Agreed. If we are looking to stop people from being nasty to one another, the filter doesn't do a whole lot.
But that's not what the filter is designed to do. The idea is to remove words that are, by their very nature, offensive to groups of people. As a white man, should I be offended if someone calls me the N-word? But even though I wouldn't be, I still don't want to see that word used on our forums.
Of course this is all very subjective, and filtering requires a line to be drawn somewhere. It won't be perfect, but that's not a reason to not do it. And now, the "r-word" has been designated as being on the other side of that line.
