I would add that I think academic publishing is broken in a few different ways
in general, e.g. for profit journals, the way "publish or die" tenure requirements incentivize a lot of dubiously valuable work, and so on. And I'm sure I have plenty of disagreements about intellectual rigor with the editors/contributors of some of the humanities journals in question. I just don't think any of the above fits neatly into your "lefties hate science" narrative, because there are also plenty of "lefties" editing/contributing to the science journals which rejected the hoaxes.
