Slovenia - requirements for a residence and poker taxes Slovenia - requirements for a residence and poker taxes

I can't be bothered with quoting gambling law right now, but I can assure you with 100% confidence that poker is not taxed in Slovenia. I don't wanna say I'm leading poker community here, but I'm definitely one of its head figures for the last 15 years, so I'm not just talking out of my ass.

No idea about authorization whatsoever. No idea who even checks this stuff.

One change since last update. William Hill (iPoker) exited Slovenian market.

edit: I did kinda quote it here:

Thx for the help, I got an answer from the general financial office that was quite nice(regarding the tax). I will probably move in in 2020!

Can citizens of the European Union freely move there?

We can move in any country within the European Union as long as it's less then 3 months. For more than 3 months there is usually paperwork to do. Usually you have to show you got a job / pension / health insurance / enought money sustain yourself.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I was really serious about moving to the EU a couple years ago. Even went to the point where I sold my house.

The problem is in the EU, Americans are considered "3rd World". We must always have a work visa if you want to stay. Meaning, you cant just go over and get a job. You must be employed or be offered a EU job and have a contract to produce to the government. Also, your company that is hiring must produce documentation to the government that YOU outweigh the rest of ANY potential EU applicant. They get 1st dibs. If you lose the job, you basically have 3 months (maybe 6?) to find a new job. That company MUST sponsor you as well. I spent a lot of time trying to move to Brno (Czech Republic) and it was very difficult to the point I gave up. Also, depending on the country (again, it depends on the country, I don't know about Slovenia except I want to visit there!), the laws about dual citizenship for Americans are often different. Not to mention if they require you to pledge some sort of allegiance to the country, your US citizenship may be in jeopardy (Although rare, could still happen). Make sure to do A LOT of research before you make the move brother!

EDIT: Found this one Wiki. Dont have time to dig into the US docs, but this IS important.

A person may acquire Slovenian citizenship by naturalization upon satisfying the following conditions:
A total of 10 years residence in Slovenia, including 5 years continuous residence before the application
Renunciation of foreign citizenship (or providing proof it will automatically be lost).
Competency in the Slovenian language
Good character
Aged at least 18
sufficiently established in Slovenia so as not to require welfare payments

Why would you need Slovenian citizenship? I could be wrong but I think all you need is temporary residence permit, which you get if you own a real estate for example. So just buy a house, easy!

As a citizen he wouldn't have to worry about dual taxation nor being deported if he lost his job. Guess it really depends on the country. Some are more lax than others. In CZ they are pretty strict about having the right paper work, which is not cheap.

Really the best plan would be to marry someone and he should be set.

Wait, why are talking in 3rd person now, I thought we were talking about you?

No idea about CZ, but here's some info from US Embassy website:
https://si.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen...ework-permits/

Clearly I don't know how taxing works in US, but in Europe there's definitely no need for a citizenship in order to not be taxed twice.

Slovenia has deals with pretty much all of the world countries so that the dual taxation doesn't happen.

You should be able to stay here indefinitely by renewing the visa, especially if you get a job or get married to a Slovenian girl. Poker isn't considered a job here though.

If he wants to come to Slovenia to play poker, then getting a job kinda defeats the purpose? Not sure if marrying a girl in this short period is +EV either :P

I know is an lil old topic but i want to ask how the things are going in Slovenia about the sites and the law.
I asked that cause i will move for 2months now and more in the future(what can we do if love calls us), and for now i will use my country sites, but they said that cant tell me if will work or not cause depends of the Slovenian legislation.
So to get lil shorter:
1.Is legal to use online gambling sites?(here the fine is over 1000e)?
2.What sites can i acces if i will become a slovenian citizen(poker and beting)?
3. What about landbase, are there any casinos and betting(still have a weaknes for sport betting, and if brings money, so we need it)?
THanks in advance for the answers.

Hey mih26, nothing has changes for quite some time now, so if you read last 20 posts or so, you'll get all the info.

1. It's legal to use.

2. You being or not being a Slovenian citizen has nothing to do with access to the sites. Location is the problem.

Don't want to post links to affiliate site, but if you google PokerPro Slovenija you'll see under "ponudba" (offers) which poker sites are available for us.

3. By far the biggest casino is Perla in Nova Gorica. They have lots of good tournament series with up to 1M€ GTD, which are mostly filled with Italians (which is a good thing). At the time, Perla's Poker Room was the biggest in Europe: https://thecasinoperla.com/en/casino/poker-room

We only have one landbase and online betting provider run by the government. There are no dedicated betting landbased places if I'm aware, but tons of bars, news stands, most post offices, most petrol stations ... offer their betting. Saying all that, they have horrible odds, offer almost no single bets (you have to make a multi-bet of 3 iirc) and you pay taxes on the spot, if your winnings are over 300€ on a slip. So better to use other online providers as bet365 for example.

Did they get a licence? It seems like they also re-entered Slovakian market around the same time and I doubt they obtained licences in two different countries at the same day.

Hello there! Now you can play freely on PokerStars in Slovenia? Slovenia still has a 0% tax on poker winnings? Are there any legislative initiatives in this direction? In your opinion, will the tax be introduced in the next 3-5 years?

Hey mih. Hope you're enjoying Slovenia's quarantine shitshow :P

-No, nothing has changed. Still the same law since 2000s.
-You don't need to fill any papers whatsoever.
-Offering online games in Slovenia is not allowed, but because our law is against European Commission many sites still offer their games normally. But there are some who do comply and don't offer the games. But the sites are still legal to use, hence the 1. in previous reply.

Yes PokerStars is back and 0% tax, yes. There's no initiatives for any law changes, but that doesn't mean much tbh.

In 2016 I was "100% sure" there will be a new law within a year that's why I even waited it out when PokerStars exited our market and I was totally wrong, so I wouldn't dare guessing again

I enjoy it cause my gf is slovenian, and we stay more inside) but i hate this red zones cause i miss Kranjska Gora(You have here one of the most beautiful places in entire world).
I am glad to hear that nothing changed, cause i come from a country who made regulation on the gambling market and we need to pay tax each deposit and withdraw.
And it is some new things, i saw on post that they have some new beting site(i dont know now exactly the name). So they make a step forward.

The Slovenian authorities in 2016 wanted to introduce a 15% poker tax?

Is it possible that I can somehow, as an EU citizen, get Slovenian temporary residence?
I am ready to come there and do paperwork but I don't plan to live in Slovenia and as a poker player I don't have proof of employment and that is big obstacle ofc.

If someone have an idea how to do it with all those obstacles I would appreciate to hear it.
