Any infos about residence and online poker taxes?

Poker is not taxable here in Slovenia. Actually, there's no law for online poker per se, only for poker in general, which is taxed by casinos and not by the players. Therefor we do not pay any taxes.

On the other hand, it's not allowed to advertise (online) gambling products, if you do not have a license (only government companies have licenses - monopoly). That's why some ISPs had to block websites like bwin.com and pokerstars.com (about 2 years ago iirc). Which was no big deal really, you only needed to change DNSs to google ones and everything work just fine. Also sites changed its URLs to www2.bwin.com and pokerstars.eu/si anyway.

I'm glad that you don't pay taxes, however, what about the permanent residence? A job is required (I guess PPP is not a job there)?

Up to 90 day permit
Well, US and Slovenia (probably whole European Union) have an agreement where you do not need any special permit or visa, if you visit Slovenia for up to 90 days (as a tourist or business trip).


Temporary permit
If you want to stay in Slovenia for more than 90 days, you need temporary residence permit. You need a "reason" to get this permit. It has to be either work related (no, poker pro isn't a job here), studies, family matters, real estate/property, health care or you have to have a Slovenian heritage (up to 4th generation, if I understand this correctly).
You get this permit for 1 year and you have to renew it every year before it expires.

Permanent permit
After living in Slovenia for at least 5 years, you can get permanent residency.

According to our Statistical Office of Slovenia...
In 2011, English was spoken by 85% of people aged 25–34, 67% of people aged 35–49 and 45% of people aged 50–64 let.
In Ljubljana, these numbers are even higher.
(for 13% of people, Slovene is a foreign language and most of them do not speak English - manual labourers from south)

hello, I'm Italian and I'm considering the idea of ​​moving to Malta or Slovenia. I am an hour's drive from Nova Gorica and for this reason it is more comfortable. i am not from anywhere but can point out that one might get a more lasting permit to stay if one has enough savings and bank statements to show incomes. (the same as with getting a flat, with maybe some additional references from the last renting place that they might like in the uk and ireland where by the way one needs no permit to stay if from the eu.) this is the case in malta as one can see looking into 2+2 malta talks.

if one gets no lasting permit, one needs to get out every 3 months or so and then maybe but it isnt sure one gets electricity and internet then. one might try to get a job that gives all these things and up to a 5 year permit, just that getting any job is difficult during the current internet times and often high unemployment, e.g. spain has some 1 in 4.

the problem comes when pension starts if one has no nationality or enough pension money, in case one needs to pay at least the flat till death. to get nationality, taxes are most likely needed, and usually language ability.

there are lots of countries to pick from all over the world and some are cheaper while others offer other goods and in some .com okay. madrid has plenty live games after some years or even now some with maybe 10e cap but online poker is limited in most of mediterranean making nlh next to mandatory at this time but taxes are on the gray area in much of mediterranean and just maybe from .com sites one can pay tax but then one is limited to those till nationality, that one maybe gets.

Nova Gorica would be a great choice imo. As for taxes, our government has proven itself time and time again for being completely incompetent collecting them, so even if there were any changes there wouldn't be much to worry about.

As of now you don't have to pay any taxes on your poker winnings. However there is a new law in effect on 25th October prohibiting direct bank transfers of funds, so we'll just keep using e-wallets. That's the best those clowns can do anyway so party on.

Like Doctor Poker said, new law is coming out and some people are worried, even though its almost the same as it is was before. Online poker winnings stay tax free, tho.

For example, in Italy you can not withdraw funds from foreign poker room for tax evasion, since exist. IT and holds taxes at the source. You worry way too much. All you need is a Skrill (Moneybookers) account for deposits and withdrawals. You will have no problems playing.

The only question is whether or not you will have to prove you are a resident here, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
