tapatalk. And there is also a twoplustwo app for phones that is like tapatalk.

---

Also note that each vote count has more info than just votes:
  • The number in (99) is how many times that player has posted.
  • You can click the names to go to the post with the vote.
  • It shows you how much time remains in the day.

---

Finally, for spectators from other forums... Register an account so you can set posts per page, colors / timezone, and use the phone app. It makes for much easier reading.

#1 Player: Bubbles

Username for this game: Bubbbles

Started playing in: 2012

Bio:
I strongly believe in logic and reasoning, but every once in a while you need to trust your gut instinct. I tend to get more involved with the game as it progresses, and by the last phase I'm playing my hardest.

#2 Player: CPHoya

Username for this game: CPHoya

Representing: Super Mafia All Stars

Started playing in: 2009

Bio:
Began playing forum werewolf on 2+2 in summer 2009. Kept playing through today. Began playing SUPER MAFIA ALL STARS ("SMAS"), with Ryuzilla's blessing, last year. Kept playing through today.

The good: Reliable first round draft pick in WW/mafia drafts. Always selected as dedicated "free win" wolf in anonymous games. Once voted best overall active player in POG. Extremely high wolf win frequency coupled with low mislynch frequency. According to SMAS $tats, undefeated mafia at perfect 6-0, with 5 of those wins being while still alive (and the one where I actually died being the game where TANAGOAT won it by crying).

The bad: Grating lawyer personality. Tendency to tunnel strong players when he believes the strong player has said something too stupid to be a real thought. Thinks that about most things anyone ever says. Reads can be erratic (with vanilla-game solves being very common, but vanilla-game details being a definite thing). Wants WW theory to be true all the time, which causes him to be more hesitant to lynch people who are barely trying, since to him that means the wolf is making no effort to win, which is unfathomable to Hoya. He's adjusting this.

The commitment: This will be a pen and paper, A-game effort. Will settle for nothing but outright MVP-caliber performance.

The quirk: Really, really likes cats.

I started playing mafia in mid-2012, and was promptly lynched Day 1 of my first game. Since then, I’ve played over 50 longer games and a couple hundred shorter one across six different sites, becoming a perennial Night 1 target on DLP in the process. I also play a fair amount of Resistance and Avalon with a games group, irl.

I tend to oscillate between periods of observation and periods of intense questioning. Reads wise, I work by a mixture of process of elimination, unaligned pairs and picking apart small details to form full-blown reads. Forming a comprehensive understanding of each player as an individual is of particular importance. Feels based reads are all well and good, but if I can’t understand why I'm reading someone a certain way, then I can’t learn from it and replicate it.

I believe in constant improvement, the value of logic above all else, and making the scumteam regret every Day they leave me alive.

Guild is a fantastic player who is somehow able to keep up with the 500 posts per day that the Mafia Championships game somehow generates. Once when he was a young lad he met a magic frog who offered him a kiss in exchange for magic powers. Guild accepted and now the frog can fly 1d4 squares per day. Guild will make a logo for every insignificant thing that happens in this game, and in fact, will only be communicating through said logos. Guild is the only person on Talking Time who is familiar with non-TT mafia metas. He's the only one of us crazy enough to accept this nomination, knowing full well what it means. So crazy in fact that he's accepting the nomination for the second time in a row.

PrivateJoker: well this is simply not true

Guild: When has that ever stopped me from asserting something?

PrivateJoker: I mean, Eden played in the last one, and wasn't even representing TT

Guild: I think PrivateJoker's Town!Guild arguments are strong, so I'll accuse Eden for now, but I'm watching you, PJ.

I've spent my whole mafia career (three years now? Four maybe?) in the PlayDiplomacy forums. In fact, I've only played forum mafia and not even participated in a live game since grade school. This means I tend to be detail focused (for good or for ill), and have a strong preference for analytical approaches versus tone. I like voting data. A lot. For me that means that spurious votes or people seeming to hold their votes too long are areas of concern. Of late my best moments have been in correct town reads versus mafia reads.

