Wednesday Extra: Sheldon Adelson has bashed online poker again, this time in a Forbes op-ed HERE. Let's all go to the article and post our thoughts!

My comment to Sheldon Adelson (http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenbe.../923-4365-1827):

It seems that, despite his claims to the contrary, Mr. Adelson does seek to restrict competition. He does not wish to compete with others in the online space, and he wishes to deprive consumers of having that option.

He says himself that many wish to play online, and he is absolutely right about that. America's poker players are united and organized in demanding this, in fact! The Poker Players Alliance has over one million members and lobbies every day for poker.

Where he's disgustingly wrong is when he claims that the popularity of online poker is due to addiction when, in fact, poker is hugely popular because it's a fun, competitive game that is perfectly suited to the Internet.

He's also wrong on the business aspects. Online poker is actually a great way for B&M casinos to market their properties. Rather than being cannibalistic, it would be complementary. We saw a HUGE boom in online poker in the last decade that was nothing but beneficial to B&M casinos. Imagine how much more so it would be for them if they ran the sites.

Times are changing Mr. Adelson. It's time for you and your corporation to move forward or be left behind.

Title: U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein responding to your message

Dear Bernie:

Thank you for writing to express your support for the "Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act" (H.R. 1174). I respect your opinion on this matter, and I welcome the opportunity to share my point of view.

On March 17, 2011, Representative John Campbell (R-CA) introduced the "Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act," which would legalize additional types of Internet gambling, including online poker, and establish a system for regulation. This bill has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit. To date, companion legislation has not been introduced in the United States Senate.

Although I recognize that you support the "Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act," I have generally opposed legislation that would expand Internet gambling. In my view, Internet gambling has become too easily accessible to minors, subject to fraud and criminal misuse, and too easily used as a tool to evade state gambling laws.

Again, thank you for your letter. Although we may have different perspectives on this particular issue, I appreciate hearing from you and will be mindful of your thoughts as the debate continues. If you have any additional comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. staff at (202) 224-3841.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
