The hint I gave about an avatar was to get you to just think about US College football in general (Acirt’s Iowa State sports logo), and then be surprised later that the avatar was leading way more directly to the actual person.

As Acirt noted, Jack Trice's story is a sad one. He was trampled (reportedly) by three opposing players in an Iowa/Minnesota football game and died a couple of days later due to his injuries. He was African American and it was felt that attack on the field was racially motivated. In fact, Iowa would not play Minnesota again for 66 years because of the attack.

Jack Trice is said to be the only African-American person with a D1 College Stadium named after him, so he is not an obscure person.

I came across the story about Jack Trice while watching a Smithsonian Channel 1 hour show on the State of Iowa. I think they have a one hour show on every state. I thought he would be a good 20Q person.

That Acirt stumbled into this thread was kind of erie... There must be over 100 D1 teams and Acirt pops in with the logo....lol

Not a guess, but looking at things that fit, especially with some context, I'm thinking Ricky Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band's Garden Party

Looks like this reached #6 on the hot 100, so that's out.

Also, when I was thinking about the hot 100 I was thinking of year end charts, but I just now realised that it could be any one of 52 weeks of the year lol.

Would asking if the song was off a debut album by the artist be helpful or a wasted question?

I'm not really sure what is a good question to ask, but I feel like we need to pick a path and stick to it so that we have a list that is easily searchable. Debut album question is unlikely to help much unless the answer is yes imo.

Yeah, I agree

We could narrow down release month?

As long as something that is easy to search, then sure.

Maybe a Neil Young song....

Released in April or May of 1972?

I don't think trying to get closer here will help. In fact, there is often not reliable information available about exactly when songs were released from this era.
Plus it will be ambiguous about when the single was released or when the album it was on was released.

No Neil Young songs qualify already. Heart Of Gold reached #1, Old Man only #31.