I am a teacher at a small private college. I teach computer applications, math and college success classes. I have a great husband and 4 children 25, 20, 11, and 4, as well as one grand son. We enjoy games of all kinds and help to run pirate events.I sew, read and sometimes drum and fire dance. It is a wonderful and busy life.

A friend of mine introduced me to Grey Labyrinth and Mafia about 4 years ago. I spent the first games totally confused, but i like a challenge and enjoyed the people. I am a pretty intuitive player and enjoy seeing how individuals react to different play styles. I am honored to have this opportunity to represent the oldest online mafia site. I hope I can keep up with the faster pace.

I'm not the best at introducing myself, so here are some quotes from other members of my Mafia community regarding me:

On competence: "Peerless analytic, excellent perception. Picks out very subtle mistakes and strategies."

On trickery: "Neil is deceptively contributory no matter his faction; he'll start helping either way. Whether it's true or not is the harder part."

On correctness: "Neil knows exactly what's going on, and is even pretty great at calling which games he's going to lose right from the get-go."

On authority: "He pretends he's the mod in some of the games he's playing, and then people believe him, so that's bad, but usually he's fine."

On frivolity: "Whenever he's not confused about if it's chess or mafia, he's really good at mafia."

On mood: "Ughhhh I had too much WIFOM last night, this hangover is truly horrendous."

In general: "Seriously, the based lord himself."

My first mafia game was in March 2011, a game I won and was considered MVP for my faction. These days I'm known for dying before Day 3 because my ability to sift through bull**** during massclaim situations is peerless, for like any true hero, my motivation is greatest when the hour is darkest.

I've never been mislynched on this site (and only once ever in my history of playing forumafia). I like to think I'm pretty openminded and unbiased when it comes to reading people.

I also enjoy long walks on the beach.

I have been playing mafia since June 2013, having played since the very first game on the FTB Forums. I have played the most games out of anyone on the FTB Forums, and I also play Town of Salem fairly regularly. I am a young Australian currently undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering and am also a member of my university's debating team. Throughout my years as a debater I have learned what is needed to convince a person of anything even if I don't believe it myself and have used it do my advantage in many games. I am also a risk taker, people do not win by sitting back and letting the game unfold before them.

Started playing in: 2012

Bio:
I have no idea when I started playing mafia, though my involvement with mafia happened years earlier than my first modded game (I modded games before I played my first one).

Before I got involved in a game, I used to just enjoy reading, and reading about people's games. The first game I read was Acmlm's Board "Mafia: The (somewhat) Logical Detective Game" and was blown away by the twist ending! I hadn't read anything like that before, and it got me hooked, I wanted to read more about people with bad roles pretending to be good and all that.

I then found the Mafia section on the xkcd forums, and it was full of interesting games full of interesting people, I wanted to one day mod a game for them, but I wanted to read all games on The Disc first. What a crazy idea! Years passed and I couldn't make any progress reading because it was just too much to read. But I had an idea for a setup, but I had no idea if it'd work, so I created it on the Acmlm's Kafuka Board and named it Mafia: The Pequel (my name was Traffic Light there), and it was a success, so Stark created another game afterwards on there, and I played my first game ever there, where I was lynched D1 because I was a Miller-Death Miller investigated by a cop, but that game died due to inactivity (everyone had powers and almost nobody sent a nit action.)

Afterwards I dedicated to mod games on other Acmlm Board based fora (Acmlm was a moddable board system such as phpBB), such as Neritic Net. And, after searching with google it seems all my mafia involved past has been wiped off the net, since the content can no longer be found and the one that is there produces errors and Google Cache doesn't work, oh well!

By Sep 18, 2012 I finally joined a game on the xkcd forums, though most of the userbase was different from the games I had read. I created Mafia: The Prequel Redux which reused the setup of my first game ever with tweaks, and by thith point I had modded much more games than I had played in, and it took me several months of playing games to catch up.

