How would someone else be in control of your email account?

This, this, this.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but I believe Mat is saying that if there is a mod who can confirm that you are who you say you are, he should be able to help you. So contacting a mod and saying "Hi, I'm XYZ, can you vouch for me" isn't going to work. But if there's a mod that knows you, or knows people who know you, etc., that's who you should be reaching out to.

Pretty sure we need to assume that the entire database was compromised, so that wouldn't be any more secure, no.

In any event, they've done a great job of making the marketplace completely insecure with the WSOP coming up in a short amount of time.
Now we've got people making accounts and saying Hey I'm really the OP, but I can't get into my account. Trust me and send the money where I tell you" No way of knowing until its too late. And all of these new accounts can't pm either, so post your sensitive financial information on the forums.
Really incredibly short-sighted to think there wouldn't be a lot of people in this situation considering there's a lot of accounts on this site over 5 years old. Forum email address isn't the first thing you think to switch when changing an email address. Of course a lot of people could have updated their email address if they had been given something other then no warning.
Also obstinate and set in their way that a mod "vouching" is the only acceptable thing. I linked Mat to a post made showing my stars name and included a screen shot of my stars cashier with the email in the background and that doesn't seem to be good enough for him.
I don't see how having a copy of someone's drivers license and seeing them in person is possibly more secure.

Sure are quite a few posters long on criticisms and short on workable solutions.
I know it sucks, but patience is the key right now.
