SSI and Jackpots!! SSI and Jackpots!!

SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income. Social Security administers this program. They pay monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older.

I qualify, the catch is, we cannot have over $2000 worth of assets, valuables, money. So I saved up the Max, I play 40nl, the thing is I'm afraid to hit a jackpot. I already won two jackpots before I was on SSI, and the other times I been there, I been extremely close to hitting it. I am afraid to win because my SSI would count that as income and I might get dropped from SSI. It's so hard to work with them, paper work gets lost, they are behind and I think me winning money would not help me at all.

I met a ton off people who get SSI in the casinos, I just never asked them what to do if they win. I heard one guy say he claims losses. So my question is should I quit and come back if I ever get out of SSI?

I'm pretty sure you could decline to take the jackpot money if you won a share. They would need your ID to even know who you are and report the jackpot to the government. Just don't give them your ID, say you don't want it, and walk away.

As chillrob said, I can't imagine a situation in which you would be forced to take the money. So just pass on it if that's what's best for you financially. BTW, Poker Legislation is the best forum for tax advice so I'll move this over there.

So I guess its best not to go. I think a good reason to be there is for the jackpot, but hey I will have to find something else to do. This sucks, if I win a years worth of money to pay my bills, then SSI wont reopen my case for another 2 years, and that is if they let me back in. Not worth it.

I read your comment, but who walks away from lets say 100k jackpot, even a 5k jackpot? then whats the point of playing if anything I win, I have to report to SSI? The times I been there I broke even, but what happens when I win? I know, SSI will cut my off.

Don't plan to be on SSI all my life.

If the only reason you are there is to hit a jackpot then you shouldn't be going there anyway, so win/win.

But even if I don't win a jackpot, whatever money I win gambling I have to report, which gets deducted from my SSI. So its not even a win/win situation because what I win gets deducted. I need to win something high to make it worth my time. I don't understand how the other people on SSI live in the casino. They can't win technically because they get deducted.

Well that makes sense, but it's a totally different point than what you asked about to begin with.

Yeah I just realized I can't win, I have to report whatever I win. If I win too much they can cut my SSI, and it is extreme hard to get it back. All the people in my life that I met, who get SSI, and gamble; I wonder if they report their winnings. I am thinking they are probably losing players who stretch it out.

You are being naive if you think that they are reporting small daily winnings.
