Hi guys,

does anybody know about taxation on (online) poker winnings in mexico?

I am German citizen, living in UK and thought about an extended holiday in Mexico (5 months or so). But of course I wanted to click some buttons and maybe play some live poker during my stay. So, I was wondering what the situation is there.

So, I would appreciate very much if anyone could tell me about the taxes there and if I can play IPoker, Pokerstars, Pokerbros legally there.

If you know of another warm and safe country during ~October to April (not crazy hot though) where playing poker does not cause much trouble (regarding taxes), I would also love to hear about it.

Thank you very much

You may pay a small cashout tax on winnings for live poker, it depends on the jurisdiction. I am sure you can play online poker in Mexico tax-free. How would anyone know? AFAIK all sites work in Mexico.

Taxes are based on residency you have to spend over 6 months of a year somewhere to be considered a tax resident. So if you have a residency in the UK and spend 5 months in Mexico your residency and tax status hasn't changed.

This is just my understanding of it better to do some research and not trust randoms on the internet.

Thank you guys. Well, it is about knowing the laws/rules and then break or not break them
Just going to another country and not care about anything can get you in trouble. So, I would really appreciate if someone knew about the legislation regarding (online) poker there and could share a bit. Thank you

probably a good idea to pay for a tax advisor that has knowledge of the mexican tax system instead of asking random people on twoplustwo if you want to be on the safe side.

True. But somewhat often you get good ideas from people here. There has been a bunch of especially American pros who played online for a living in Mexico. They might know a thing or two

I gave you the answer a few posts above but seems that wasn't enough. Its not rocket science to google this stuff yourself but there you go.

https://globalisationguide.org/tax/183-day-rule/

If you are only going there for a few months and never establish a permanent residence why would you be eligible to pay taxes.

Thank you very much for all the replies! I did the googling of course and it brought following result https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/mexico/...ource%20income. stating that you indeed can be liable to tax regarding Mexican-sourced income even though not being tax resident. Of I understand that correctly of course, which I might not. So, it doesn't seem to be that easy as a 183day rule and I remember good old Boris Becker losing his trial against German tax authorities back in the days even though it was never in question that he mainly lived in Monaco and probably even less than 90 days per year in Germany.
That makes it dicey. Do online Poker winnings made from Mexico count as mexican-sourced income f.e.?
