Come on zikzak. Be a man and front up for a proper wager.
07-03-2017 , 10:37 PM
You don't need my permission to offer a wager. Just go ahead and do so.

And as for him suggesting that you were scared, I'd think that one's pretty obvious. An opinion can't be a lie. Or did you think he meant he was able to read your emotions, and was stating as a fact that you were scared?

Real meanings of words - just one more casualty of today's polarized discussions. Something on the news one doesn't agree with? It's "fake news"! An opinion one doesn't agree with? It's a "lie". Sigh.

OK, I'll get back with the proposal.

Hope you've got plenty of funds at hand.

Bobo, you need some lessons in reading comprehension.

I've laid out pretty clearly what was incorrect about your statements. If you're going to assert otherwise, you should be prepared to do better than condescension.

I can have my army of gimmick accounts post "Broadway is a good poster" if the money is right.
07-03-2017 , 11:12 PM
Look at that Bobo joined the leftist army of shouty downers. Or maybe Wookie was correct all along and BS just plain sucks as a poster?
07-04-2017 , 12:51 AM
Nah, Bobo's alright. He's a bit pedantic but he's a good guy. (I think)

Actually he would make a good Politics mod.
07-04-2017 , 12:55 AM
Ah, yes, very pedantic of me to call you out for incorrectly implying someone was a blatant liar and/or scumbag. But it's OK that you said I need lessons in reading comprehension, because now you've said I'm a good guy - you think.

What's next, more condescension and question avoidance?
07-04-2017 , 12:59 AM
What else would you expect at this point?

Oh, and I take back the "good guy" statement.

This thread is beginning to make me think our new mod should be a giant meteor.

Seriously, what is wrong with you? I mean, even if you were right, I have no idea why you need all the condescension. But you're not right.

Again, I said a lie is an intentionally false statement. If you have an issue with that definition, please let me know, but since you didn't mention it before, I assume you don't.

So, going back to what you highlighted, he says he knew the bet structure actually gave you decent odds. I don't think you've even proven that's incorrect, but let's assume for a moment that you're right and the odds weren't decent - that simply shows that he was incorrect. If he believe the odds were decent, but was wrong, that's not a lie. There needs to be intent for something to be intentional.

And as for the second part you highlighted (you'd be too scared), I'll go back once again to what I said before: "An opinion can't be a lie. Or did you think he meant he was able to read your emotions, and was stating as a fact that you were scared?"

OK. You actually judge whether people are good or not based on whether they agree with you?

Thanks for the advice, although it doesn't seem like it was necessary in this case. Since we're sharing advice, I'll suggest that you try and get yours right before implying people are things that they aren't.

BTW, what even inspired this post? You had already got in another condescending shot that I need to read s l o w l y, then a second post about taking back the "good guy" statement. What happened, my walk with the kids meant you had to wait too long for a reply so you had to quote yourself to take yet another shot? Seems like you're starting to take the forums waaaaay too seriously.

What do you think the words "I knew" mean or imply?

Really getting tired of going around in circles with you as it's a silly debate that you'll never concede a single point on. But I'll play along at least one more time, I guess.

It's not especially relevant, but I assume you're talking about it in the context you highlighted: "But I knew you probably wouldn't take it" - and you didn't!

But once again - a lie is an intentionally false statement. Saying "I know X" doesn't make it a lie, even if X is incorrect, so I don't know what the point of your question is.

Or, to take it to the most generous interpretation for you: "I knew... ...the bet structure actually gave you decent odds" isn't a lie if he believes it gave you decent odds.
07-04-2017 , 03:33 AM
"I knew the bet structure actually gave you decent odds" is made as if it is a factual statement. The fact is incorrect as I pointed out with my reasons. Hence it is a lie.

Words mean things.

But it's been an educational discussion for me. I always assumed when people jumped to "lie" prematurely, that they were assuming intent, but I hadn't considered that some people have bastardized the word to the point where they actually think that anything false or incorrect is a lie, and that if you say something that is incorrect, you are a liar.
