I actually typed out a response last night shortly after I had them pulled, but Chrome was acting up and crashed. Went to bed as the post didn't seem especially urgent, given that they're gone now.
Killed them with fire. Network ads usually aren't in my wheelhouse, but this one was on me. I'll just say that I was hoping for something a little different when we decided to try these out - and that's all it was, a trial. Which is also why they're gone so quick.
As for those type of ads in general, I think this encapsulates my thoughts pretty well:

I'm not a fan of clickbait ads, but I don't think having some at the bottom of the page is a huge deal. However, we have standards, and those didn't meet them. Something like you see on the bottom of articles in places like CNN and similar sites are more what I had in mind.
So those ones are gone, but the idea isn't necessarily dead. Gotta pay the bills somehow, and once in a while that might mean something new that our regs aren't going to appreciate. But your feedback is appreciated, and is taken into account. Would've killed these ones without this thread, but it provided some reinforcement for how I already felt about them.
As for the malware question, I don't know how someone can tell that ads "look like the kinds of ads that will eventually distribute malware", other than assuming cheesy-looking ads and malware are correlated. And no matter what kind of research we do, as soon as we allow any ad network, even the world's most reputable one, to run ads on our site, we're giving up some control of what's run on our forums, and thus open ourselves to the possibility of malicious sites. But of course the reputation of the network matters. Certainly we try to ensure that we only deal with reputable companies, but I can't promise you that will be foolproof. The reminder to investigate our advertising partners is noted, though.
