Alright, hint: the city is so insignificant that you almost have almost certainly never heard of it, even if you live in the state (or region, if the city is outside the US) it's in.

Well looks like we're f'ed then. But I don't get the equivocation bolded here, since an answer already specified a "US city or state".

The only real things to go on are the earlier free hints, if they can be understood logically as I see it:

The band has to have a separate wikipedia entry for their discography.

The date given for the single on that page is sometime 1980 or later, but the song was actually released in the 1970s.

It could be the name of both a US state & a foreign city based on the wording of the questions.

For example, Alabama...

Quote:
There is one place named Alabama in South Africa.

There is one place named Alabama in America.

There is one place named Alabama in Belize.

It doesn't even have to be that complicated.

Based on the way we asked our questions, we left a lot of unintended ambiguity.

Quote:
13. The band's name contains an US city or state.
A U.S. City, or any state name. US State, or foreign state.

Quote:
14. The band's name contains a city name.
Could be any city in the world, we didn't specify US city.

OK, so it could have the name of a US state other than Kansas. But it could just as easily include a random word that is the name of an obscure US town that no one here has heard of. Doesn't really give much to go on.

But anyway, I feel like I'm about useless here. I blew my load on Kansas.

I'm just here for moral support at this point.

Go team go!

But the possibility of it being the name of a foreign state should be ruled out by the later hint that even people living there probably wouldn't have heard of it.

That would be a super sketchy way to parse that sentence, & I don't think UD would do that. Probably a moot point anyway.

Excellent point.

Ugh. I wouldn't have wasted so many questions on the place name if I had thought this was a possibility.

I hope the band name is directly related to the city (e.g. the band is from there). It would be technically correct if not, but against the spirit of the question.

Like if the song was Happy Together, I would have given a hard no for "does the band's name contain a US place name" even though Turtle, Wisconsin is a thing.

I would have answered that with a yes, because the band name does contain a city name.

Regardless, since this confused so many people, I will give two extra questions, but I am still pretty sure I have answered the question as I should have.

On the bright side at least it's not Kansas, Chicago or one of those other wank AM bands.

another option:

LA Guns (one of the two bands that merged into Guns N Roses).

I thought of LA Guns earlier, but they didn't even form until 1983. This is a song from the 70s.

Also the city/town is "insignificant" and it's likely that none of us have ever heard of it.

We should just get the city thing out of our heads.

Does anyone think we should not go with either of my two conjectures here based on the "hints" given?

Song did not chart top 100, band is not in Rock & Roll hall of fame. So what is the notability? Maybe it's in a genre that is sort of rock, but wouldn't normally be included in the HOF. Or maybe it's a theme song or something like that.

Possibly could ask if the song was nominated for a Grammy, or from an album that charted high. WIth so few questions left probably gotta go for a hail mary

Yeah another conjecture is that it's a song that is just a "type of rock" so that maybe some people wouldn't call it rock. That's why I thought Miami Sound Machine was a likely winner.

also possibly the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, though nothing particularly seems to fit there

Heh, I love The Manhattan Transfer, but I would never, under any circumstances, refer to their music as a kind of rock. Don't know about the others.
