What is your opinion on Likes and Karma stuff on Reddit? Do you think it played a role in Reddit becoming what you've described it to be? What I mean is that people are posting something that they think will generate likes or Karma and it's not possible to have any kind of meaningful discussion when a big portion of users care about Karma more than the topic being discussed.
i worked for a major social network
there's 100% an addiction at play where people seek validation and post and comment purely to get that endorphin fix of getting that notification telling them people liked their posts
i don't think this necessarily fits here, think we're such a niche and high level discussion that if we pivoted towards karma farming then a lot of the old guard would stop showing up here because it's just become a karma farming place
look at what quora did, they used to be somewhat high level discussion and eventually gave up and went to the reddit model - a place where you could stumble upon a discussion over the trade networks of medieval spain written by a history phd has been replaced by this
but... if you have a way of tracking likes and can put an unobtrusive like notification it'll definitely incentivize people to post more for that endorphin hit
i personally think it'd be bad to follow the reddit model, it'll kill lot of what we currently have with no guarantee of real growth since why go here if it's just a much much much smaller reddit?
we can maybe include some addictive properties, but to become a reddit clone will spell death for this place imo
but i really think we need to bring back user location to the new skin, definitely adds a lot of flavor to your interactions with people, lots of fun inside jokes posted there etc etc
