Re: The well, oldjude.

Hey oldjude, thanks alot for doing this!

- Any thoughts on your rather low (especially EV adjusted) winrate for NL100 and NL200

- aejones once said (in his thread about the evolution of a poker player) that when getting better most players will switch multiple times between playing tight and loose (and not only because of adjusting to the table). Did that happen to you as well? Did you have moments where you actually thought you are great, then lost a couple of buy-ins making moves and then felt like "well, maybe I'm just a spewtard-monkey."?

- favourite pc game? (if it hasn't been asked so far)

thanks in advance,
cheers

Is that you Grog? I've not played much with GHF but i watched a video of his and i know he crushed 400NL on AP in 09. He seems to be very aggro and i would say he has potential to be very good but needs to get better at giving up in pots, in the video i saw he just never seemed to stop firing.

One massive advance in my game was that i used to think that if i got bluffed out of a pot that it would be catastrophic. Like for a vague example if i had KQ on a K-J-2o-3o-A board and a tight opponent shoved on me, i would just not be able to deal with it if he happened to be turning Jx into a bluff or whatever. But it doesn't matter if he has it or not, you have to go with your honest appraisal of his likely range and accept that sometimes you have to fold.

No problem.

Yes. Firstly the point i played the most hands at this level was when i first switched to cash and was at my weakest, secondly when i play that low i experiment with weird lines and crazy -ev bluffs a lot more than when i play high stakes(pretty obv why). I'm pretty sure if i took a prop bet or something i could have a huge WR at ssnl.

- aejones once said (in his thread about the evolution of a poker player) that when getting better most players will switch multiple times between playing tight and loose (and not only because of adjusting to the table). Did that happen to you as well?

Yeah this happened to me a little, though i found playing tight to be boring.

Did you have moments where you actually thought you are great, then lost a couple of buy-ins making moves and then felt like "well, maybe I'm just a spewtard-monkey."?

I never really thought i was bad, i have spewed a lot though.

- favourite pc game? (if it hasn't been asked so far)

Prince of Persia.

thanks in advance,
cheers

Your welcome.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, awesome read.

What would you consider your biggest weakness?

Do you ever go through a stretch where you feel like you're terrible and are making tons of mistakes?

probably most winning high stakes regs are at least capable of playing an effective loose-aggressive style.

I wouldn't decide before i play. I would just sit and adjust. I wouold imagine however that playing a tag style would yield the most profit.

Surely a player of your skill level relative to opponents at that limit would be able to play an enormous number of hands profitably and thus an ultra LAG style would be most profitable?

Re: The well, oldjude.

have you every thought of getting a personal assistant?

if you had to go travelling for a year with friends where would you go?

how much do you excercise?

you say that you are sometimes lazy, if you weren't as lazy how would your daily routine change? i.e. would you get up earlier/go to sleep earlier - do more non poker things etc

do you cook a lot for yourself? would you say you eat healthily? what is your favourite home-made dish? do you have a regular dish for breakfast? (ie. fruit/porridge)

what are the main positives and negatives being a full time professional poker player?

would you consider yourself balla in spending money? what is the biggest purchase you've made? (apart from a house)

have you thought of making any investments with the money you've earned from poker? if so what are they?

if poker was abolished today what profession would you take up??? you have to give an answer for this

what are your main talents/weaknesses? do you think this has a lot to do with your upbringing or your own maturity after you left home?

how competitive are you in poker and non-poker activities on a scale of 1-10?

what are your favourite blogs that you regularly look at?

do you have a radio station/playlist that you normally grind to?

would you say that so far this year you have fallen short of/met/ exceeded your expectations of yourself?

I have a friend who is a successful HU player playing mid/high stakes - has played a little 6max - given this limitted information - would you say it is more plus EV for him to try learning NL 6max or try playing more HU PLO? would you recommed getting a coach for each? or try put some volume in first

how uncertain would you say is the future of poker? do you think people overestimate or underestimate the variance? (like a lot of people think the sky is going to fall anyday) i think you said earlier if you tried really hard most people could earn at least $100K in the first year - would say that will change a lot in the next 5 years?

summarise your philosophy in life? what motivates you? have you any fears for the future?

If there was a train going towards 10 people on a track to kill them - if you had a button which would divert the train to another track and kill 5 people - would you press it? reasons?

Thanks a lot - i've read every single page so far! Appreciate you doing this. Hope some good karma is being shipped your way. GLP.

Yes, but right now i am paying my sister $20/hr to clean and do paper-work and other stuff for me.

if you had to go travelling for a year with friends where would you go?

Probably New Zealand.

how much do you excercise?

