I don’t know about forums, but there are a ton of examples of pay to remove ad apps. Pretty much every Zynga app works like this I think. Then again the ads that you are forced to watch if you don’t pay are basically commercials that prevent you from doing anything else while they are playing, so that is clearly different from this. Honestly, i am back to getting those ads that hijack my screen again and make the forum unreadable which is why I’d love this feature.

Two bigger sites are

https://www.religiousforums.com/forums/
https://www.usmessageboard.com/ (n.b. this site is a terrifyingly bad politics forum; forgive me for linking it :P)

They both use the same forum software, so I think it's a built in feature. It doesn't seem like the "account upgrades" options are visible unless you have an actual account, but e.g. the first offers no ads for $4/month.

All you have to do is make a cogent business case for it BS, show TPTB that for some rational estimates of user / traffic loss associated with pay walls that the revenue hit from not showing ads will be made up for by subscription revenue.

If you can't make that case we don't really need to talk about it do we?

Make a conservative political forum that is subscription-only. Must pay to post. Must pay to read. Mason could make at least $20 off of that.

Anime News Network started doing this a while back. Once they announced a pay model, I went elsewhere.

Plenty of free sites to go to where I can get the same service.

Do they have free/pay tiers, or did they just switch to pay-only?
