New York Assemblyman Clyde Vanel eyes renewed push for regulated online poker games in the Empire State.

June legislative showdown awaits. Assemblyman Vanel assumes responsibility to "whip these votes." Urges New York poker activists to contact State Assembly directly.

"'The budget effort didn’t work, but that happens with negotiations,' Vanel said. “What the exercise did is make us see that there’s more support for online poker than we previously thought."

Analysis: NY Assembly Bill 5250 is nearly identical to NY Senate Bill 3898, and would exclusively regulate online poker games, offer main operator licenses to existing land-based casinos at a minimum $10 million tax revenue commitment (5-year tax commitment, 10-year license validation), and enable lawmakers to consider whether some forms of poker "fall outside the general definition of gambling since those games are games of skill."

"4. New York courts have interpreted New York law to apply a more rigorous test in identifying a "contest of chance" than is applied by most states in this nation and the courts have found that where a contest pits the skill levels of the players against each other, those games are games of skill and not games of chance. Furthermore, the courts have not limited the legislature's ability to determine that certain forms of poker should fall outside the general definition of gambling since those games are games of skill"

While this is good news.... something tells me that online poker will be overlooked like the past 2 years.
