Hey there fellow poker players.

I've been playing poker for about 10 years now mostly live 1/2, 2/5, 5/5 with no real bankroll just hop into the games. 3 months ago I try to started a journey to really learn poker on go up in stakes with proper bankroll management. I started playing nl5 on GGPoker and I got a subscriptions on upswing to learn. I can seem to stay motivated for long. I'll be able to play a day or 2 at 5nl an then I get bored and end up playing a limit that I only have 1 buy in for. My question for you guys.

How can I keep myself motivated playing low stakes and any tricks if I get demotivated not to go blow my bankroll on a higher limit.

Thanks you

Does the site you play on allow you to have your stack shown in bb rather than cash amounts? For some people that can be helpful — I am risking 20 bb on this call might make you think a bit more than, “well it is only $1”, even though they are equivalent. Force yourself to think in bb even if your site does not allow this. My roll went from 300 to 400 bb might seem more interesting than I won $5.

If that fails, then the money you are risking is likely just too insignificant to hold your interest. You should certainly not be playing for stakes you cannot afford to lose, but you should play for stakes that are significant that you. What level that would be is up to you to determine. If you find yourself thinking a lot of things like, “I know I should fold here, but what the hell; it is only $5”, then you might want to consider higher stakes. Just be aware f course that the level of opposition will increase if you do move up

There are two things you need to change to accomplish your goal.

First, your stake needs to fit two criteria: an amount you can afford to lose but makes you smile when you win.

When you choose your stake, don't think about it just in relation to your current bank balance. Consider it from a longer perspective: what level of game will allow you to play every day with very little risk of going broke before your next cash infusion?

Second, you need to link your poker income to something that matters. Poker itself isn't enough motivation for you, so choose a meaningful short term goal and make it subject to your poker winnings. This can be a new gadget, an desirable food treat, a night out, a poker resource such as a training course or software, etc. Buy it from your winnings while keeping enough in your bankroll to work toward the next goal.

Essentially, you appear to be suffering from the same lack of motivation that poker players feel when they use "play money" sites. The stakes seem irrelevant, so the game itself won't drive you. The first tip will help provide motivation while the second will reward you for completing the grind.

Recognize this for what it is: gambling. Talk to people who love you or to a qualified professional to find out whether you have a problem, and then take all the steps necessary to address it off the felt. This behavior can easily destroy a poker career and a life.
