Fight for Poker Rights: Weekend of June 4th:

The newly updated state level PPA pre-written letter is up. As any federal bill with contain some mechanism to permit states not to participate if they don't wish, it's up to all of us to demand that they do!

So, let's all send this letter, plus send the other two if you've not yet done so. Again, these will be updated when Rep. Barton's poker bill is introduced to the House (in other words, soon), so let's all get these new letters out.

Take Action Now and Contact your Lawmaker

Click Buttons to Send Letters in less than 60 seconds:

Also, please encourage friends, relatives, coworkers, your significant other, fellow posters, coworkers, and anyone else you can find to join us in sending these letters to their lawmakers!

Once done, please reply ITT with "done", "sent", etc. to encourage others.

Recurring actions we can take:
  • Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.):
    • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
    • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)
    • The Dept. of Justice's page is here.
    • Senators' FB pages: Senator Facebook Listing
    • We need lots of posts on the issue of poker and lots of "liking" of pro-poker comments.
Thanks!

We got a good article out of Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2011/0...tdown/#content though I think that a follow-up article on how casual players have been affected would be even better.

I just emailed them this. It would be awesome for everybody else to do the same!

Subject: Great article "Families Face Dire Straits After Online Poker Shutdown"

Congratulations on a good article about how the government crackdown on Internet poker has negatively affected some people ("Families Face Dire Straits After Online Poker Shutdown,” June 4 2011, http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2011/0...tdown/#content). As can plainly be seen in the Comments section, the issue is one that has generated a considerable amount of debate on both sides.

I encourage you to do an additional story on how the poker crackdown has affected casual, non-professional poker players. While Brian Mogelefsky (the subject of the article) has certainly been negatively affected, he represents only a small percentage of poker players, as only a small percentage of players make poker their living. There are millions more players like me, who simply enjoy the challenge of a game of cards. I am upset that the government has intruded on my life by shutting me out of one of my favorite hobbies.

Many of the Fox News newscasters and commentators espouse “small government” views. That applies here! It is the role of the government to protect my rights to life, liberty, and happiness. It is not the role of the government to protect me from myself. Furthermore, I have heard of many cases of wounded veterans, homebound people, and those who do not live anywhere near a casino have now had their favorite pastime taken away from them. We are upset over this issue, and we feel that to legislate morality is to start down a very dangerous path.

Please do a follow up. Once again, congratulations on a great story.

I really think we need to start concentrating on the erosion of our freedom and liberty and it's possible effects on other American freedoms in the future. If we're ever gonna get through to the casual reader who may be undecided they need to see that todays poker could be tomorrows gun ban or other civil liberties. That there will always be some ppl who oppose something but that just banning it because you or I don't agree disgraces and shames all those who fought the revolution and all the soldiers who fought and died on the battlefield to preserve our freedom of choice and civil liberties. Stories like these are what will win over people who don't play poker. Also highlighting regulations effect on our economy with taxxable income and jobs should be highlighted as well.

If we are to win over congress we need to focus on winning over those who don't have an opinion one way or the other to our side. Those voices will only strengthen us imo. Just my two cents anyways.

Here's the list of members on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce;

With the Republicans, the top two are for, then the next 12 are against.

With the Democrats, only two of the top 8 are against, but that includes the leader, Henry Waxman.

Sent, and I think I've done every task since this thread started.

I don't care what negative things people say about the impact of all of this; it doesn't take long to do these things, and I plan to keep at it indefinitely. Let's keep this going.

Fight for Poker Rights: Monday, June 6th:

Let's turn this into a broader grassroots effort! Today's action is to ask five people to participate in the daily action plan. You can PM fellow poker players here, email friends, ask friends at the local B&M or home game, etc, but let's all put our personal recommendation into this effort. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested.

Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan. Thanks!!

Recurring actions:

Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.):
  • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
  • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)

I've just made a post about the "Action Plan" to my 50ish member forum - none of whom are active in the PPA (though most are members)...

I plan on sending a tagged facebook note out later today about this forum - and will send emails to anyone those posts don't cover...

I've sent an email to 5 friends. Used all 3 links to the PPA letter forms to send off letters to sens, reps, president, etc.

The standard PPA form has us sending letters to our 2 senators and one rep. Is there any benefit to sending letters to other reps in our state not in our district, or even other reps and sens in other states? Also, how often is optimal to resend letters; once a month?

I have just posted a "please help" thread on my drumline forum of 3200+ members, complete with links to the prewritten PPA emails. I think most of the members there like me, so hopefully a decent number will click through and complete the actions.

It's best just to write to your own lawmakers. I recommend a monthly frequency for the emails, but please follow up with phone calls and office visits as well.

Thanks!
