Well, no. His southern strategy turned the GOP into the preferred party of racists that they've been for the last fifty years, so that's a black mark. Vietnam is a black mark, though Lord knows he was better than LBJ there. 25th Amendment was good, though I don't know how much of that was his doing.

But he's competing with Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Eisenhower, Reagan. He doesn't crack that tier. He's just not elite. Like Joe Flacco.

You are from Kentucky? I feel compelled to share a huge shame that actually happened to me yesterday. I was educated in the fifties, like every other good and righteous person on the earth, so of course I remember learning the capitols of the states as a young boy and proudly reciting them for all and sundry.

I cannot tell a lie, I am getting a little forgetful, but yesterday I found out that the capitol of Kentucky wasn't one the logical cities like Lexington or Louisville, it's Frankfort! Have you ever heard of a city named Frankfort? I'm sure I never have.

Is this one of those weird Southern things where everything is turned into a joke when the rest of the country isn't looking? Frankfort? What's going on?

I lived in Italy for two years and never went to Austria, or any other European country for that matter. It's the great shame of my life. In my defense, part of that is the U.S. government's fault, but most of the blame is mine.

We have 24 hours of news coverage a day. And there is not nearly that much day-to-day news to cover. "We still don't know what happened to that airplane." "Somebody else shot somebody, and we don't know why."

But elections are different. It's so easy for them to cover. There's a schedule known years in advance, so CNN can plan where and when they'll need to send people. First debate is in August. Iowa caucus is February 1st. DNC convention is whenever. RNC convention is whenever. Election Day in November. Inauguration January 20. There's no uncertainty, which there would be if they were actually focusing on real news (like natural disasters) or on pernicious things that don't make daily headlines (like child poverty).

And you have all these candidates, both realistic and not, who crave attention. So Fox News has no trouble filling up four hours of prime time every day. Instead of talking about important ****, we'll just have interviews in which Trump, or Jeb Bush, or Carly ****ing Fiorina give us their talking points. In non-primetime? **** it, somebody call George Pataki. He'll talk to us for sure, even if we are MSNBC.

And that **** gets ratings. It's like sports or a reality show. There's a cast of characters. We know these characters. We've known Hillary Clinton since 1992. That's 24 years! Then some stuff happens. The candidates react. Polls are how we keep score. Rubio's up this week! Hillary is down! Will Joe Biden run?? What about Al friggin' Gore???? Palin interviews Trump! The first GOP debate last month was the highest rated cable broadcast ever.

It's ****ing insanity. But we've done it to ourselves by paying attention.

They're good. Some sort of change has to happen at some point, obviously, since people are living so much longer than when Social Security was designed. I haven't done a ton of research and don't have a strong opinion on what needs to be done. I do know that there's a cap on FICA contributions that hits at $117,000 of income, meaning that it hits the middle class way harder than the rich. Cap needs to be eliminated, or at least raised significantly. But this would be a tax increase on the rich, so it won't happen.

I don't even watch that show, and I know it's spelled "Jon Snow." NEXT.
