Christ for now I'd take crappy software, one table limit hold em with no HUD, no VIP program, but the Moneymaker era fishpond where I can freely move my money around out in the open.

(maybe not that much but yeah, please...)

Ok lets just say something passes. Someone please educate me. Im from CA, would we likely opt out? And if we do does that mean I'm basically S.O.L. when it comes to online poker until our state sets something up?

Wait, isn't that how we got into this situation in the first place?

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP! The UIGEA was dropped on our doorsteps by the stork. No idea what you're inferring with your statement

that's NOT how we play politics

I'll add my "one time" here as well.

Props to the PPA. I was really wondering what was up with TE and some of the others using this vaguely optimistic language about a federal bill. Nice to see this!

Is this a good idea? How does everyone feel about this? Especially GOP senators?

It could be counterproductive at this point. No?

We don't even have a bill # for Reid's bill for our congresspeople to support.
If Reid is planing on slipping in at the last second (which may appear shady) it may not be something we want to draw the attention of lawmakers who weren't involved those negotiations. If it's a good bill we sort of want it to pass under the radar without a lot of debate on the subject or we risk the 'attachment" being pulled in order to pass the main bill.

Edit: I also wonder how this will play out in the House if Reid does attach his poker bill in the Senate

From this article, dated Dec 2, it looks like they are running with Franks bill HR267. See here: http://www.osga.com/artman/publish/article_8547.shtml

There is going to be a tax cut vote on SAT- think this could move that quickly?

Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Senate plans to vote Dec. 4 on two Democratic proposals to extend Bush-era income-tax cuts, Majority Leader Harry Reid said tonight.

Reid of Nevada said he decided to schedule the votes after a Republican senator objected to a plan to hold votes tomorrow on two Democratic and two Republican tax-cut extension proposals.

I'd like to send them an email but it would not be of the pleasant kind.

I think it would pass the (current lame duck) house with Reid and Frank (and Paul maybe?) pushing it fairly easy. Remember there is no filibuster there.

AFter the GOP takes power, it will never pass the house.

There's plenty of inaccurate info in that first link that I question if the author has a full and accurate understanding of the situation.

Also the Senate vote on Dec. 4 are expected to fail and is just posturing by the Dems. If the tax-cuts are extended it will done by backroom deals by the leaders of both party's and the Pres.

Where are we?

Does anybody know what the current bill has to say about unlicensed sites? I know that it would require licensed sites to not allow players from prohibited states, but what effect would it have on the unlicensed sites like some of the current ones?

My biggest concern in the House is Pelosi and some other key Dems not wanting this as well as many GOP members who might see this as a Hairy Reid "entitlement". With all the talk of entitlement reform and getting rid of hidden attachments and fully debating legislation (yeah right) the GOP and some dems may not go for this in an effort to appeal to their base in lite of the recent election B.S.

I think they want in ahead of NJ.

This is one issues with this type of bill, we don't know what's in it. Few seem to have seen it or know what changes are being made to it, it's likely there's a lot of backroom negotiations going on between Reid, lobbyists and other key Dem and GOP lawmakers if this bill will survive and what it will look like, we just don't know the details yet.

I think you underestimate Reid's remaining political capital.

Here are my brief thoughts before I head to bed:

-Reid will still be the Senate majority leader after the new congress is sworn in, which is an extremely powerful position.
-A divided government, especially with the GOP edge in the House, is going to have a difficult time getting any of their own pet projects/favored legislation passed if they don't work together.
-Both parties essentially have the ability to lock each other out.
-Both parties have things they must get done to maintain their image with their constituencies.
-Democrats will need Reid to help them push through bills either for their locality or greater legislation
-Republicans will need Reid to be willing to bargain with them and give and take in order to get anything done.
-I don't think anyone outside of a few exceptions is willing to burn a considerable amount of political capital (such as what is needed to extend the Bush tax cuts) over online poker
-Pelosi needs Reid if she has a prayer of maintaining any influence
-There's probably enough votes to get it done in the house anyways even if Frank can't muster everyone up. Remember, the GOP was not universally behind the Frist move.
-I doubt anyone's constituencies will really care that much given everything else that's going on. It'll be a blip in the news that no one will see the effect of for a long time. Bigger fish to fry.
-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in tax revenue is hard to turn down right now, especially if you need to meet statutory paygo and regular paygo and whatever the hell else they have going on right now.
-Reid has a huge interest in getting this done, as having the casino lobby and their wallets behind him and the rest of the DNC in Nevada is HUUUUUGEE... ESPECIALLY after how narrow the margin of victory was (considering his opponent) in the last election.

I hope that all made sense. I am awfully tired. My apologies for any misstatements or logically inconsistent arguments.
