r***** is a lot like f***** for me. I loved, loved, loved those words in general parlance, but once you realized that the word is extremely hurtful to a lot of other people moving around you, it has to go. Unless you want to be a ****** ******.

Personally I just don't understand the benefit of this type of censorship. If I tell you your mother should have aborted you when she found out you were a r*****, absolutely nothing has been done to protect you from offense. It's not any of the specific words that hurt, it's how they're said together and the malice behind them. Even if the specific word was the problem, the censor hasn't even stopped me from communicating the word. You still know what I'm saying if I call you a r*****. I fail to understand how someone is spared from offense because they can't see the specific arrangement of letters when they know exactly what they are.

I think it goes along with what else was said about treating the symptom, not the problem. Automatic censors don't stop any of the negative behaviors that no one wants in the forum. People will just express their malice in ways which aren't meaningfully different. It would be better to infract or ban the people who insist on communicating in a way the owners don't like.

It's not an either/or proposition. Censoring the word can't possibly make anything worse, so there's no reason not to do it.

Agreed. If we are looking to stop people from being nasty to one another, the filter doesn't do a whole lot.

But that's not what the filter is designed to do. The idea is to remove words that are, by their very nature, offensive to groups of people. As a white man, should I be offended if someone calls me the N-word? But even though I wouldn't be, I still don't want to see that word used on our forums.

Of course this is all very subjective, and filtering requires a line to be drawn somewhere. It won't be perfect, but that's not a reason to not do it. And now, the "r-word" has been designated as being on the other side of that line.
