Yea, true, I didn't really think about stuff like that at all.

So yea, let me ammend that to "that outing personal info isn't allowed should be really obvious to anyone, with the exception of those cases where it's really obvious to everyone that it should be"

this is wrong

a train wreck is when real life stuff becomes intertwined with forum stuff.

example: a user posts a story about having an affair, then someone finds his wife on facebook and links her the thread

As the links previously posted by someone else shows, no, this is not the general definition of train wreck on the internets. It's the first I've ever heard of it used as such and I spend way more time on the internet than I should.

Re: Question about trainwrecking

IIRC,
the most famous oot 'trainwreck' started with a certain poster chuddo describing a date with a young lady. Little did he know that details in his story would lead an investigative someone to contact the young lady about the thread. She then appeared to set the record straight.

Since then, other posters have found out to their dismay that the internet provides opportunities for similar mischief.

Re: Question about trainwrecking

One way to look at it is the term has an expanded (informal) definition which is local to 2+2.

It's part of the local slang.

Which is fine, but anything that's part of forum rules should be understandable to first time visitors and not just those familiar with the slang of that local sub-forum.

And it's not even local to 2+2 - just (it seems) some of its sub-forums.

Re: Question about trainwrecking

dids and dkgo are right.

Unless they brag about it, there's no way to know who's trainwrecked someone (and even then, people joke about trainwrecking someone all the time), so it doesn't really matter if it's allowed or not.

Do first time readers need to understand the "You can't combine the OOT definition of trainwrecking with the Politics rules to demand immediate moderator action after you **** up" sub-rule of the "You can't demand immediate moderator action after you **** up" rule?

A serious suggestion for you to consider-I think you guys should be more concerned about rehabilitation of the train wrecked. Once your train is wrecked it takes a long time to get back on track.

"Locomotive Breath"

In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath,
Runs the all-time loser,
Headlong to his death.

He feels the piston scraping --
Steam breaking on his brow --
Thank God, he stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.

He sees his children jumping off
At the stations -- one by one.
His woman and his best friend --
In bed and having fun.
He's crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees --
Old Charlie stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.

He hears the silence howling --
Catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
Has got him by the balls.
He picks up Gideon's Bible --
Open at page one --
God stole the handle and
The train won't stop going --
No way to slow down.

Re: Question about trainwrecking

It is most unwise to use slang terms in specific forum rules; the ambiguity and confusion it can cause leads to a train wreck. Like this "trainwrecking" thread for example.

I submit that 2+2 bring that old lexicographer Samuel Johnson back from the dead and have him pontificate a precise definition for us. Thus releasing 2+2 from the fog of ambiguity and pointing all the denizens of 2+2 to the proper path of eternal redemption through proper definitions. All in favor shout: Halleluiah and Amen.

Yes, and I'm very proud of it. Also, see my post #8 in this very trainwreck* of a thread for a more definitive and all inclusive answer.

If it's absurd, even painful to look at, but you just can not bring yourself to look away....

it might be a train wreck.

Re: Question about trainwrecking

Wetdog, Savoy Brown was my favorite band back in the sixties! I also liked The Climax Blues Band and the original Fleetwood Mac when they were doing blues. I still own most of the original Chess record pressings as well.

I was very into the blues back then.
