Maybe William L. Armstrong...served for 12 years, died at 79 last July (born 1937).

George Voinovich & Fred Thompson also qualify (except I primarily know Fred Thompson from being an actor, but the question doesn't say "primarily famous").

Good phrasing, as it includes other elected offices besides Senator he may have been holding when he died (JFK comes to mind).

Nope. 12 years & 10 months. That's why I missed him the first time.

The rest of the list I believe is:

Joseph McCarthy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_McCarthy

Winston L. Prouty
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_L._Prouty

On a side note, based on my research, Republicans may be surreptitiously murdering 2nd term Democratic senators.

Same difference

I slept about 2 hours last night (sick baby).

Don't trust anything I say, except the answer is probably Joseph McCarthy.
