This is identical to the proverbs game (I think) where Euro was caught but didn't lolcat until 15 or so minutes to go. It's his thing.

now I think he quite likely isn't

I'm finding his admission of Forsy being a wolf looking terrible for him and his attempt at self-sacrifice to be very villagery. He doesn't strike me as the type to do something gimmicky like that as a wolf, and he'd have to be like a vanilla wolf protecting a wolf PR for it to be feasible imo, and even then I dunno if he'd go about it the way he has.
