ABC news just put up a story: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/phil-...ry?id=13831095

Looks mostly like a summary of recent events, but this article was probably put together because of participation in the "fight for your rights daily action plan". Let's keep it up!

Add Senator Chris Coons to the neutral-to-slightly-negative category.

Quote:
Dear Mr. TiltingDude:

Thank you for contacting me about regulating Internet poker in the United States. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me on this issue.

I know that Delawareans, like all Americans, have felt the effects of the current economic climate. Innovative ideas to spur economic growth and job creation should be given thorough review. Economic recovery will depend on our ability to develop new sectors of our economy to thrive and prosper. Efforts to increase the scope of gaming in the United States, however, need to be considered carefully. We must be cautious to ensure that any legislation also contains effective provisions to limit dangerous and harmful side effects, such as increased underage or addictive gambling. It is also important to consider the possible repercussions legalizing and regulating online gambling could have on our in-state casinos. I will be certain to keep your support for licensing online poker in the United States in mind as this debate continues in Congress.

I am honored to represent Delaware in the United States Senate, and I truly value hearing from Delawareans on issues of importance. I hope you will continue to share your views with me throughout my term in the 112th Congress.

Sincerely,
Christopher A. Coons
United States Senator

Thank You emails to Representatives Campbell, Frank and Barton is a great idea. A handful of these may get them to go just a little further in our behalf.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Looking at the various FB pages that poker players are currently owning, I think it's important to remember: we want our posts to be intelligent, courteous and concise. I'm seeing way too may ALL CAPS and ANGRY!!!!! posts that make us look like a bunch of petulant children.

Obviously I'm not suggesting that any of this is coming from us, but I think it's worth mentioning.

I think that could have an impact. The billboard might have a picture of many smiling men and woman PPA members and might say something like:

We the PPA believe the following regarding US poker regulation:

1) absolute honesty, and visibility in our sport

2) strict age enforcement policy

3) at least 2 members of the PPA on any gaming regulatory body.

4) substantial resources spent on sensible gaming education.

5) Poker would be a good source of much needed income for our government.

6) More charity tournaments (like ante up for Darfur)

7) The time had come for the All American game to be regulated.

8) Let's do it.

Then you can send a picture of the billboard to all media outlets and tell them where the billboard is located. They then might place the picture of the billboard on the cover of their papers or magazines and do a big story on it. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Whoops, #7 above should read "The time has come"...

Also I think the PPA needs a Public face celebrity as an ambassador. My God, if someone like Matt Damon or Leonaro DiCaprio ever got on board as an ambassador it would have a tremdous effect. These guys probably want online poker as much as anyone.

Engineer (or anyone else), if you happen to run into any celebrities at the WSOP you might bring this up.

Let's continue contacting mainstream media to ask them to increase coverage of our issue. Let's contact CBS News today. As they have been critical in the past, especially on 60 Minutes, let's mention specifically that we support the right to play.

Contact info:
Recurring actions:

Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.):
  • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
  • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)
  • The Dept. of Justice's page is here.
  • Senators' FB pages: Senator Facebook Listing
  • We need lots of posts on the issue of poker and lots of "liking" of pro-poker comments.
Let's all send the PPA pre-written letters to our lawmakers. These will be updated when Rep. Barton's poker bill is introduced to the House (in other words, soon), so let's all get the current letters out before that. Once done, please reply ITT with "done", "sent", etc. to encourage others. Thanks!

I created a short URL for this thread that should help with sharing: http://******/takeaction

Click Buttons to Send Letters in less than 60 seconds:

Finally, let's recruit others. Our personal recommendations of this effort will go far. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested. Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan.

Thanks!

What are the figures being touteed for a US regulated Ipoker site...ie taxation and job creation? I was having a discusion at work and would like to give some figures without sounding like i'm talking out my ***. I have heard 42 billion in revenue over 10 years and 100k jobs. Is that a "true" figure? or at least one that has been discussed. If so, where do these figures come from?

DrewOnTilt started a topic about that question a while back. I don't know if you saw it or not, but there are a few links in there that might help answer the question for you.

The DOJ is trying to bury the poker-related posts on its wall by posting random videos/links. It's actually pretty funny. Let's keep up the posting on their wall!

I'm salivating at the thought of a 60 minutes piece on this. Althuogh I'm sure it remains super unlikely, if it happens I bet they would do a good job, they provide the actual real service of quality journalism, unlike 98% of the other hacks on TV

I'd like to see a piece on the WTO and how other nations feel about what the US is doing. We have been violating WTO rulings consistently in this area, and I've never seen anything on it.

Response from Senator Roberts, KS.

In 2006, Congress passed and the president signed into law (P.L. 109-347) the SAFE Port Act to enhance security at our nation’s ports. I supported the SAFE Port Act because it is central to the protection of America’s busiest ports. Provisions to curb online gambling in the United States were included in P.L. 109-347 due to concerns that terrorists and organized criminals could use gambling websites as a means to launder money. The law bans receipt of checks, credit card charges, and other electronic funds transfers for Internet gambling.

Over the past two years, a number of bills were introduced in the House and Senate to permit online gambling licenses and to regulate and tax Internet gambling. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, I appreciate your concerns. None of the bills addressing this matter came before the Finance Committee or the full Senate before Congress adjourned last year. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should this issue come before the Senate this year.

Again thank you for taking the time to contact me. If you would like more information on issues before the Senate, please visit my website at http://roberts.senate.gov. You may also sign up on my home page for a monthly electronic newsletter that will provide additional updates on my work for Kansas.

With every best wish,

Sincerely,

Pat Roberts

I was somewhat surprised a Kansas senator might consider a poker bill after voting on the UIGEA>

I had to use a walker but I got there. I think the walker plus my grey beard added a nice touch esp. considering Barletta represents an aging district.

I stayed only a few minutes in Congressman Barletta office. I explained my annoyance with the federal government attempting to prevent me from playing poker on my computer in my house. The one aide agreed that it was none of the government business.

I also mentioned that the nanny left, ie. Senator Boxer, was anti internet poker. Very few citizens of Barletta district would identify with Boxer. I used the tax revenue figure of 42 B over ten years.

The aide's response together with no return emails from Barletta in response to my pro internet poker letters leaves Barletta a big ?, IMHO. Barletta is a first term Republican seeking re-election in a little bit left of center district that has voted Dems to the house 23 out of the last 25 house elections. He should be approachable on this issue.

In one of his failed run for congress, he was supported by the religious right.
