They built a new high school in my hometown when I was about 12, and it used geothermal heating. And Kentucky Utilities started running this commercial on TV all the time: "We put a top of the line geothermal system into the new high school. The school loved it so much, they even made a class about it." In the commercial, a racially diverse group of students were in a chemistry lab doing generic science stuff. This didn't look much like the high school I knew.

As it happened, I knew a school board member, and I asked him about this commercial. How could the high school have a whole class about the air conditioner? "Yeah, they made that up. I don't know where they got that idea. And most of the heating is done by regular electricity, anyway." Also, they filmed the commercial in CANADA. Canada! That's, like, the opposite of geothermal. That's geo-cold-al, am I right?

I agree that it would be nice to have sexier aliens, but it's so unlikely. if something evolves completely separately from everything we're familiar with, there shouldn't logically be anything attractive about them. you'll have more in common with a stalk of celery than an alien glamour model.

I am a Democrat, yeah. However I'm going to switch my registration to the GOP in order to participate in and troll Kentucky's first ever GOP presidential caucus in March 2016. I plan to go in my gay pride shirt, spend the whole time being as annoying as possible, and in the end voting for Trump. Caucuses are ****ing horrible and should be outlawed, and I believe that 100%, even though I'm a huge Obama guy, and caucuses were integral to Obama beating Hillary in 2008. They're elitist, undemocratic, pointless, and wasteful.

I like public financing of campaigns. That's an idea that has about 0% chance of every happening, but I like it.

I'd say I'm pretty mad. It's not necessarily all about him, specifically, though. He's just the clearest distillation of a personality/argumentation type that I cannot stand: Condescending, arrogant, convinced of his own genius and manifest rightness, etc. If we didn't know he was a 65 year old man, we'd assume he came straight from a Bitcoin subreddit.

If I can be perfectly frank, the fact that he just keeps spewing a bunch of b.s. on race reminds me of a lot of people I know IRL. I do live in rural Kentucky, after all. But these people I know IRL aren't people I can just yell at in a self-righteous fury, so DS is filling that void for me nicely.

No one is asking that question of Jeb Bush. It's a completely unfair double standard. Obv you're making a joke on the internet, I get that, but it sucks that women have to deal with that question in a way that men don't. It's something I've been noticing a lot in the last few years. It's clearly been around forever, and the fact that I never really noticed it in my first 25 or so years of life doesn't say anything positive about me. I guess it's easy to be the white guy from the upper middle class family and live one's life in happy oblivity.

But I *have* noticed it more recently, and I'm honestly trying hard to correct it in myself. I am working really hard to not focus on people's physical attributes, and instead focus on their words and actions. I've had a lot of success with this, actually.

More broadly, about three years ago I started questioning a lot of the things that I had never questioned. It was largely triggered when I read an essay by Howard Zinn (who's a fairly radical historian) questioning whether WWII should have ever been fought. I had never heard anyone question that. But he made a bunch of good points. I mean, Zinn knows his stuff, and he was a WWII vet. And as I read this essay, I was volunteering and sitting in Italy in an Air Force chaplain's office at 2:00am on a Friday night waiting for my brothers and sisters and arms to call the office and ask for a designated driver. My fellow airmen weren't even in danger from fighting a war against the Nazis, or even the Taliban. They were in danger from getting drunk and putting on the traditional weekly The Ugly American reenactment, then driving their American cars off the Italian roads. It made me think.

Ever since then, I've changed a lot. I have learned a lot. I am now a pacifist. I'm much better to women than I was before. I'm much better to everyone than I was before. I think that 2015 Mayo is a much better person than 2012 Mayo was. And I'm still trying to do better. Always.
