The problem is that Politics has different rules from the rest of the forums, and it needs those rules, because behaviors, such as trolling, which are pretty much fine in most places, are basically just ******ed in politics, because no one can really tell, since everyone thinks everyone else's beliefs are ******ed anyway. Hostility and certain debate "tactics" that are extremely dishonest, like equating someone's beliefs with racism or Nazis, can easily derail the whole forum, and it needs to be nipped in the bud.
Anyway, moderating it effectively requires the moderator to be capable of recognizing when someone on "their side" is out of control, which most people can't really do. Iron did a good job of this, but others since, not so much. So we end up in a state where there are multiple mods of different beliefs in order to balance this effect out, but what it really does is give people who deserve to get banned from all sides a champion to keep them from getting banned, and things spiral more and more out of control.
