Aww shucks. Up for a playdate anytime. I'm dying to have people to cook dinner for with my new toy so if you want to come over with Gravy I could make some mashed potatoes to go with her.

(and steak)

Spent the day yesterday with some friends and the horses out in Azle, TX (my horse is staying in Texas w/ friends when I move to Vegas next week - she is too old to travel) and took this adorable pic of my friend's cat, JT. He is a Selkirk and truly the coolest cat I have ever known. He is 2 yrs old and really makes me rethink my self-imposed cat ban every time I play with him!

Why do you have a cat ban?

I absolutely love cats, and having one that loves to snuggle up to me is (mostly) great. He's also enjoying the new toy Ian's mom brought him for Christmas.

It's mostly a lifestyle situation. The lighter my load, the easier my travels.
My mom in Houston is keeping my cat for the time being and my horse (25 years old and retired) is staying at my girlfriend's house in Azle, Texas (west of DFW). So I just have one little Scottish Terrier girl with me which for our life is much, much easier being that we travel a lot. It's easier to find someone to take just Rylee for a week vs. Rylee and a cat and a horse. LOL.

Makes a whole lot of sense.

Wilbur's had an on-going ear problem, and we're pretty sure it is some kind of food allergy. So, he's being put on a hypoallergenic diet. This means that I roasted two huge turkey just for him yesterday, and about a dozen huge yams. I'm hoping this will last him about a month. I just wanted to know if anyone's ever done this before or had experiences with a pet that had a food allergy. Tyty

It wasn't a food allergy situation, but growing up my family adopted two kittens (a brother and sister) from a local farmer. We were told they were about three months old, but it soon became clear that they could not stomach regular cat food (so we suspected after the fact that they were younger, too young to have been taken away from their mother). Even plain milk would cause them to have the runs, and they weren't always making it to the litter box.

So my mom made them chicken and rice for a few months and eased them back onto a regular cat food diet. I would joke that she spent more time cooking for the cats than she did for us kids.

I don't know if you can take anything away from this other than that my family also cooked for our pets, though. Turkey and yams sounds like your dog is going to be living large.

You also might try searching on line for hypoallergenic or all natural lines of dog food. They are way more expensive but might be necessary for your dog. Your vet should have some sort of list of stuff like that.

Aww, JT is so cute!!! The lengths a pet parent wouldn't go to for their babies. My babies, however, are driving me a little bonkers with all the barking and meowing. I shouldn't complain, they probably just want mommy to get off the computer.

So far, there hasn't been any improvement with his ears. Going to give it another week at least though and hope that things start turning around.

ugh...ear problems are so tilting...Rylee used to have them when she was younger...Scotties are really prone to skin allergies, she also gets red spots around her nose, and her paws are really itchy. Last year, I started cooking her food her her, thinking it was all related and tired of vet bills/medications/ear ointments/drops. The home cooked food seemed to possibly cure her ear issues, although the other issues remain. So I'm not 100% sure that's what cured her ears, but I do still cook her food. When we are traveling, or when she is staying at my mom's house while I am away, she eats a 100% organic/non-animal tested dry food as per the PETA website. And she seems to do ok with that as well. (I don't though @ $50/20lb bag )

Hope Wilbur gets better soon...maybe it's just a young dog thing that he will grow out of...

I'm a sucker...

Friend of a friend had a kitten they found in the neighborhood. Turns out it was from a litter from a cat that had been abandoned by someone that had their home foreclosed. They couldn't keep the kitten since their daughter was allergic (stupid kids...) and were going to take it to the pound.

So, now I have another kitten.

Meet Slagathor.

Oh, he's so cute!!!

Imagine that said in a really squealing voice and you'll get the picture.

I just want to grab him and hold him and pet him and kiss him and hug him and smother him and stroke his fur and rub his belly and call him George.

Spoiler:
The first time I said something like that to my boyfriend he did not know the reference. Please tell me someone here knows where that's from.

Personally, I'd consider that grounds for a scathing break up...

I could understand not getting the Of Mice and Men reference, but to not get either that or the Looney Tunes reference is unforgivable.

My in-laws have an english lab that gets ear problems. They use some sort of vinegar solution from the vet to frequently clean his ears, as well as an anti-fungal ointment when they're infected. It usually clears it up in a few days to a couple weeks. It has happened fairly regularly his entire life, he's 6 now.

He swims a lot, and they attribute the ear issues to being agitated by his swimming habits. I think it helps a lot if they clean his ears with the vinegar before/after swims, but doesn't eliminate it entirely.

And in the spirit of the thread here he is as a puppy.

Now I want another cat so I can have a kitten.

Actually we are considering getting another one when I go back to work since our current cat is used to having someone at home all day and we're both worried he might go completely bat **** insane if he has to spend five days a week by himself for 9-10 hours a day.

I'm actually less worried than my boyfriend; I think he'd adapt, and he spends a ton of the day sleeping anyway, but far be it for me to disagree if it might get me another cat to enjoy.

If some geneticist could find a way to breed them so they stay the size of kittens, they'd be richer than the Walton family.