And the rest can be read on The Disc  - I tend to get frustrated and self-vote when I'm town and people don't believe me, with people claiming town won despite my poor play while I claim it was a calculated risk and voting for myself helped town win. I tend to play much better as scum.

Also, I have played as Serial Killer a disproportionate number of time. thith is because I tend to play as replacement in games, and most of the time, the player abandoning the game is scum, and most of the time, the scum player is Serial Killer. The same can be said about playing the Lover role, whenever there was a game around here with Lovers, I'd be one of them for some reason.

I'm a proponent of the "beer" strategy, which is what I call "town's wine", where the town players purposely lies to confuse scum players (i.e. doctor says they'll protect the cop, but they protect someone else, so scum attacks someone else, and doctor has more chance to save them.) I've had long discussions about "beer" in games, and usually it just gets me lynched because by then I'm a big distraction to town and it's better to just get rid of me to shut me up about it, but I've seen other players using "beer" with success (I didn't invent the term, but since I keep talking about it some people think I did).

When he's town, he is usually killed off early, and when he's mafia he tends to survive to the end of the game.

Re: The 2015 Mafia Championship: Game 1

CHAPTER 1: THE KUMITE

Today you have the MMA. You know, mixed martial arts. Or ultimate fighting as they used to call it.

But let me tell you, there was nothing more ultimate, nothing more mixed and most definitely nothing tougher than The Kumite.

Single-elimination freestyle fighting tournament.

Was it legal? Hell no. This was an underground event that took place once every five years. Supremely skilled martial artists were secretly invited from all around the world, representing a broad spectrum of different fighting styles. You had your usual suspects; You had your karate, kung fu, muay thai, your taekwondo, you had all that. Then you had the more exotic stuff, I'm talking krav maga, sumo wrestling, man, the list goes on. And you would see moves you'd never seen before.

The vibe in the air at this thing, man, I'm telling you, it was like nothing you'll ever experience elsewhere. Screw the Olympics, screw the world cups, screw all that. Life is blood and sweat and tears. And you haven't gotten a true glimpse of life if you haven't been to the Kumite. And chances are you haven't, unless you're a man with some shady ass connections. So let me tell you about it.

This is the story of those who didn't do it for fame or for money. The real martial artists. Those who did it for the glory.

This is a story of bloodsport.

Well, doesn't this look fun.

Guild for having apparently started playing Mafia from before I knew English. Whoever compiled these bios must have done some serious digging, for I don't remember telling Thingyman the year in which I started playing yet I think the year is still accurate. Or maybe my memory is simply terribly failing me.

Re: The 2015 Mafia Championship: Game 1

Welp, I've read the bios twice and the mountain of content the players have provided and have no reads, obviously. So I'll talk about what I found interesting about the bios? And then I'll make a simple request.

Re: the bios, I seem to have philosophical agreement with several of you, which makes me very happy. Erratic new players are way more frustrating than diligent new players.

There is a typo in mine, "details" should be "derails."

fontisian explains the game mostly the same way I do, and I expect our thoughts to mostly align based upon: "Reads wise, I work by a mixture of process of elimination, unaligned pairs" and "[f]eels based reads are all well and good, but if I can’t understand why I'm reading someone a certain way, then I can’t learn from it and replicate it." I'm looking forward to fontisian's game.

harb's focus on voting data is good and probably suggests a basically analytical approach all the time, meaning his content will ramp up over time.

itisally's bio is part of my specific motivation for this post, since it seems that generating content for her to react to is going to be very important in trying to read her.

the parts of neil's bio relating to "competence" and "trickery" are completely in line with how I think of my own game, so he too will be analyzed somewhat under that template (i.e., the template of "this guy shouldn't be this hard to work with without a strongly persuasive reason"). I'm excited about his game. I also like his avatar.

