I like filthy's take on the drugs thing. Certainly against the spirit of the game, but these parameters are so poorly defined, so I approve

I don't see how you'd go without the phone or internet. 10 years without any communication would be so so bad.

Calling any definition of this "pretty clear" is stretching the truth a bit.

well even if that's the case. you can still be wildly wealthy from UNLIMITED booze. 10 million is chump change compared to unlimited booze.

buy the doctor, go into a coma and wake up rich. otherwise i would go insane, even if i had everything on the page. i couldn't handle 10 years in a basement.

2 points for a green house is a bargain though. you would treasure that extra space. and green house implies sunlight to me.

the only better bargain is 6 points for the kitchen. that is basically a must(unless you get the coma)

i used to love reading. but i no longer have the patience. i get especially annoyed at all the irrelevant **** that every single writer puts in their books.

although... thinking about it now i guess it does seem pretty silly that i'd rather read pog pub than the world's great authors

also with unlimited booze, depending on how it was delivered, you might be able to supply the world energy with hydro power.

you might be able to do this on the moon or other planets and have outposts with unlimited power

The first thing you must recognize is to grab the 40 points and forget about the money. If you pull this off, you are worth a lot more that 10M and those 10 points extra are HUGE.

So this is very easy. Take the computer+Internet+HD camera for 25 points and in 10 years you will be rich by blogging and stuff
For the 15 points that remain I'd take the kitchen, the TV (passive entertainment) and the doctor.

Why am I even at university when I can just make over a million per year blogging from my basement.

I assume you can only take drugs and alcohol for personal use.

Anyone doing this for 30 points is not thinking this through. When you get out, people will jump on you for advertising, movies, talkshows and stuff and you do not need those 10M at all. You will be a walking celebrity/rarity

The U.S. beverage alcohol industry is a major contributor to the economy, responsible for over $400 billion in total U.S. economic activity in 2010
so globally that's what, like a trillion a year? or maybe i should just blog and get rich that way

I'm assuming the "unlimited" for alcohol/drugs is for consumed use. If it's just the ability to take as much alcohol/drug from the world, you as an individual lack the means to distribute large quantities of alcohol/drugs around the world. While also I see there being no way the sponsor of said experiment would store infinite amounts of alcohol so as to allow you to sell it after you leave the basement.

i understand wanting to play the game a certain way and accepting that you can't sell the alcohol or drugs.

but you have access to a doctor if you want. and you could give him drugs and alcohol to sell for you

Then you must operate on the assumption the doctor is actually going to give you the money once your allotted time in the basement is over.

This seems like a strange assumption. The world is full of people locked up for 10+ years and no one cares about them when they get out.

I could see giving up half of the money for more points since 5M is still enough to live off of nicely, but giving up all of it seems pretty foolish. Unless of course you're good at web design and marketing, in which case the girl and video camera and internet could give you 10 years of steady income.

if the library will contain every book that has ever been published then presumably it will contain myriad lost books that would be priceless in the real world today, for instance we would now have access to all the lost treasures of the Library of Alexandria

so as long as we take the library and some other means of recording what we find, like the computer, then i think it's safe to use the 40 points for $0 knowing that we're gonna get paid more than that later on

good point moocher. you could also get books published on other planets. those could potentially be very valuable and useful

I love all the people looking for potential loopholes in stuff.

I can take all the drugs in the world then sell them!

Haha yeah true.

Then again the angleshoot is almost built into this thing with the "you get money up front / stock market" option. Whoever created that graphic appears to be outright condoning exploitation.

ETA: More evidence of this is the 40 points / $0 payout. Obviously no one is going to select this option if there's nothing to be monetarily gained from spending 10 years in a basement.

i thought the $0 option was because some people WOULD do it just for the pleasure of doing it
