Moving up through the stakes

Does anybody actually move up with the 25-50 buyin recommendation rule? Is that an old rule?
I feel like now that games are tougher 100-200 buyin seems more like it but maybe its just cuz I run worse at low stakes but good at micros.
Anybody just skip moving up all together and just go by # of hands or # of months?

I use 20 bi but find I am good and moving up and down stakes based on my bankroll; highest I have played is 400NL currently at 200NL I like to play in the lowest rake environment possible and I think you might just get caught in the rake trap of micros playing 100-200 buyins but it depends on how well you deal with swings and how willing you are to move down when you hit downswings
