Because you are making an active decision that kills 5 people. The other way you are not getting involved, so you are blameless (in a way).
If it's obvious to press the button, then you can tweak it a bit and it becomes more ambiguous. (Say someones tells you they will kill shoot 10 people tomorrow, unless you shoot dead 5 people in front of you. And you believe them. Do you shoot the 5 people in front of you.)

Also, is it a sign I play too much poker when I use "btn" instead of "button" when referring to it in a non-poker setting?
Yeah but that's a bad example.

Jude, if you and three friends are left on a lonely island, and you know next ship is coming in a week, but you also know you won't survive for that long and there's no food. Would you kill one of your friends to give food for you and your other friends, if you knew that if you didn't you'd all die for sure? Now that's a dilemma.

Edit: Ok, after reading that through it's a bit too sick. I doubt anyone would kill their friend.

Yo Jude well done for ur success...
I just listened to ur pokerstatic interview, and i need to ask are u Irish or American?
I have never heard an Irish accent like that, very weird.
I read on an Irish boards that u were from Meath, and I must admit I have never heard anyone from Meath speak like that. All the best but keep it real .

I think this has happened. Not on an island, but on a boat after a shipwreck. Well, i guess this has happened a ton in history, but I know of at least one case. It was one of the favorite examples of my criminal law lecturer.

I wanted to ask what is the best advice you could give someone that wants to play for a living that already has a good job? See my problem is its hard for me to quit my job to play(i have a good career), and i think my results go up and down since i dont really worry about going busto... I have since separated poker from other finances, and i hope this will help me take things more seriously. Any advice you have would be great. Good luck at the tables!

Regards,

Gabe
Thanks. I don't think i can give a very informative answer since i know nothing about you or your job, but i think in general if you're happy enough in your work and are not crushing at poker, you should probably stay in work. Gl.

Thanks. People say this to me a lot. I very often get asked if i'm american. But i was born and raised in meath, i have no american blood relatives and have not been to america for more than a few weeks at a time. My dad did spend a lot of his adult life in the US tho and maybe i picked up some idiosyncrasies from him(even tho he has an irish accent ????). I also watch a lot of tv, maybe thats it...

Re: The well, oldjude.

well im from scotland and i dont think you sounded American at all in the interview , i ve heard plenty of irish accents like that , people automatically assume that theres only one accent for ireland , like they hear in tv or films , Ireland is the same as everywhere else it has different dialects for every region and town.

Oh and by the way i really liked your interview and your well.

Only one question...

do you coach ?

Re: The well, oldjude.

That seems like a weird version of the train track question.

Oldjude maybe you'll find this closer, but you might have heard it before. If you stumble upon the same track but the train is heading toward a crying baby, and on the other track is a fat man (age 30-40, w/e) would you press the button to change the course of the train to kill the man?

The question just revolves around someone's willingness to actually take the action that will kill someone who wasn't going to be killed.

Also, have you answered what kinda music the station you grind to plays? Do you think playing with music affects your concentration at all?

Why is purple is purple?

Why is purple color?

Is it a question of metaphysics or semantics?

EDIT: Would you prefer a fluffy puppy or a puffy bunny?

EDIT2: Rate in order of awesomeness: foul bachelor frog, depression dog, socially akward penguin, advice dog, courage wolf, philosoraptor. Which one of these would relate the most?

well you've covered most everything I could think to ask in a 500+ post thread so I'll just go with the basics:

Bushmills or Jameson? Or is there some secret excellent Irish whiskey that us north americans don't know about?

(Maybe you covered this too...)

You pay your sister $20/hour? C'mon, Jude. She's your sister FFS. IMO you should give her a raise.

No, it isn't. That's below average in Ireland IIRC.

This one is a lot closer IMO and I def would not press the button in order to change the course of the train. There is no EV to be gained by pressing the button, either way there is one human life lost.

If for example a car drove over the guardrail and into the water, and you only had time to jump in and save either the baby or the 40 yr old man, I would def save the baby, but in that situation the man is going to die anyways.... In the other train example, if you press the button 5 lives are being saved, in this example one person dies regardless. I would not take the life of an innocent man who was otherwise not going to die simply to save the baby....

That's why I think it's closer @ least, I hope I did a reasonable job explaining it....
