I've seen more reputable ads on 3rd rate porn sites.

Meh, it's only standard clickbait and it's right at the bottom of the page. I don't really see the harm. I find it hard to believe that it actually generates revenue though.

Those look like the kinds of ads that will eventually distribute malware.

I assume two plus two will be held liable for any and all damages resulting from infected adware?

Hadn't thought of that, you make a good point.

Was wondering that as well about the malware.

Noodle, did you do any research into that ad network before deciding their ads are likely to have malware? Those ads don't look any worse than Tapatalk's. I have to look at a big picture of a cockroach every time I open a thread. Makes me want to vomit.

Greg, did 2p2 do any research into that ad network to see what controls they have in place to prevent malvertising from affecting their user base?

Why are you asking me? I have nothing to do with advertising here. Does your response mean you're unable to answer my question?

Do you have any reason to believe the ads contain malware other than you don't like the way they look? Almost every website has clickbait ads. What makes the ones on 2p2 potentially malicious?

In the interest of science an investigation of 8th rate porn sites may be in order, to see how their ads stack up.

I actually typed out a response last night shortly after I had them pulled, but Chrome was acting up and crashed. Went to bed as the post didn't seem especially urgent, given that they're gone now.

Killed them with fire. Network ads usually aren't in my wheelhouse, but this one was on me. I'll just say that I was hoping for something a little different when we decided to try these out - and that's all it was, a trial. Which is also why they're gone so quick.

As for those type of ads in general, I think this encapsulates my thoughts pretty well:

I'm not a fan of clickbait ads, but I don't think having some at the bottom of the page is a huge deal. However, we have standards, and those didn't meet them. Something like you see on the bottom of articles in places like CNN and similar sites are more what I had in mind.

So those ones are gone, but the idea isn't necessarily dead. Gotta pay the bills somehow, and once in a while that might mean something new that our regs aren't going to appreciate. But your feedback is appreciated, and is taken into account. Would've killed these ones without this thread, but it provided some reinforcement for how I already felt about them.

As for the malware question, I don't know how someone can tell that ads "look like the kinds of ads that will eventually distribute malware", other than assuming cheesy-looking ads and malware are correlated. And no matter what kind of research we do, as soon as we allow any ad network, even the world's most reputable one, to run ads on our site, we're giving up some control of what's run on our forums, and thus open ourselves to the possibility of malicious sites. But of course the reputation of the network matters. Certainly we try to ensure that we only deal with reputable companies, but I can't promise you that will be foolproof. The reminder to investigate our advertising partners is noted, though.

Cough

But really, I always feel like it’s bad form to introduce terrible ads and then charge people ransom to get rid of them. (No, I am not saying that’s what 2p2 is doing or even considering)

Think it’s much better to add something of value for users to enjoy while supporting the site. Help them feel a sense of community and whatnot.
