Like the title says. Anyone else feel the payouts in poker tournaments are too top heavy? I think less money should be paid at the top and there should be a more money payout for all the other spots. For example ff you look at the WSOP main event in 2019 Ensan got 10 million while the 2nd place finisher got 6 million. That's a difference of 4 million. I mean is 1st place that much better that the difference is 4 million dollars more? 4 million dollars more. I mean both player beat out 8,567 other players.
More money could be used to bump everyone else a little more if they payouts weren't so top heavy.

You should take a look at how things were 20 years ago. Winner took 30% of the prizepool.

It doesn’t happen so much in televised events like the main event because the tv people don’t want it, but that’s why there often are deals made at the final table of many live tourneys (this seems to be less prevalent online). This especially makes sense since the structure of most tourneys leads to everyone being essentially short stacked late in the tourney. This leads to a situation where luck is more of a determinative factor at the point where the money differences are the greatest. Most players understand this and are often willing to make deals.