A little bit, not as much as i'd like, mostly cardio.

you say that you are sometimes lazy, if you weren't as lazy how would your daily routine change? i.e. would you get up earlier/go to sleep earlier - do more non poker things etc

I would probably have started my own business by now, and play about 3 times the amount of hands i play.

do you cook a lot for yourself? would you say you eat healthily? what is your favourite home-made dish? do you have a regular dish for breakfast? (ie. fruit/porridge)

I eat very healthy because my gut is a little delicate and i have no choice, i haven't eaten meat, processed food, fast food, sugar, caffeine or wheat in over a year.

what are the main positives and negatives being a full time professional poker player?

Positives: freedom of making my own sched, pays better than any job i could have gotten, no alarm clock, its incredibly adrenaline-pumping and exciting at times.

Negs:Very stressful, sometimes boring and repetitive(but what isn't?) Sometimes alienates me from my normal social scene.

would you consider yourself balla in spending money? what is the biggest purchase you've made? (apart from a house)

I didn't end up getting the house. The most expensive thing i have bought with poker money for myself is probably is a 55'' tv 2,500(abt $3,500). Bought my dad a car for $10k.

have you thought of making any investments with the money you've earned from poker? if so what are they?

I am interested in it, but until i can devote most of my time to it i am just going to focus on teh pokers.

if poker was abolished today what profession would you take up??? you have to give an answer for this

Probably, with the money i have saved, i would be like a delivery guy or something until i found a business to get into

what are your main talents/weaknesses? do you think this has a lot to do with your upbringing or your own maturity after you left home?

My weaknesses are probably that i can be insecure and too much of a push-over(the opposite of my poker-table persona). I can be unreliable too.

Strengths, i am generous and down to earth, and consider myself pretty smart in a lot of ways(a complete dummy in others), not bad looking either .

how competitive are you in poker and non-poker activities on a scale of 1-10?

8 or 9.

what are your favourite blogs that you regularly look at?

aejones, i don't look at much else, unless its got a cool looking name(sauces last entry was f***** awesome.)

do you have a radio station/playlist that you normally grind to?

Yes.

would you say that so far this year you have fallen short of/met/ exceeded your expectations of yourself?

Money-wise i was hoping to double my profit of half a mil from last yr an go for the milli, but it doesn't look like its going to happen at this point.

I have a friend who is a successful HU player playing mid/high stakes - has played a little 6max - given this limitted information - would you say it is more plus EV for him to try learning NL 6max or try playing more HU PLO? would you recommed getting a coach for each? or try put some volume in first

6m. Volume, then coach.

how uncertain would you say is the future of poker? do you think people overestimate or underestimate the variance? (like a lot of people think the sky is going to fall anyday) i think you said earlier if you tried really hard most people could earn at least $100K in the first year - would say that will change a lot in the next 5 years?

I don't know man, but i think nlhe will go the way of lhe(sigh), will take longer but will probably get less and less profitable...unless uigea gets repealed(pleeeease).

summarise your philosophy in life? what motivates you? have you any fears for the future?

I want to be happy, but i would also like to be balanced and never become as extreme as most of the people who i admire(the people i admire most live very low-key modest lives and will never be famous).

If there was a train going towards 10 people on a track to kill them - if you had a button which would divert the train to another track and kill 5 people - would you press it? reasons?

Wait, kill 5 instead of 10? Obv hit the button(am i reading this right?)

Thanks a lot - i've read every single page so far! Appreciate you doing this. Hope some good karma is being shipped your way. GLP.

Thanks.
I spent about 25 mins answering this so you better enjoy it.

Re: The well, oldjude.

Hey Oldjude,

I heard your interview on Pokerstatic, and though it was great. You seem like a down to earth guy. I havent read this whole well, and sorry if you have answerd this question... I wanted to ask what is the best advice you could give someone that wants to play for a living that already has a good job? See my problem is its hard for me to quit my job to play(i have a good career), and i think my results go up and down since i dont really worry about going busto... I have since separated poker from other finances, and i hope this will help me take things more seriously. Any advice you have would be great. Good luck at the tables!

Regards,

Gabe

wtf

I read this like 5 times to make sure I'm getting everything right. Who the hell wouldn't press the button unless it's 10 people you hate.

There's a possibility some of the 10 people may get away if you don't press the btn, but you will know w/ 100% certainty that you are killing 5 people if you do press the btn. It's clearly +EV to press the btn and on a poker forum everyone will press the btn, but there are people who would rather not get involved than live w/ the guilt knowing w/ 100% certainty that those 5 people died b/c they pressed the btn...

Also, is it a sign I play too much poker when I use "btn" instead of "button" when referring to it in a non-poker setting?
