The author went on QJs earlier today to discuss the article. I went on the show right after to offer up my perspective.
I listened to both her and your QJ segments today and you did an exceptional job with the counterpoint, Rich. I felt that her concern about players being tricked into supporting the skill argument was especially off-base. In addition to the practical reasons you provided, she completely overlooked the fact that plenty of poker players (such as those that would rather not self-identify as "gamblers" in the traditional sense) would have better lives if our society were able to properly acknowledge that competitive poker is distinct from traditional gambling.
This issue has always been one of the most resonant with me personally. Nobody's tricking me into anything, I understand the logic behind the
fact that poker as a skill game (under the socially-relevant definitions, at least), and it has more importance than being some trite legal angle. Keep up the great work Rich.
