This thread is filled with priceless information and insight. I'm truly grateful you were able to share your wisdom and perspective on such critical topics that I found both interesting and useful. You may not read this ever, but if you do, please realize you've inspired and educated me and I'm sure many others. This thread has been especially motivational for me because I can relate to many of your posts that are not directly related to poker, such as how personality comes into play. Thanks for your help, you sound like a good person and I wish you the best of luck.

I feel the same exact way, and it brings even more value to his advice.

I now have a new answer to the "If you could go back to anywhere at any time in history..." question. I really believe the fact that Tom Dwan shopping at Best Buy has beaten out the Battle of Zama is a testament to the amount of win in this thread 7 Pages down, can't wait to put some time in and read the rest of this!

hey mr. galfond hope you are still reading this!

you made an interesting post over 6 years ago in this thread: http://archives2.twoplustwo.com/show...fpart=all&vc=1

you basically sounded like you were about to quit poker or at the very least that it would take a backseat to something else. obviously that didn't quite happen, what made you change your mind? what stakes were you playing when you made that post?

looking back, other than the part about wanting to quit poker, do you still have the same sentiments?

Galfond is a great player, i'd say top five in the world. Does he have the highest earnings on PTR?

Hm this is tough to get across but Ill try. I find many people a tunnel vision foundation to understanding poker, what I mean is they begin poker viewing it either as building off of a bluffing strategy or building off a vb strat, or building off of lag, tag, etc. Do you think there is a foundation you built off of such as these? You seem to me to be a very solid foundational player, personally you seem like the most solid level 1 level 2 level 3 poker player, but you dont get out of line often and try to level someone on a ridiculous level, do you merit people like durrrr or fullflush or someone who does do this, or do u think this is a leak of very high stakes players, bc it is not neccessary or etc?

I like this question (or, more correctly, statement). I'm interested in hearing Jman's answer to this statement too...

Why would you say someone has a solid foundation when you don't know what the foundation of poker is? Or, if you know what the foundation of poker is, why are you asking what it is?

Sorry that may be confusing, but they are two different uses of foundation I think, there is the general foundation that any particular player possesses which is unique to that person, that is their foundation, what they built off of, and then by solid foundational skills I mean more having a solid grasp of abc, and little bit of d poker as far as galfond is concerned, Idk if that makes sense, but hopefully that makes it a bit more clear.

also i was going to email a question to pokerstatic but might as well ask it here too:

i'm a philosophy/econ major. i often notice in my philosophy classes a connection between the kind of intelligence that succeeds in philosophy and the kind of intelligence that succeeds in poker.

maybe this is obvious because of the ties to logic, but i think the connection might still be underrated. i feel like not often in our society you come across nuance like that of poker(e.g. folding is better than calling, but shoving is best! etc.), and philosophy is a rare area where that type of nuance is welcomed (and crucial).

One of my professors in particular comes across like someone who would be great at poker. and your attitude towards teaching poker reminds me very good philosophy professors attitudes towards teach philosophy.

i've also noticed plenty of poker players who i feel could improve their games from exposure to the logical nuances of studying philosophy.

sorry for random babbling i posted this in a hurry before class. anywho,
i'm wondering what are your thoughts as to connections between the two areas?
