All I can think of is a decanter, but that just doesn't seem right.

Not Metal or wood = likely plastic.

Not found in kitchen but used for eating/cooking is strange.

It's a cheap plastic thing.

Hmm.
Vindicated!

What do you guys think about my suggestion of something like a fruit bowl or candy dish? The only thing that doesn't fit to me is that I wouldn't think those things would likely have writing on them, but I guess a few could.

The newest clarification implies that it is related to drinking, not food.

I'm guessing something alcohol related, but everything I can think of is close but not quite...decanter, coasters, wine glasses. No idea what it could be.

Red Solo Cup?

Edit: Nah that's also in the kitchen

This is too hard.

It has to (at least sometimes) have writing or use electricity in a way that is essential to its purpose.

Fondue set comes close, but misses a couple of elements.

Where is this?

Found it, he added drinking, meaning he would have answered yes if it were for drinking. That doesn't necessarily imply it is used for drinking.

Yeah this is an L.

0. Thing
1. It is not bigger than a breadbox.
2. It is not alive.
3. It is not unique. - means it's a mass produced item.
4. It does not emit a sound, emit light, nor is it notably odorous - Probably our best question. No sound or light and doesn't smell.
5. It is not typically primarily composed of metal or wood. - 2nd best question, it must be plastic.
6. It would be found in most American households.
7. It is not edible.
8. It is not most commonly found in the kitchen. - This is very relevant, almost everything I can think of that fits the rest of the narrative fails this.
9. It either sometimes has writing on it or uses electricity in a way that's essential to its purpose. - Could be a red herring depending on which qualifier is true.
10. It is likelier than not that filthy has one of these in his car or apartment.
11. If I saw a friend on the street holding one of these, it would be unusual enough that you would ask him about it.
12. Can buy one for under $50. - It's cheap so it's nothing technical.
13. It would be appropriate to give as a gift in office secret Santa.
13a. Should be read as: It would not be considered inappropriate to give as a gift in an office secret Santa.
14. It is sometimes made (at least in part) of ceramic or glass.
15. Home Depot would not be an obvious place to look for one of these.
16. It is used for hygiene, or health care, or eating or cooking.
17. You would not usually touch it every day. - It isn't an every day hygiene item.
18. You would not expect to find one in a hotel room*.
19. It is not related to hygiene or health care. - This implies that it has to do with eating or cooking, but also isn't something found in the kitchen.

Clarification on Q9:

"It either sometimes has writing on it or uses electricity in a way that's essential to its purpose."

Is "in a way that's essential to its purpose" modifying only the electricity or does it also apply to the writing part?

I had been assuming it was the latter the whole time, but now I'm not sure.

Clearly coaster does not fit if the writing is essential to the purpose.

Way too many of these questions are vague as ****. I feel bad for IRTM for having to Ouija board an answer to them.
