Federal Online Poker Legislation: Coming To America Or Shipwrecked In Congress?

Quote:
Meanwhile, Sen. Harry Reid has offered some confusing and contradictory statements on the potential future for federal online poker legislation. The man who once said passage of such a bill was “the most important issue facing Nevada since Yucca Mountain” and who is rumored to be working on a third poker-only bill to bring before Congress later this year with his fellow Nevadan Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), also said in a June 2013 interview with The Las Vegas Sun that he believes the time for federal passage of a bill has essentially come and gone. “I felt for several months now that I don’t see any movement on this,” Reid said. “I don’t see anything happening.”

Yet two months later, Reid said he is introducing a new bill and that he now believes he has the support and votes to push it through before the end of the year. A key component of the new measure is said to be the establishment of a joint online governing body between Nevada and New Jersey that would be created via an interstate compact.

Italy cannot block online gambling, says EU court [maltatoday.com]

The CJEU ruled that EU Member States restricting national gambling markets in order to favour the economic interest of incumbents over operators licensed in other Member States is against EU law. National legislation which precludes all cross-border activity in the betting and gaming sector, irrespective of the form in which that activity is undertaken, is contrary to EU law.

Does this mean Italians will be able to log on to the ROW Stars site now?

Time for law and order in Internet gambling [thehill.com]
... I know from first-hand experience that it is possible to regulate Internet gambling in a way that prevents criminals or terrorists from laundering money and protects consumers from fraud.

...

In fact, while working in Europe, I did not see even one instance of money laundering associated with regulated Internet gambling.

While his state is not currently engaged in online gaming legislation, Executive Director James McHugh of the newly formed Massachusetts Gaming Commission said he personally believes the advent of online gaming, in his state and elsewhere, is fairly inevitable, given how the Internet has shaped or is reshaping virtually every industry.
Hopefully we get something going in 2014 :-/ "fairly inevitable" just doesn't give me a sense that it is going to happen sooner rather than later.

Police, security say crime is low at Maryland Live casino [baltimoresun.com]
But the level of crime at the casino and surrounding area has been far lower than even opponents had expected. For a place that has drawn in a day as many people as Oriole Park at Camden Yards can hold, "it's a remarkably low incidence of crime," said Lt. John McAndrew, a supervisor in community relations for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

MGM Resorts’ Jim Murren on online poker, social media, competition and the Red Sox

Quote:
We have not launched because we have taken the view that poker-only here is not a profitable enterprise. There’s not enough liquidity in our state. Our company has always preferred and have been staunch supporters of a federal effort on poker. But I think our optimism on that has waned dramatically. It looks to us that that’s all but a lost opportunity for the federal government and that we will be where we are today in a state-by-state environment.

New Jersey is leading the charge for full-on games. That leads us to conclude that the best solution for our state is for Nevada to exert its rightful leadership as a regulatory jurisdiction, that it needs to have a full complement of games and be able to compact with other states to increase liquidity pools and increase overall visitation to all of the sites. I think that will happen.

We’re partners with Boyd Gaming and bwin Party Poker in a company that will be exploring all those jurisdictions. Boyd and bwin have been working in New Jersey. Because of our current situation in New Jersey, our interest is in a trust and we have no ability to discuss that strategically with them, but we’ll be a beneficiary when it does launch.

An al-Qaida Poker Network?

Thackston and Grinols are at it again...

Column: Online gambling is a strategic national threat [tampabay.com]
A single poker game takes just a few hours to transfer $5 million as was recently demonstrated — legally — by American player Brian Hastings with his Swedish competitor half a world away. An established al-Qaida poker network could extract from the United States enough untraceable money in six days to fund an operation like the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