I dislike paperblade's avatar and note that mass claim mastery is ~ worthless in this setup, Doesn't mean paperblade won't be awesome but it does mean I have no idea what paperblade is trying to tell us to expect.

I expect darkestlight to put an emphasis on live interaction, which relates to my upcoming request.

VikeStep clearly understands wolfing, and is perhaps the only other person I've ever heard explain wolfing in precisely this way (though I've heard agreement with the concept endless times): " Throughout my years as a debater I have learned what is needed to convince a person of anything even if I don't believe it myself and have used it do my advantage in many games."

Vytron seems like a very erratic villager, given that self-voting and FPS (Fancy Play Syndrome) are the only tactic-relevant points he made. This gives me the bad vibes.

Re: my request:

I know it's super early in this game, but I've noticed that a lot of other sites tend to post way, way less than I'm used to, and there are 4 posts at the time I'm writing this. That's not okay. The problem is that means there is less live interaction. That means that on each subsequent day there is less information to use to solve the game. This, therefore, favors the wolves. During the last Champions series the wolves romped, and they will again if we aren't posting.

So, my request: please post as much as you can and interact with as many people as you can. I'm writing this large, basically role-neutral about everyone post because there appears to otherwise be nothing to talk about.

Find things to talk about.

Totally agree we should get right into this. I'll start: I don't believe you felt that randomly voting someone whom you by definition do not even know is "getting right into" anything at all, or that it would meaningfully increase the detail available to pay attention to before you decided to be decisive.

This is thin.

Guild, sup bro. In your opinion, why is it wolf-y to vote you randomly? Is it worse than TDL's random vote?

Not defending either one, both are obviously pointless.

Guild for having apparently started playing Mafia from before I knew English. Or maybe my memory is simply terribly failing me.
Selecting the elderly for elimination? There's some animal that hunts like that... Goes around in packs, likes to howl... I'll remember later.

So (and tell me if I'm wrong), not a serious vote. What's the goal of it? You clearly read the bios, CPHoya made a good showing of finding something serious to talk about from that. Why the frivolous start?

Re: The 2015 Mafia Championship: Game 1

Let's talk mechanics a bit.

Either everyone should claim a seer/cop check with their target, or no one should claim it. I lean towards the latter, as any vanilla town who claims to have checked a scum as town will be eliminated from the possible cop pool, making it easier for scum to take out the cop early on. At the very least, if we do decide to have everyone make a claim, I think we should wait until the end of the Day to make claims, so they do not factor into the scum's Day 1 voting decisions.

That said, I'm the cop. Come at me.

CHoya: I suspect I'll disappoint you, but thank you. I've actually been watching some of your games (both to research you and because they're enjoyable). You have a lovely cat.

Serious vote. Hoya dissecting The Darkest Light's vote makes sense as TheDarkestLight expressed an interest in moving the game forward without actually doing it. Harb then took that as a cue to question another random vote, one without the inherent contradiction.

I don't think it's binary like that, a blend works fine too, especially when no one knows anyone. However, each individual player should consider whether they intend to leave a peek or fake peek, or not, and do whatever they've decided to do because they think it's the best play for the village.

Prob a good point about saving for later so the wagons aren't based on it.

I don't like this. Not that I find it suspicious, but I think it's a bad idea. I understand the idea behind it, but there's too much potential for information leakage. If Guild ISN'T the cop for example, and develops a scum read on TDL, how does he pursue that without giving up the fact that he's not the cop?

CP, why react to the rest of Guild's post and not this? It's either a bad idea or a good idea in your mind. Seems like either way you should be saying something.

I have no problem with fake peeks and I see no benefit to harassing him about his seer cover. I also see what you're saying. Perhaps it would help you to know that seer cover in the form of fake peeks is completely standard in POG.

Also my previous post that x-posted with your post is about this.

That contradiction isn't the only potential problem with that random vote.
